Straight Skin Gay Masks and Pretending to be Gay on Screen

Straight Skin Gay Masks and Pretending to be Gay on Screen

Straight Skin Gay Masks and Pretending to Be Gay on Screen examines cinematic depictions of pretending-to-be-gay assessing performances that not only reflect heteronormative and explicitly homophobic attitudes but also offer depictions of gay selfhood with more nuanced multidirectional identifications. The case of straight protagonists pretending to be gay on screen is the ideal context in which to study unanticipated progressivity and dissidence in regard to cultural construction of human sexualities in the face of theatricalized epistemological collapse. Teasing apart the dynamics of depictions of both sexual stability and fluidity in cinematic images of men pretending to be gay offers new insights into such salient issues as sexual vulnerability and dynamics and long-term queer visibility in a politically complicated mass culture which is mostly produced in a heteronormative and even hostile cultural environment. Additionally this book initially examines queer uses of sexuality masquerade in Alternate Gay World Cinema that allegorically features a world pretending to be gay in which straights are harassed and persecuted in order to expose the tragic consequences of sexual intolerance. Films and TV series examined as part of the analysis include The Gay Deceivers Victor/Victoria Happy Texas William Friedkin’s Cruising and many other straight and gay screens. This is a fascinating and important study relevant to students and researchers in Film Studies Media Studies Gender Studies Queer Studies Sexuality Studies Communication Studies and Cultural Studies. | Straight Skin Gay Masks and Pretending to be Gay on Screen

The Waterside Ape An Alternative Account of Human Evolution

The Waterside Ape An Alternative Account of Human Evolution

Why are humans so fond of water? Why is our skin colour so variable? Why aren’t we hairy like our close ape relatives? A savannah scenario of human evolution has been widely accepted primarily due to fossil evidence; and fossils do not offer insight into these questions. Other alternative evolutionary scenarios might but these models have been rejected. This book explores a controversial idea – that human evolution was intimately associated with watery habitats as much or more than typical savannahs. Written from a medical point of view the author presents evidence supporting a credible alternative explanation for how humans diverged from our primate ancestors. Anatomical and physiological evidence offer insight into hairlessness different coloured skin subcutaneous fat large brains a marine-type kidney a unique heat regulation system and speech. This evidence suggests that humans may well have evolved not just as savannah mammals as is generally believed but with more affinity for aquatic habitats – rivers streams lakes and coasts. Key Features: Presents the evidence for a close association between riparian habitats and the origin of humans Reviews the savannah ape hypothesis for human origins Describes various anatomical adaptations that are associated with hypotheses of human evolution Explores characteristics from the head and neck such as skull and sinus structures the larynx and ear structures and functions | The Waterside Ape An Alternative Account of Human Evolution

Touch Sexuality and Hands in British Literature 1740–1901

Touch Sexuality and Hands in British Literature 1740–1901

From Robert Lovelace’s uninvited hand-grasps in Samuel Richardson’s Clarissa to to Basil Hallward’s first encounter with Dorian Gray literary depictions of touching hands in British literature from the 1740s to the 1890s communicate emotional dimensions of sexual experience that reflect shifting cultural norms associated with gender roles sexuality and sexual expression. But what is the relationship between hands tactility and sexuality in Victorian literature? And how do we best interpret what those touches communicate between characters? This volume addresses these questions by asserting a connection between the prevalence of violent sexually charged touches in eighteenth-century novels such as those by Eliza Haywood Samuel Richardson and Frances Burney and growing public concern over handshake etiquette in the nineteenth century evident in works by Jane Austen the Brontës George Eliot Elizabeth Gaskell Thomas Hardy Oscar Wilde and Flora Annie Steel. This book takes an interdisciplinary approach that combines literary analysis with close analyses of paintings musical compositions and nonfictional texts such as etiquette books and scientific treatises to make a case for the significance of tactility to eighteenth- and nineteenth-century perceptions of selfhood and sexuality. In doing so it draws attention to the communicative nature of skin-to-skin contact as represented in literature and traces a trajectory of meaning from the forceful grips that violate female characters in eighteenth-century novels to the consensual embraces common in Victorian and neo-Victorian literature. | Touch Sexuality and Hands in British Literature 1740–1901

The Somatechnics of Whiteness and Race Colonialism and Mestiza Privilege

The Somatechnics of Whiteness and Race Colonialism and Mestiza Privilege

Investigating the emergence of a specific mestiza/mestizo whiteness that facilitates relations between the Philippines and Western nations this book examines the ways in which the construction of a particular form of Philippine whiteness serves to deploy positions of exclusion privilege and solidarity. Through Filipino Filipino-Australian and Filipino-American experiences the author explores the operation of whiteness showing how a mixed-race identity becomes the means through which racialised privileges authority and power are embodied in the Philippine context and examines the ways in which colonial and imperial technologies of the past frame contemporary practices such as skin-bleaching the use of different languages discourses of bilateral relations secularism development and the movement of Filipino Australian and American bodies between and within nations. Drawing on key ideas expressed in critical race and whiteness studies together with the theoretical concepts of somatechnics biopolitics and governmentality The Somatechnics of Whiteness and Race sheds light on the impact of colonial and imperial histories on contemporary international relations and calls for a 'queering' or resignification of whiteness which acknowledges permutations of whiteness fostered within national boundaries as well as through various nation-state alliances and fractures. As such it will appeal to scholars of cultural studies sociology and politics with interests in whiteness postcolonialism and race. | The Somatechnics of Whiteness and Race Colonialism and Mestiza Privilege

The Boundaries of Mixedness A Global Perspective

The Boundaries of Mixedness A Global Perspective

The Boundaries of Mixedness tackles the burgeoning field of critical mixed race studies bringing together research that spans five continents and more than ten countries. Research on mixedness is growing yet there is still much debate over what exactly mixed race means and whether it is a useful term. Despite a growing focus on and celebration of mixedness globally particularly in the media societies around the world are grappling with how and why crossing socially constructed boundaries of race ethnicity and other markers of difference matter when considering those who date marry raise families or navigate their identities across these boundaries. What we find collectively through the ten studies in this book is that in every context there is a hierarchy of mixedness both in terms of intimacy and identity. This hierarchy of intimacy renders certain groups as more or less marriable socially constructed around race ethnicity caste religion skin color and/or region. Relatedly there is also a hierarchy of identities where certain races languages ethnicities and religions are privileged and valued differently. These differences emerge out of particular local histories and contemporary contexts yet there are also global realities that transcend place and space. The Boundaries of Mixedness is a significant new contribution to mixed race studies for academics researchers and advanced students of Ethnic and Racial Studies Sociology History and Public Policy. Our Bodies Not Ourselves WOMEN AGING FROM MENOPAUSE TO ONE HUNDRED

Our Bodies Not Ourselves WOMEN AGING FROM MENOPAUSE TO ONE HUNDRED

In 1970 the best-seller Our Bodies Ourselves was published. The focus of the authors the Boston Health Collective was on the youthful female body: on reproduction sexuality genitalia intimacy and relationships in the context of North American cultural expectations. Our Bodies Not Ourselves is also about the female body—but on women aging from menopause to 100. Like its predecessor Our Bodies Not Ourselves covers sexuality genitalia intimacy gender norms and relationships. But the aging woman's body has many other issues from head to toe from skeleton to skin and from sleep to motion. The book an ethnography and Western cultural history of aging and gender draws upon history culture and social media the authors’ own experiences as women of 70 and conversations and correspondence with more than two hundred women aged from 60-ish to 100. Part I The Private Body focuses on the embodied experiences of aging within our private households. Part II The Public Body explores weight height and adornment as old women appear among others. Recomposing the Past: Representations of Early Music on Stage and Screen

Recomposing the Past: Representations of Early Music on Stage and Screen

Recomposing the Past is a book concerned with the complex but important ways in which we engage with the past in modern times. Contributors examine how media on stage and screen uses music and in particular early music to evoke and recompose a distant past. Culture popular and otherwise is awash with a stylise - sometimes contradictory - musical history. And yet for all its complexities these representations of the past through music are integral to how our contemporary and collective imaginations understand history. More importantly they offer a valuable insight into how we understand our musical present. Such representative strategies the book argues cross generic boundaries and as such it brings together a range of multimedia discussion on the subjects of film (Lord of the Rings Dangerous Liasions) television (Game of Thrones The Borgias) videogame (Dragon Warrior Gauntlet) and opera (Written on Skin Taverner English ‘dramatick opera’). This collection constitutes a significant and interdisciplinary contribution to a growing literature which is unpacking our ongoing creative dialogue with the past. Divided into three complementary sections grouped not by genre or media but by theme it considers: ‘Authenticity Appropriateness and Recomposing the Past’ ‘Music Space and Place: Geography as History’ and ‘Presentness and the Past: Dialogues between Old and New’. Like the musical collage that is our shared multimedia historical soundscape it is hoped that this collection is in its eclecticism more than the sum of its parts. | Recomposing the Past: Representations of Early Music on Stage and Screen

Lost to Desire The École Psychosomatique de Paris and its Encounter With Patients Who Do Not Thrive

Lost to Desire The École Psychosomatique de Paris and its Encounter With Patients Who Do Not Thrive

This book covers the work of psychoanalysts in post WWII France with patients beset by somatic problems with little manifest fantasy life and how their concept of opératoire continues to inform the theory and practice of working with patients in crisis. The author explores what the new concept has elicited in a community of practitioners – close to the École Psychosomatique de Paris – over a period of some sixty years. As a 'skin for thought' it facilitated change while preserving coherence gradually beginning to attract further considerations. Important themes have included: the early groundwork necessary for the configuration of fantasy the importance of a shared imaginary the role of denial and obliterated memories as a bond between people emergency measures of a Me cut off from revitalisation the effects of the rhythms and atmosphere at the workplace on family life and the consequences of a crisis suppressed for lack of a holding frame. As psychoanalytic discourse adapted to the challenges the original perspective changed aspect moving from a systematic evaluation of what the patients did not produce to what the analyst had to fill in to make sense of the situation. Clashing with the terrain French psychoanalysts raised important problems about psychic anaemia that are stimulating and deserve cross-cultural discussion. This book will appeal to psychoanalysts in practice and training who wish to learn more about this ground-breaking work on memory and trauma and how to apply it to their own practice. | Lost to Desire The École Psychosomatique de Paris and its Encounter With Patients Who Do Not Thrive
