Wildjac Fresh Citrus Vodka Based in the Wyre Forest, to the South West of Birmingham in the UK, Wildjac strive to produce a range of sustainable and eco-friendly premium botanical spirits. To this end, they hand-craft their drinks using only 100% natural ingredients which (where possible) they source locally. With their Fresh Citrus Vodka, Wildjac have created a fresh and zesty vodka which is distilled (unusually) with Worcestershire (a county in the centre of the UK), Endeavour hops and Lemon Thyme. The other ingredients rounding out the botanical compliment are elderflower, orange peel, viola, lemon zest, pink grapefruit, coriander, lime, eucalyptus and bergamot. This gin is ruled by the full moon, it's macerated in fresh Sicilian lemon peel for seven days before its released into the wild. Handcrafted in their distillery in Aberdeen (North Scotland, UK - and a part of the Brewdog family), the botanicals in this gin tell the own story. Scotch Pine (which compliments and bolsters the juniper), Tuscan juniper, grapefruit peel, lemon peel, pink peppercorn, orris root, angelica, mace, cardamom, lemongrass, kaffir lime, almonds, coriander, and Lavender. Poetic License Old Tom Gin Reminiscent of the types of gin that were enjoyed in the 1800's, Old Tom Gin's are sweeter - and have been making a come back recently. With theirs, the Poetic License Distillery in Sunderland (North UK) have made a gin which is sweeter than their Dry Gin, but with a touch of pepper. The botanicals they use enhance the sweeter taste, and the oak casks they use continue to add additional flavour and colour. The inclusion of hibiscus and rose petals infuses their distinct character within the gin, also adding a delightful rose gold tinge. On the nose this gin is quite aromatic, with distinct floral aromas. However, with its juniper back note there is no forgetting this is a gin! Abasolo Whisky From the birthplace of corn comes a Mexican Whisky which is aiming to reinvent the corn whisky category. Abasolo is the first distillery in Mexico which is truly dedicated to whisky production. Abasolo El Whisky De Mexico (The Whisky from Mexico) is distilled using 100% Mexican Cacahuazintle (kaka-wha-SINT-lay) corn. This corn has been cultivated and passed down for more than 200 generations of local farmers. It has a distinct, extraordinary flavour, which it imparts to the whisky. Through the use of nixtamalisation (a 4,000 year old cooking technique), Abasolo unlock the deep flavours found within the corn. This process has never been used in whisky production, but is common-place in preparing corn as a food in Mexico. This whisky has deep, nuanced notes of roasted corn, honey, vanilla, black tea, and leather. This unique flavour profile is only unlocked due to the nixtamalisation process. It ensures the Mexican ancestral corn provenance is honoured, and is unlike any other whisky profile. Wessex Wyvern's Spiced Gin Wessex was an anglo-saxon kingdom, which located in modern day southern england. Today, one of the current UK counties (Surrey) is located in this ancient kingdom. This is where the Wessex Distillery name comes from. A family owned craft distillery, Wessex use premium ingredients. Where possible they source these from the English countryside, and distill in their copper still. They distill with a simple belief: "We believe the best English gin is made when passionate gin lovers take a no fuss approach, and quality ingredients". Dubonnet Rouge In 1846, Dubonnet Rouge was the created by Sir Joseph Dubonnet (a Parisian wine merchant and chemist). At the time it quickly became a popular medicinal aperitif across the world. The brand name Dubonnet originates from the French word for dark brown - a reference to the original colour of the drink. It is made with a blend of fotified wine (using a distinct blend of grapes, Ruby Red, Ruby Cabernet and Muscat of Alexandria), herbs and spices (including blackcurrant and essence of teas), Chinchona bark (which was the original medicinal ingredient, and is perhaps better known as quinine - and gives a dry tannin note), and finally 100% cane sugar adding a degree of sweetness. Fun Fact: Dubonnet Rouge is famous in the UK as it was a favourite drink of Queen Elizabeth II and her mother, Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. Both enjoyed a cocktail of Dubonnet Rouge (2/3) and Gin (1/3), served over ice with a slice of lemon. In fact, in November 2021, Dubonnet was even awarded a Royal Warrant by Queen Elizabeth II This has a perfect balance of berry fruit sweetness which is followed by the tannin flavour of the quinine as well as its bitter aftertaste. Chivas Regal 18Y Gold Signature Whisky Produced by Chivas Brothers (which is owned by Pernod Ricard) at the Strathisla distillery in Keith, Moray in Speyside (Scotland, UK). This distillery was founded in 1786, and is the oldest continuously operating Highland distillery. Launched in 1997 and created by Master Blender Colin Scott, this 18 year old aged whisky is a blend of over 20 single malts from across Scotland. The aging within the carefully selected casks develops intense flavours and ensures a refined whisky. According to Chivas it has an incredible 85 different flavour notes in each drop. So truly complex, rich and luxurious. The nose is rich and indulgent, drawing you into the whisky with multiple layers of aroma. Dried fruits and buttery toffee merge with dark chocolate and warming spices, all of which are rounded off with a touch of marmalade. On the palate the warming spices come through, on a drink which is velvet like, coating the mouth perfectly. The marmalade again comes through, merging with dark chocolate, a little mellow oak and smoke as well as a touch of elegant floral tones. On the finish the warm notes of spice, oak and in particular cinnamon come to the mouth - and finish extremely warm and long. Wildjac Apple & Elderberry Gin Based in the Wyre Forest, to the South West of Birmingham in the UK, Wildjac strive to produce a range of sustainable and eco-friendly premium botanical spirits. To this end, they hand-craft their drinks using only 100% natural ingredients which (where possible) they source locally. For their latest edition, their Apple & Elderberry Gin, they have created (arguably) the ultimate autumn gin (but delicious enjoyed any time of the year!). It's a deliciously fresh combination of ripe, crisp apples and fruity berries. Deliciously fruit forward, this is one for those who like a gin full of delicious fruity flavours. The botanicals they use are Angelica, Orange, Organic autumn bliss Raspberries and Shropshire prune damsons from the Augernik Fruit Farm (near the distillery), Coriander and of course Juniper. On the nose this has a hint of juniper, which melds perfectly with rich berry aromas. On the palate there are juicy damsons, sweet raspberries, apples and juniper. All blending perfectly. The finish has floral notes, lightening it - but it remains full of fruit, almost jam like. Take a large glass filled with ice and add 50ml of the gin. Gently pour over 150 - 200ml of your chosen tonic, and stir gently. Garnish with a thin slice of crisp apple.
