A deciduous, broadleaf tree native to the UK, hornbeam is very similar to Beech both in looks and habit, even retaining many of its leaves through winter (although it does lose a few more than Beech). Hornbeam has bright green new leaves in spring with deep veins and a serrated edge, which differentiates it from Beech, and these give way to coppery leaves in winter, which are retained by the tree through the colder months.Often confused with beach which has as less serrated leaf and also fruits which lack wings, hornbeam is more tolerant of poor soils and exposed sites than beech, and if your ground lays a little wet in winter for example clay soils, then hornbeam will tolerate this better.These features mean that Hornbeam is perfect for creating high hedges to screen out noise and wind, growing around 20-40cm per year and quickly creating a high privacy screen.As well as creating a border to your garden, hedges are also great for the environment and wildlife, and hornbeam is no different as it provides shelter and food supplies for many animals, especially as it retains its leaves over winter.Supplied as an 80-100 cm plant (inc 3L pot), ready for planting out - potted plants can be planted at any time as long as the ground is not frozen or waterlogged.NB Plants are dormant between October and April and are sent out without leaves.

Quick to grow from seed, the vigorous plants produce good-sized cobs of up to 20cm long, with golden-yellow kernels that have a mouth-wateringly rich flavour.A worthy recipient of the RHS Award of Garden Merit, 'Swift F1' is easy to grow and a reliably good cropper - a great choice for beginner and experienced gardeners alike. It is also one of the best crops for getting children interested in gardening as the seeds germinate soon after sowing, grow to an impressive size and produce delicious corn cobs that they will relish.Cobs can be cooked whole - simply remove the husks and boil the cobs for a few minutes, roast in the oven or wrap them in foil for the barbeque. They can also be eaten raw; just strip off the kernels with a sharp knife and add them to salads for an extra sweet crunch. Sweetcorn is rich in fibre and a good source of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. The cobs are best eaten soon after picking but will keep for a few days in the fridge and they freeze well.Sweetcorn thrives in a sunny position. Considered the 'King of Cooking Apples' by respected chefs and professional fruit growers, 'Bramley' was raised from a single seed planted by Mary Ann Brailsford in 1809. Since then it has gone on to become the world's best-known and favourite cooking apple, standing the test of time over 200 years! It is considered supreme because its fruits have the perfect acidic flavour required for use in the kitchen and the almost pure-white flesh becomes incredibly light and fluffy when cooked. 'Bramley' is an incredibly heavy cropper once established, with high-quality fruits that will store through the winter months. Pick them in early October (before they get over-ripe) and store cold but frost-free for use until January. Our grower-quality, multi-branched, bare-root trees have been grafted onto a dwarfing rootstock to provide a compact and manageable habit, which in this case will reach about 2m (6-7 ft) tall. It is best to grow 'Bramley' alongside another apple variety such as 'Braeburn' for best fruit set, as 'Bramley' is not self-fertile. 'The Bramley Apple bought earlier this year had masses of bloom which made an attractive feature in the botttom of the garden and after a little fruit drop my father and I had 3 decent size Bramley apples which had a very good flavour. They went down very well with a home-made pie (1 apple) and baked apple, and I would certainly recommend the following recipe: Take a generous handful of sultanas and soak overnight in whisky with a dash of cloves added. Take the apples and core them, also make a cut just through the skin around the circumference to prevent the apples splitting, and place on an ovenproof dish.Stuff the core cavity with the sultanas and then add sugar to the remaining spirit to make a thick syrup (consistency of honey) and drizzle over the top of the apples. Then bake at 180 degrees for about 35-40 mins and then serve up with cream or ice cream to enjoy the fruits of the garden!Robert, Middlesex - October 2014

Being a dwarf type bean, it is ideal for growing in containers, as well as in beds and borders, producing compact, bushy plants that don't need staking.The succulent beans have a rich green colour and an excellent flavour and are a great source of fibre and vitamins A and C. If not left too long on the vine, the beans are stringless, so for best flavour and texture, pick them when they reach 15cm (6in) in length. They are best harvested in one picking, as soon as they are ready; if you have more than you can eat, they will keep well and are also good for freezing.For early harvests, sow from April, indoors or outdoors under cloches, or outdoors from May to July directly into their cropping position. The plants are fast-growing, and produce attractive white flowers followed by the pods. The pods will be ready for picking 12 weeks after sowing, with plentiful crops over a short period (about 2 weeks). Regular sowings every couple of weeks or so will extend the cropping season through to autumn. For best results, grow in a sunny, sheltered position. These beans will thrive in fertile, moist but well-draining soil, so dig in some well-rotted manure before sowing in a bed or use good-quality compost in a container.Supplied as a pack of 100 (approx.) seeds ready to sow indoors into individual pots or outdoors into their cropping position. Grows up to 60cm (24in). Successional sowing will produce harvests from June to October.
