Three Daughters Three Journeys Quest for Cancer Cure

Three Daughters Three Journeys Quest for Cancer Cure

Cancer threatens the lives of people around the world. Women in particular are at risk of certain cancers with a genetic cause. Certain mutations in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes put mothers and daughters at risk of breast and ovarian cancers. Unlike many cancers that most commonly occur after age 60 these inheritable cancers threaten women’s lives health and fertility even when they are young before most would even begin to go for annual mammogram screenings to check for breast cancer. Three Daughters Three Journeys takes on the biggest health issue of our time from a global perspective with three heroines fighting for their lives against cancer. Marzena a Polish oncology nurse has spent her life treating child patients with cancer. Then she confronts it in her own family and her own body. Kamola a rural Indian girl knows she has symptoms of the same disease that took her mother but feels afraid to discuss it with her father and brothers knowing her family cannot afford medical treatment. Kamola confides in Dr Rini Mishra a doctor testing a new treatment called Neelazin using a bacterial anticancer protein in food to destroy cancer cells. Selena a wealthy woman of color in Chicago finds out about her genetic risks of breast and ovarian cancer. She has a choice of preventative surgery that will save her life but remove any chance of having children. As she meets women who struggle to afford cancer treatment Selena dedicates her life to providing affordable homes and counseling to families affected by the disease. Although the drug Neelazin is fictional the possibility of new cancer treatments using bacterial anticancer proteins is being researched now. A problem with the current chemotherapy for cancer treatment is the high toxicity of most of these drugs as these drugs can enter both normal and cancer cells though preferably cancer cells causing the death of normal cells as well that are important in maintaining health. Another problem is that current chemotherapeutic drugs mostly target a single or few key steps that are important for cancer growth and proliferation and inhibit the growth of cancer cells. The cancer cells respond by quickly changing these single targets thereby becoming resistant to the drugs as is reflected in stage IV cancer patients. An alternative to chemotherapy would be to exploit the bacterial evolutionary wisdom and use certain proteins that can have preferential entry to cancer cells in order to minimize normal cell toxicity and multiple targets in cancer cells through protein–protein complex formation thus reducing resistance development in cancer cells. An interesting advantage of protein drugs is to express them as part of food and some recent research seems to suggest that oral consumption of such foods may allow the therapeutic protein to reach the blood stream to target the cancer. Women with the genetic risk factors could soon have the choice of taking a pill or such anticancer protein-expressing food to treat or prevent cancer rather than removing the healthy tissue of the breasts and ovaries. Hopefully they would not have to choose between fertility and survival as is the implied message in this book fictional as it is at this time. | Three Daughters Three Journeys Quest for Cancer Cure

Nanomaterials in Architecture and Art Conservation

Nanomaterials in Architecture and Art Conservation

The conservation and protection of buildings that constitute our cultural heritage are complex tasks calling for a comprehensive knowledge of the historical background of the buildings as well as the construction technologies and materials used. Nanomaterials in Architecture and Art Conservation gives a comprehensive overview of the state of the art of using nanomaterials in conservation sciences mainly for stone mortar and plaster strengthening but also for the consolidation of wall paintings. The book compiles and details deterioration mechanisms of stone and historical mortars as well as methods of characterising and testing consolidation effects. The non- or semi-destructive characterisation methods that will be presented allow additional measurements to characterise objects before and after any interventions. Besides general aspects of inorganic consolidants are targeted. The focus in particular is the application of nanolime as a new consolidation agent. Basic characteristics and application advices as well as beneficial combinations with other consolidation agents such as silicic acid esters are emphasised. What makes this book so special is the large number of practical applications described from the viewpoint of different restorers offering a direct inside view of the procedure for the conservation of historical monuments. Restorers dealing with stone mortar and plaster conservation; artists; advanced undergraduate- and graduate-level students of conservation science art and nanotechnology; offices for the protection of monuments and heritage agencies; and researchers in materials science conservation nanotechnology and chemistry especially those with an interest in applied sciences will find this book a great reference.

Multifragmentation in Heavy-Ion Reactions Theory and Experiments

Multifragmentation in Heavy-Ion Reactions Theory and Experiments

This book provides a collection of reviews of some of the recent developments in nuclear physics research at intermediate energies from across the globe. It especially focuses on the most essential aspects such as multifragmentation and associated phenomena in nuclear collisions with the incident energy region between a few MeV and several hundreds of MeV/nucleon. The topic of the book—multifragmentation—was chosen based on the fact that all heavy-ion collisions revolve around a fragmenting system which is also thought to have a link to phase transitions. One unique and valuable dimension of this book is that it has brought together the research of several experts working in the field of intermediate energy heavy-ion collisions in various renowned laboratories of the world. It provides a thorough review of the recent developments in various related phenomena especially multifragmentation observed at the intermediate-energy range both theoretically and experimentally. It extensively discusses the concept of nuclear symmetry energy which is important for the nuclear physics and astrophysics communities. In addition the book identifies potential research directions and technologies that will drive future innovations. It will serve as a valuable reference for a larger audience including students who wish to pursue a career in nuclear physics and astrophysics. | Multifragmentation in Heavy-Ion Reactions Theory and Experiments

From Atoms to Higgs Bosons Voyages in Quasi-Spacetime

From Atoms to Higgs Bosons Voyages in Quasi-Spacetime

The announcement in 2012 that the Higgs boson had been discovered was understood as a watershed moment for the Standard Model of particle physics. It was deemed a triumphant event in the reductionist quest that had begun centuries ago with the ancient Greek natural philosophers. Physicists basked in the satisfaction of explaining to the world that the ultimate cause of mass in our universe had been unveiled at CERN Switzerland. The Standard Model of particle physics is now understood by many to have arrived at a satisfactory description of entities and interactions on the smallest physical scales: elementary quarks leptons and intermediary gauge bosons residing within a four-dimensional spacetime continuum. Throughout the historical journey of reductionist physics mathematics has played an increasingly dominant role. Indeed abstract mathematics has now become indispensable in guiding our discovery of the physical world. Elementary particles are endowed with abstract existence in accordance with their appearance in complicated equations. Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle originally intended to estimate practical measurement uncertainties now bequeaths a numerical fuzziness to the structure of reality. Particle physicists have borrowed effective mathematical tools originally invented and employed by condensed matter physicists to approximate the complex structures and dynamics of solids and liquids and bestowed on them the authority to define basic physical reality. The discovery of the Higgs boson was a result of these kinds of strategies used by particle physicists to take the latest steps on the reductionist quest. This book offers a constructive critique of the modern orthodoxy into which all aspiring young physicists are now trained that the ever-evolving mathematical models of modern physics are leading us toward a truer understanding of the real physical world. The authors propose that among modern physicists physical realism has been largely replaced—in actual practice—by quasirealism a problematic philosophical approach that interprets the statements of abstract effective mathematical models as providing direct information about reality. History may judge that physics in the twentieth century despite its seeming successes involved a profound deviation from the historical reductionist voyage to fathom the mysteries of the physical universe. | From Atoms to Higgs Bosons Voyages in Quasi-Spacetime
