The Next Big Thing is an old-style adventure game, reminiscent of the greatest hits made in the point'n'click formula. Pendulo Studios is responsible for its production, which became famous for three installments of the extremely popular Runaway series.
The latest title is a free continuation of ideas previously used by Pendulo in Hollywood Monsters - a Spanish-language adventure game, originally released in 1997. The action takes place in the Hollywood world of the 1940s, spiced with fantastic elements. In the reality of The Next Big Thing, the role of celebrities, producers and movie stars is played by monsters.
In the game, we play the role of two charismatic heroes - journalist Dan Murray and his colleague Liz Allaire - involved in an original story full of unusual twists. Both characters are very different in character and therefore they honestly hate each other. The blonde Liz is intelligent, ambitious, professional and energetic, but at the same time a bit crazy and obsessively truthful, which often puts her in quite a lot of trouble. Dan is the braziest, cunning, lying, and unbearably seductive sports reporter in all of California.
The story begins when the two main characters are commissioned to report on one of the big Hollywood parties. They accidentally witness a break-in into the film office of the giant William Fitzrandolph. Liz without hesitation decides to take matters into her own hands, starting an investigation. Unfortunately, her partner, as well as a whole bunch of various, more or less human residents of a luxury mansion, is not so eager to cooperate, especially since the whole thing seems to have a deeper intrigue.
The game is full of humor, riddles and puzzles, as well as references to mass culture, including famous movies and TV series. As in the previous productions of the Pendulo studio, we meet a lot of bizarre characters during the game. One of them is prof. A fly that, after an accident during the tests of its invention, turned into a half human, half fly.
The Next Big Thing is a 100% adventure game. The fun consists mainly in searching the locations thoroughly, having conversations, collecting items and, of course, solving puzzles. We start by choosing one of the three difficulty levels. The first one has built-in hints and the ability to highlight elements of the location in which we can do something. The middle level has the tips turned off, and the highest level lacks any of these facilities.
The story was served in a graphic style characteristic of Pendulo Studios, maintained in a humorous, cartoon style with strongly saturated colors. The game uses the same technical solutions as in Runaway: A Twist of Fate, although the characters and backgrounds were developed in Full HD for the first time. It is also worth adding that the creators went with the times and offered support for many different resolutions. Owners of modern monitors do not have to worry that the view will be spoiled by the black stripes on the sides of the screen.
