Fundamental QSARs for Metal Ions

Fundamental QSARs for Metal Ions

Fundamental QSARs for Metal Ions describes the basic and essential applications of quantitative structure–activity relationships (QSARs) for regulatory or industrial scientists who need to predict metal ion bioactivity. It includes 194 QSARs that have been used to predict metal ion toxicity and 86 QSARs that have been used to predict metal ion bioconcentration biosorption and binding. It is an excellent sourcebook for academic industrial and government scientists and policy makers and provides a wealth of information on the biological and chemical activities of metal ions as they impact health and the environment. Fundamental QSARs for Metal Ions was designed for regulatory and regulated organizations that need to use QSARs to predict metal ion bioactivity as they now do for organic chemicals. It has the potential to eliminate resources to test the toxicity of metal ions or to promulgate regulations that require toxicity testing of metal ions because the book illustrates how to construct QSARs to predict metal ion toxicity. In addition the book:Provides a historical perspective and introduction to developing QSARs for metal ionsExplains the electronic structures and atomic parameters of metals essential to understanding differences in chemical properties that influence cation toxicity bioconcentration biosorption and bindingDescribes the chemical properties of metals that are used to develop QSARs for metal ionsIllustrates the descriptors needed to develop metal ion-ligand binding QSARsDiscusses 280 QSARs for metal ions Explains the differences between QSARs for metal ions and Biotic Ligand ModelsLists the regulatory limits of metals and provides examples of regulatory applicationsIllustrates how to construct QSARs for metal ionsDr. John D. Quantifying and Understanding Plant Nitrogen Uptake for Systems Modeling

Quantifying and Understanding Plant Nitrogen Uptake for Systems Modeling

Discusses New Advancements to Improve Existing Simulations of Plant NitrogenWritten by research pioneers and leading scientists in the area of agricultural systems Quantifying and Understanding Plant Nitrogen Uptake for Systems Modeling comprehensively covers plant N uptake in agricultural system models especially for building soil-plant system models. The text illustrates how to minimize the transportation of nitrogen fertilizers in crop production to surface and ground waters as even moderate errors in uptake estimations lead to a dramatic increase in the amount of nitrogen leached into groundwater. It also highlights the knowledge gaps preventing correct simulation of this process and explains what to look for when using a system model and interpreting simulation results. Applies to a Variety of Crops Including Oilseed Wheat Potatoes and MaizeAddressing quantification and synthesis in the context of system modeling this text introduces cutting-edge and original information regarding N uptake not previously offered by other research texts in the field. This in turn benefits scientists professors system modelers and model users in interpreting modeling results for enhancing nitrogen management and developing decision support tools. This volume documents with complex detailed models plant N uptake based on absorption kinetics of transporters across the root cell membranes mass flow and diffusion to the root surface of single or composite roots. It also provides simpler models used in N uptake simulations at the field and watershed scales. Discusses All Areas of the Complex ProcessIn addition to the important processes of nitrogen translocation remobilization and grain protein formation the book documents various philosophies mechanisms and scales in simul

Novel Bioremediation Processes for Treatment of Seleniferous Soils and Sediment

Novel Bioremediation Processes for Treatment of Seleniferous Soils and Sediment

The aim of this Ph. D. was to develop a technology for the remediation of seleniferous soils/sediments and to explore microbial reduction of selenium oxyanions under different respiration conditions and bioreactor configurations. Seleniferous soil collected from the wheat-grown agricultural land in Punjab (India) was characterized and its soil washing was optimized by varying parameters where addition of oxidizing agents showed a maximum selenium removal efficiency. Aquatic plants Lemna minor and Egeria densa were used to study phytoremediation of the selenium-rich soil leachate containing oxidizing agents. Additionally migration of the soluble selenium fraction from the upper to the lower layers and its subsequent reduction and accumulation in the lower layers of the soil column was observed during soil flushing. Furthermore the soil leachate containing selenium oxyanions obtained from soil washing was treated in a UASB reactor by varying the organic feed. Ex situ bioremediation of selenium oxyanions was studied under variable conditions. An aerobic bacterium (Delftia lacustris) capable of transforming selenate and selenite to elemental selenium was isolated and characterized. Anaerobic bioreduction of selenate coupled to methane oxidation was investigated in serum bottles and a biotrickling filter using marine sediment as inoculum. Finally the effect of contamination of other chalcogen oxyanions (tellurium) on selenium bioreduction was studied in a continuous system (UASB reactor). | Novel Bioremediation Processes for Treatment of Seleniferous Soils and Sediment

Green Chemistry Laboratory Manual for General Chemistry

Green Chemistry Laboratory Manual for General Chemistry

Green chemistry involves designing novel ways to create and synthesize products and implement processes that will eliminate or greatly reduce negative environmental impacts. The Green Chemistry Laboratory Manual for General Chemistry provides educational laboratory materials that challenge students with the customary topics found in a general chemistry laboratory manual while encouraging them to investigate the practice of green chemistry. Following a consistent format each lab experiment begins with objectives and prelab questions highlighting important issues that must be understood prior to getting started. This is followed by detailed step-by-step procedures for performing the experiments. Students report specific results in sections designated for data observations and calculations. Once each experiment is completed analysis questions test students comprehension of the results. Additional questions encourage inquiry-based investigations and further research about how green chemistry principles compare with traditional more hazardous experimental methods. By placing the learned concepts within the larger context of green chemistry principles the lab manual enables students to see how these principles can be applied to real-world issues. Performing laboratory exercises through green experiments results in a safer learning environment limits the quantity of hazardous waste generated and reduces the cost for chemicals and waste disposal. Students using this manual will gain a greater appreciation for green chemistry principles and the possibilities for future use in their chosen careers.
