Removal of the Property Qualification for Voting in the United States Strategy and Suffrage

Removal of the Property Qualification for Voting in the United States Strategy and Suffrage

In Colonial America democracy was centered in provincial assemblies and based on the collection of neighbors whose freehold ownership made them permanent stakeholders in the community. The removal of the property qualification for voting in the United States occurred over three-quarters of a century and was among the more important events in the history of democratization functioning to shift voting from a corporate privilege toward a human right. Moving beyond the standard histories of property standard histories of property qualification removal Justin Moeller and Ronald F. King adopt the theories and methods of social science to discover underlying patterns and regularities attempting a more systematic understanding of subject. While no historical event has a single cause party consolidation and party competition provided a necessary mechanism making background factors politically relevant. No change in franchise rules could occur without the explicit consent of incumbent politicians always sensitive to the anticipated impact. Moeller and King argue that political parties acted strategically accepting or rejecting removal of the property qualification as a means of advancing their electoral position. The authors identify four different variants of the strategic calculation variable significantly helping to explain both the temporal differences across states and the pattern of contestation with each state individually. | Removal of the Property Qualification for Voting in the United States Strategy and Suffrage

When Cats Reigned Like Kings On the Trail of the Sacred Cats

When Cats Reigned Like Kings On the Trail of the Sacred Cats

In her fascinating exploration of feline history Georgie Anne Geyer explores the connections between the royal and sacred felines of ancient civilizations and the beloved domestic cats of today. Chasing an irresistible mystery across the globe Geyer conducts exhaustive research into the little-known puzzle of how cats came to occupy their unique position in the lives of humans. Treated with the tenacity resourcefulness and narrative instinct of a seasoned foreign correspondent the investigation yields unexpected answers and poses tantalizing new questions. It was Geyer's curiosity about her own cats that inspired her to study the history of human-feline relations and especially the exalted status of cats among the ancients as royal or sacred beings. In Egypt Geyer learned of the cat-goddess Bastet and of the cat's role in the transmigration of souls. In Myanmar she saw Leonardo DiCaprio Ricky Martin and the other incongruously named cats of the Nga Phe Kyaung monastery trained by the monks to jump through hoops. She even met a family who dutifully guards the heritage of the Japanese Bobtail cultivating the line in of all places rural Virginia. Richly illustrated with photographs of Geyer's journeys and historical cat images When Cats Reigned Like Kings describes forty-one recognized modern cat breeds plus other popular cats. Every cat lover can thus trace his or her cat to these breeds and their many relatives. The result is a remarkable book bound to delight and amaze cat fanciers and adventure seekers. | When Cats Reigned Like Kings On the Trail of the Sacred Cats

Cognitive Analytic Therapy and the Politics of Mental Health

Comprehensive Aphasia Test

Comprehensive Aphasia Test

The Comprehensive Aphasia Test (CAT) is a test for use with people who have acquired aphasia that can be completed over one or two assessment sessions. The test includes a user manual a cognitive screen and language battery and a scoring booklet which are all unchanged since the previous edition and - new to this release - a concise Aphasia Impact Questionnaire which replaces the Disability Questionnaire. The cognitive section assesses people's abilities across a range of task that can affect rehabilitation. Forming the main body of the test the language battery provides a profile of performance across all modalities of language production and comprehension. The Aphasia Impact Questionnaire is a pictorial Patient Reported Outcome Measure which produces both qualitative and quantitative information. It was co-produced with people with aphasia. It supports the person with aphasia to give a subjective rating of how language difficulties identified in the Language Battery affect their daily life enabling first steps towards goal setting. By capturing this information the CAT helps the therapist track changes over the course of recovery and provides a guide to likely outcomes on the basis of an early assessment. The first two sections of the CAT are supported by normative data on people both with and without aphasia and extensive data on reliability and clinical validity. The CAT allows users to: Identify underlying impairments Find where to focus assessments using PALPA and other batteries Ascertain the practical psychological and social impact of aphasia from the perceptive of the person with aphasia Create a profile of strengths and weaknesses to guide therapy. Structured around fully up-to-date models of language assessment from cognitive neuropsychology to patient reported outcome measures test is an indispensable resource for speech and language therapists and researchers. It provides as much information about people's language ability as possible in a relatively brief test designed to be completed in 90-120 minutes. Additional scoring booklets can be ordered in packs of 10 at https://www. routledge. com/Comprehensive-Aphasia-Test-Scoring-Book-pack-of-10/Swinburn-Porter-Howard/p/book/ 9781032128177

Phyto Principles and Resources for Site Remediation and Landscape Design

Phyto Principles and Resources for Site Remediation and Landscape Design

Phyto presents the concepts of phytoremediation and phytotechnology in one comprehensive guide illustrating when plants can be considered for the uptake removal or mitigation of on-site pollutants. Current scientific case studies are covered highlighting the advantages and limitations of plant-based cleanup. Typical contaminant groups found in the built environment are explained and plant lists for mitigation of specific contaminants are included where applicable. This is the first book to address the benefits of phytotechnologies from a design point of view taking complex scientific terms and translating the research into an easy-to-understand reference book for those involved in creating planting solutions. Typically phytotechnology planting techniques are currently employed post-site contamination to help clean up already contaminated soil by taking advantage of the positive effects that plants can have upon harmful toxins and chemicals. This book presents a new concept to create projective planting designs with preventative phytotechnology abilities phytobuffering where future pollution may be expected for particular site programs. Filled with tables photographs and detailed drawings Kennen and Kirkwood's text guides the reader through the process of selecting plants for their aesthetic and environmental qualities combined with their contaminant-removal benefits. | Phyto Principles and Resources for Site Remediation and Landscape Design

The Routledge Companion to Indigenous Repatriation Return Reconcile Renew

This volume brings together Indigenous and non-Indigenous repatriation practitioners and researchers to provide the reader with an international overview of the removal and return of Ancestral Remains. The Ancestral Remains of Indigenous peoples are today housed in museums and other collecting institutions globally. They were taken from anywhere the deceased can be found and their removal occurred within a context of deep power imbalance within a colonial project that had a lasting effect on Indigenous peoples worldwide. Through the efforts of First Nations campaigners many have returned home. However a large number are still retained. In many countries the repatriation issue has driven a profound change in the relationship between Indigenous peoples and collecting institutions. It has enabled significant steps towards resetting this relationship from one constrained by colonisation to one that seeks a more just dignified and truthful basis for interaction. The history of repatriation is one of Indigenous perseverance and success. The authors of this book contribute major new work and explore new facets of this global movement. They reflect on nearly 40 years of repatriation its meaning and value impact and effect. This book is an invaluable contribution to repatriation practice and research providing a wealth of new knowledge to readers with interests in Indigenous histories self-determination and the relationship between collecting institutions and Indigenous peoples. | The Routledge Companion to Indigenous Repatriation Return Reconcile Renew

Using Technologies for Creative-Text Translation

Using Technologies for Creative-Text Translation

This collection reflects on the state of the art of research into the use of translation technologies in the translation of creative texts encompassing literary texts but also extending beyond to cultural texts and charts their development and paths for further research. Bringing together perspectives from scholars across the discipline the book considers recent trends and developments in technology that have spurred growing interest in the use of computer-aided translation (CAT) and machine translation (MT) tools in literary translation. Chapters examine the relationships between translators and these tools—the extent to which they already use such technologies the challenges they face and prevailing attitudes towards these tools—as well as the ethical implications of such technologies in translation practice. The volume gives special focus to drawing on examples with and beyond traditional literary genres to look to these technologies’ use in working with the larger group of creative texts setting the stage for many future research opportunities. The book will be of particular interest to students and scholars in translation studies especially those with an interest in literary translation translation technology translation practice and translation ethics. British Origins and American Practice of Impeachment

British Origins and American Practice of Impeachment

This collection brings together historians political scientists and legal scholars to explore the Anglo-American origins of impeachment and its use in the USA. Impeachment originated in England during the Good Parliament of 1376. It was used subject to several periods of disuse until the beginning of the nineteenth century. The British form of impeachment in turn inspired the drafters of the US Constitution and the inclusion of a mechanism permitting the removal of members of the federal executive and federal judiciary. These Anglo-American origins of impeachment have inspired many constitutions around the globe to include impeachment mechanisms which permit in most cases the legislature to remove the President a Prime Minister ministers and judges. This volume explores the origins influence and practice of impeachment. Divided into three parts the history of impeachment and how it developed in British history is the focus of part one. The inclusion of Ireland reflects the constitutional status of impeachment the legacy of union with Great Britain and how impeachment can still serve as a deterrent. Part two examines the adoption of impeachment within the US Constitution and its use in practice. The third and final part discusses impeachment in the twenty-first century. The book will be an essential resource for students academics and researchers in law political science and history. | British Origins and American Practice of Impeachment

Human Resource Management in the Indian Tea Industry

Human Resource Management in the Indian Tea Industry

Liberalization Privatization and Globalization policy was advocated in India in 1991 under the supervision of P. V. Narasimha Rao the then Prime Minister of India. As a consequence the tea plantation industry was largely affected. It has confronted difficult competition because of the simplification of tariff barriers and the removal of the quantity restrictions on imports. The result of these on the share of export of Indian tea has declined the price has plunged and the profitability has reduced. To remain competitive in the market tea-producing companies have been forced to reduce the various costs especially labour costs. Due to this tea companies are not in a position to fulfil their responsibilities such as health safety welfare and working conditions to the workers. Besides improper recruitment of labour lack of proper training facilities and even irregularities in payment of wages have been increased significantly. As a result 1. 2 million workers in the tea industry to sustain themselves and their families have been adversely affected. This leads to labour unrest and the industry has become vulnerable. The final impact of all these issues spreads to the quality of tea and profitability of the industry in India. This book examines the existing human resource management practices in the Indian tea industry. It adopts a simplified yet comprehensive approach to showcase workforce management in the tea industry. This book will be of value to postgraduate students researchers HR professionals and policymakers in the fields of human resource management business history and industrial relations. | Human Resource Management in the Indian Tea Industry

The Meaning of History

The Meaning of History

In her brilliant new opening essay Banerjee says of Berdyaev he was never more than a curious but unwelcome guest in history. He fearlessly engaged it on the level of ideas while remaining alien to its means and ends gifted with an incurable longing for transcendence. Witness to two world wars Berdyaev observed the destruction of established cultures in the traumatic birth of new systems. Arrested on political suspicion-by Czarist and then by Bolshevik police he died in exile in France in 1948 carrying forth his intellectual work until the end. Berdyaev considered the philosophy of history as a field that laid the foundations of the Russian national consciousness. Its disputes were centered on distinctions between Slavophiles and Westerners East and West. The Meaning of History was an early effort following World War I that attempted to revive this perspective. With the removal of Communism as a ruling system in Russia that nation returned to an elaboration of a religious philosophy of history as the specific mission of Russian thought. This volume thus has contemporary significance. Its sense of the apocalypse which distinguishes Russian from Western thought gives the book its specifically religious character. In order to grasp and oppose the complex phenomenon of social and cultural disintegration Berdyaev shows that human beings must rely upon some internal dialectic. After the debacle of the war the moment arrived to integrate Russian historical experiences into those of a Europe which although torn by schism still claimed to be the descendant of Christendom. The book is remarkable for its powerful stylistic grace and astonishingly contemporary feeling.

The Cherokee Nation

The Cherokee Nation

This volume presents the succession of treaties between 1785 and 1868 that reduced the holdings of the Cherokee Nation east of the Mississippi and culminated in their removal to Indian territory. Each document is accompanied by a detailed description of its antecedent conditions the negotiations that led up to it and its consequences. The events described here ended more than a century ago but the motives and actions of the participants and the effects of the compromises and decisions they made are sadly familiar. The story presented here needs to be understood by everyone concerned with the survival of diverse ways of life and the quality of the relationships among peoples. The impersonal style of Royce's presentation enhances the poignancy of the Cherokee experience. Repeated declarations of peace and perpetual friendship contrast with repeated violations of treaties approved by Congress and the impotence of a people to defend their ancestral lands. The Cherokee trail of broken treaties has left us with a heritage of guilt and frustration that we have yet to overcome. The Native American Library in which this volume appears has been initiated by the National Anthropological Archives of the National Museum of Natural History Smithsonian Institution to publish original works by Indians and reprints selected by the tribes involved. Royce's work which was included in the Fifth Annual Report of the Bureau of American Ethnology is republished at the request of the Governing Body of the Cherokee Nation. The original text is prefaced by an evaluation of Royce and his work by Richard Mack Bettis and contains several illustrations not included in the earlier edition.
