Ardbeg An OA Single Malt Scotch Whisky 70cl

Ardbeg An OA Single Malt Scotch Whisky 70cl

Ardbeg An OA Single Malt Scotch Whisky The Ardbeg distillery is located on the south side of the Isle of Islay, in the small settlement of Ardbeg from which it takes its name. It has been producing whisky since 1798, but only began commercial production in 1815. Having changed ownership over the years, it is now owned by the LVMH (Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy) group. It is renowned for producing a heavily peated Islay Whisky. The distillery themselves state "Ardbeg Ten Years Old is revered around the world as the peatiest, smokiest, most complex single malt of them all". They use malted barley which is sourced from the maltings in Port Ellen (also on the Island of Islay). Interesting Fact: The brand name Ardbeg is an anglicisation of 'An Àird Bheag' which is Scottic Gaelic, and means 'The Small Promontory'. The inspiration for Ardbeg An OA comes from the Mull of Oa. Gepgraphically, the Distillery is sheltered from the harshest excesses of the mighty Atlantic by the Mull of Oa. This is a rounded peninsula in the south of Islay.  It got its name from the use of the distillery's newly-established Gathering Vat. Within this vat, Ardbeg gather whiskies from several different cask types. These include sweet Pedro Ximenez; spicy Virgin charred oak; and intense ex-bourbon casks (as well as others). Within the vat these blend perfectly, resulting in a whisky with smoky power, mellowed by a delectable, smooth sweetness. The result is a whisky with a light gold colour. On the nose this is sweet and creamy, with butterscotch, tobacco, fennel and boiled sweets all coming through. Citrus is present, but more subtle.  The hallmark Ardbeg peat is definitely here, in the flavour - but slightly more mellow (still definitely a peaty whisky though). Dark chocolate and aniseed are wrapped in smooth, silky butterscotch, black pepper and clove, before rising to an intense crescendo of flavour The finish is lingering and seductive. Whilst it has an intensity, somehow this remains gentle, with flavours of aniseed, hickory and distant subtle smoke. More from Ardbeg Perfect Serve We liked this with a simple drop of water to it, served at room temperature, However, as with all whisky, enjoy it how you like!

Tënu Gin - Le Bon Tikka Barrel Aged Gin 50cl

Tënu Gin - Le Bon Tikka Barrel Aged Gin 50cl

Tënu Gin - Le Bon Tikka Barrel Aged Gin Founded in 2014, Tenu Spirits was created by Chef Antto Melasniemi and Artist Klaus Haapaniemi. They had a shared desire to explore, be excited and ensure quality drinks - and so they decided to create their own drinks brand. The original Tënu Gin was created for a pop-up restaurant in London. After proving hugely succesful, they decided to launch it into the wider market. Like a lot of great things, the birth of Le Bon Tikka gin started by accident. During the creation of a test batches of Tënu Gin, Bilberries were substituted for the usual lingonberries. Initially this was too heavy and not found to be acceptable on the palate. However, it did bear some promise - so it was decided to allow it to age in new oak barrels for a period of 6 months. They tried a number of different barrels, and the results varied. Some too vanilla, some far too woody. However, upon blended they found a perfect mix - and Le Bon Tikka was born! Only 1800 bottles of this have been created - so a definite limited edition! Fun fact: Tikka means woodpecker in Finnish - hence the name! It can also be found on the label along with the bilberries. Whilst they keep the full list of botanicals a secret, it is know to include juniper berries, bilberries (only wild, handpicked Finnish ones), wild rose petals (sourced from the Finnish archipelago), orris root, coriander seeds and lemon peel. With a stronger abv this is a gin which is truly packed full of flavour. There is a lot of woody juniper in this, which is joined by oaky spice and hints of sweet stem ginger. A sweet caramel also comes through which evolves in the mouth to floral lavender, warm vanilla and interestingly a clean citrus finish. More from Tënu Spirits Perfect Serve According to the creators, Le Bon Tikka can be enjoyed neat or with ice. However, if you're not so keen on such strong spirits enjoyed neat it also makes an absolutely delicious gin & tonic. Try this with Thomas Henry Tonic Water. Take a large glass filled with ice and add 50ml of the gin. Gently pour over 150ml of the tonic and stir gently. Garnish with a slice of lemon.

Zacapa Edición Negra Rum 70cl

Zacapa Edición Negra Rum: Smoky and Intense Introduction Zacapa rum is named after the city of Zacapa in Guatemala, and was created to commemorate the 100th anniversary celebration of its foundation. Coming from the Aztec Nahuatl language, the name Zacapa means “on the river of grass. Proudly made in Guatemala, Zacapa Edición Negra Rum is a blend of rums aged between 6-23 years. They age the rum using casks that previously held robust American whiskies and fine wines, giving this delicious rum a complex and balanced sip. The Process Zacapa Rum is made using the first press of virgin sugar cane, instead of molasses (which is more common). By using sugar cane, it makes the rum sweeter and smoother. The Rum Journey Master Blender, Lorena Vásquez carefully selects a range of cask types and styles for each rum to capture specific flavours and textures, and that will give the perfect colour. Zacapa Edición Negra Rum is aged using double charred American Oak casks. This creates a rich, dark rum with a smoky intensity. Aged Above The Clouds Zacapa Rum is aged 2,300 metres above sea level, allowing the rum to develop a deeper aroma and rich layeres of flavour. Their master blender, Lorena Vásquez explains that “Zacapa is aged at high altitude where the temperature is lower. The lower temperature also directly influences the oxygen levels which are lower as well, and this lower oxygen level aids in a slower aging process. The slower aging, allows for more time for the aromas and flavours to combine.” Tasting Notes Aroma: On the nose you there are caramelized fruits, plums and raisins with smooth smoky notes Taste: On the palate, there is a delicious woodiness, with spicy and smoky notes, combined with the balance of chocolate and dried fruit. Hennessy VS Cognac Magnum 1.5L

Hennessy VS Cognac Magnum 1.5L

Hennessy VS Cognac The history behind Hennessy goes back to 1765. It was an Irish Jacobite officer who had served in the army of Louis XV that started the Hennesy Cognac Distillery. He had retired in the cognac region where he setup the distillery and began exporting his products to the UK and Ireland. Now known as one of the 'big four' cognac producers in the world (who between then produce around 85% of the world's cognac). Hennessy is the largest of the four, and produce around 70 million bottles of cognac a year. In fact, it was in 1840 that Hennessy became the worlds leading exporter of Brandy, and to this day have not lost that title. Being a type of Brandy, Cognac falls under the French appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC) which means there are strict requirements to be called Cognac. These include twice distilling specific grape varieties in copper pot stills and aging for a minimum of two years in Limousin or Tronçais oak casks. The VS (very special) designation denotes that the youngest brandy within the blend has had the minimum two years in casks (it is always the youngest brandy in the blend which gives the designation).  Hennessy VS Cognac is a blend masterfully created from over 40 different eaux-de-vie. It is the Master Blender who oversees this process to ensure the quality.  The result of this blending and knowledge is a full bodied cognac. With a renowned smoothness, and a touch of sweetness it has distinct spice notes. The aging in wood gives a light nuttiness to the cognac, which join with flavours of rich dried fruits and berries. These are all rounded out by warming vanilla. Interesting fact: In 1813 Jean Fillioux was appointed Master Blender. A member of the Fillious family has kept this role ever since - more than 250 years and a total of eight generations! More from Hennessy Perfect Serve If enjoying straight up on its own, ensure you enjoy this at room temperature from a tulip glass. However this also works exceptionally well in the mix. Try mixing with ginger ale for a longer refreshing drink, which brings out the natural spice found in Hennessy V.S. Take a tall glass filled with ice and add 40ml of the V.S. Gently pour over 100ml of ginger ale (we like this with Fentimans), and stir gently. Garnish with a slice of lime.

Hibiki Suntory Whisky - Japanese Harmony 70cl

Hibiki Suntory Whisky - Japanese Harmony 70cl

Hibiki Suntory Whisky - Japanese Harmony The belief that their spirits embody the harmonious balance between nature and the Japanese people is central to the Suntory brand. They believe this embodiment makes their distillation processes an art form. The Hibiki range (which means 'resonance' in Japanese) was launched in 1989 to commemorate the company's 90th anniverdary. Since then it has been embraced as the paragon of The Art of Japanese Whisky - the culmination of the harmony between Japanese nature and her people.  Hibiki Japanese Harmony is a harmonious blend of several malt whiskies from the Yamazaki and Hakushu distilleries, and grain whisky from the Chita distillery. The whiskies are drawn from 5 different types of cask, including American white oak casks, Sherry casks and Mizunara oak casks. The blending process creates a full orchestra of both flavours and aromas to enjoy, and truly shows why this is a renowned premium Japanese whisky. The whisky itself has an enticing amber colour to it, which gives aromas of rose, lychees, just a hint of rosemary, just the right amount of mature woodiness and warm sandalwood. On the palate there is a honey like sweetness joined by both candied orange peel and white chocolate. It develops on the palate leading to a subtle but long finish, with hints of japanese oak (Mizunara). More from Suntory Perfect Serve As with all whiskies, drink them as you personally enjoy. We liked this served with a single large ice cube, so as to chill - but not overly dilute.

Zacapa Sistema Solera 23 Rum 70cl

Zacapa Sistema Solera 23 Rum 70cl

AGED ABOVE THE CLOUDS: ZACAPA SISTEMA SOLERA 23 RUM Introduction Zacapa rum is named after the city of Zacapa in Guatemala, and was created to commemorate the 100th anniversary celebration of its foundation. Coming from the Aztec Nahuatl language, the name Zacapa means “on the river of grass. Proudly made in Guatemala, Zacapa 23 Rum is a blend of rums aged between 6-23 years. The yeast used during the fermentation process is derived from pineapples, which brings out incredible aromas and flavours, and through the distillation process the aroma and flavour charater and profiles are defind for each of the Zacapa Rums. The Rum Journey Master Blender, Lorena Vásquez carefully selects a range of cask types and styles for each rum to capture specific flavours and textures, and that will give the perfect colour. Each rum uses a selection of base casks and a unique cask. Zacapa No. 23 base casks are American oak and charred American oak barrels that previously aged American whiskey and casks that previously aged Oloroso Sherry. The unique cask for this rum previously aged Pedro Ximénez wines. The slower aging, allows for more time for the aromas and flavours to combine.” Tasting Notes Aroma: Sweet aroma of vanilla, cacao and butterscotch with notes of caramelized roasted brazil nuts and toasted hazelnut. It has fruity notes of banana and dried pineapple and a touch of toffee. Taste: Complex, generous and full bodied, the taste starts with a depth of dried fruit and apricot, building to savoury oak, nutmeg, leather and tobacco with notes of coffee and vanilla, balanced with a spicy touch of cinnamon and ginger. Finish: It has an intricate finish with honeyed butterscotch, spiced oak, dried fruit and a hint of smoke. More from Zacapa Perfect Serve Zacapa No. 23 Rum is best served neat, or on the rocks but is also the star in a rum cocktail, like a Daiquiri. Zacapa No.23 is a blend of rums that have been aged between 6-23 years. What is the Sistema Solera Aging method? Solera is a way to age rum to keep consistancy batch after batch, and is adopted from the Spanish way to age sherry. The process involes having multiple barrels to capture specific flavours and texture. When the oldest barrel of rum is finished, it is replenished with the next oldest, and so on. The newest empty barrel is replenished with a new batch of rum. Can this rum be enjoyed neat? Yes, it can be enjoyed neat, with or without ice. Is Zacapa No. 23 suitable for classic rum cocktails? Its vibrant copper colour releases aromas of  banana and caramelised pear, a hint of ivanilla, as well as coconut and spices. It has a full flavour, which brings notes of ginger and candied fruits for which Martell is know. This follows with distinctive hints of toasted oak from the bourbon casks.
