This book aims to inform readers about the recent developments in production evaluation and utilization of bioethanol fuels from non-waste feedstocks. It covers the production of bioethanol fuels from first generation starch feedstocks and sugar feedstocks grass biomass wood biomass cellulose biosyngas and third generation algae. In this context there are nine key sections where the first four chapters cover the production of bioethanol fuels from feedstocks at large and non-waste feedstocks. This book shows that pretreatments and hydrolysis of the non-waste feedstocks fermentation of hydrolysates and separation and distillation of bioethanol fuels are the fundamental processes for bioethanol fuel production from these non-waste feedstocks with the exception of the biosyngas feedstocks. What is Thinking? And Other Philosophical Reflections

Responsibility Collapses Why Moral Responsibility is Impossible

Responsibility Collapses Why Moral Responsibility is Impossible

Our worldview assumes that people are morally responsible. Our emotions beliefs and values assume that a person is responsible for what she thinks and does and that this is a good thing. This book argues that this worldview is false. It provides four arguments for this conclusion that build on the free will and responsibility literatures in original and insightful ways: Foundation: No one is responsible because there is no foundation for responsibility. A foundation for responsibility is something for which a person is responsible but not by being responsible for something else Epistemic Condition: No one is responsible because no one fulfills the epistemic condition necessary for blameworthiness Internalism: If a person were responsible then she would be responsible for and only for what goes on in her head. Most of the evidence for responsibility says the opposite Amount: No one is responsible because we cannot make sense of what makes a person more or less praiseworthy (or blameworthy) There is no other book that argues against moral responsibility based on foundationalism the epistemic condition and internalism and shows that these arguments cohere. The book’s arguments for internalism and quantifying responsibility are new to the literature. Ultimately the book’s conclusions undermine our commonsense view of the world and the most common philosophical understanding of God morality and relationships. Responsibility Collapses: Why Moral Responsibility Is Impossible is essential reading for scholars and advanced students in philosophy religious studies and political science who are interested in debates about agency free will and moral responsibility. | Responsibility Collapses Why Moral Responsibility is Impossible

Neuromuscular Fundamentals How Our Musculature is Controlled

Neuromuscular Fundamentals How Our Musculature is Controlled

This book is rather unique in its approach and coverage. The approach is essentially that of an engineering textbook emphasizing the quantitative aspects and highlighting the fundamentals and basic concepts involved. The coverage progresses in a logical and systematic manner from the subcellular starting with the electrophysiology of the cell membrane then proceeding to synapses neurons and muscle before considering neuronal motor ensembles and the neuromuscular system as a whole. Simple clear and comprehensive explanations are given throughout. After an introductory chapter on some background material in biology biophysics and chemical kinetics a substantial part of the book (Chapters 2-8) necessarily covers in considerable detail the basic components and processes that underlie the electrical and associated activities of the nervous system. The remaining chapters of the book (Chapters 9-13) focus on the neuromuscular system starting with the structure of muscle cells the generation of force by muscular contraction and muscle receptors. The last chapter examines aspects of the control of movement motor learning and memory the maintenance of posture and locomotion and critically examines some of the theories that have been advanced to explain how movement is controlled. The book is intended for undergraduate or graduate students in the natural sciences mathematics or engineering who seek a deeper understanding of the fundamentals of neuroscience and the somatomotor system in accordance with the aforementioned objectives. The book can serve as a textbook for a one-semester course on the neuromuscular system or as a reference in a more general course on neuroscience. Provides a thorough analytical treatment of membrane electrophysiology starting from the first principles Emphasizes strongly the basic and fundamental concepts throughout Discusses thoroughly the essential features and properties of the basic constituents of the nervous system that is neurons and synapses including the neuromuscular junction Explains the main aspects of posture locomotion and control of movement Includes practice problems throughout the text and a solutions manual will be available for adopting professors Nassir Sabah is professor of biomedical engineering in the electrical and computer engineering department at the American University of Beirut Lebanon. He received his B. Sc. (Hons. Class I) and his M. Sc. in electrical engineering from the University of Birmingham U. K. and his Ph. D. in biophysical sciences from the State University of New York (SUNY/Buffalo). He has served as Chairman of the Electrical Engineering Department Director of the Institute of Computer Studies and Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture at the American University of Beirut. In these capacities he was responsible for the development of programs curricula and courses in electrical biomedical communications and computer engineering. Professor Sabah has extensive professional experience in the fields of electrical engineering electronics and computer systems with more than 35 years’ teaching experience in neuroengineering biomedical engineering electronics and electric circuits. He has over 100 technical publications mainly in neurophysiology biophysics and biomedical instrumentation. He has served on numerous committees and panels in Lebanon and the region. He is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET U. Sexual History Evidence in Rape Trials Is the Jury Out?

Sexual History Evidence in Rape Trials Is the Jury Out?

This book provides an in-depth examination of current high-profile debates about the use of sexual history evidence in rape trials and its impact on jurors. In doing so it presents findings of the first mock jury dataset in England and Wales to explore how jurors interpret discuss and rely upon such evidence within their deliberations. Drawing on both qualitative and quantitative insights from the 18 mock jury panels the book highlights the complex nuanced and intersectional impact of sexual history evidence within the deliberative ideal. Indeed findings exemplified routine and ongoing prejudicial framings of sexual history amongst jurors and frequent endorsement of rape myths that served to mistakenly infer relevance and undermine the perceived credibility of the complainant. The findings discussed within this book are therefore key to addressing the current knowledge gap around the impact of sexual history evidence and are embedded within broader discussions about evidential legitimacy in rape trials. The book draws on good practice observed in other jurisdictions to makes numerous recommendations for change. Aiming to inform academic policy and legislative discussions in this area Sexual History Evidence in Rape Trials will be of great interest to students and scholars of Criminal Law and Criminology as well as policy makers and legal practitioners.
