Ibbs and Tillett The Rise and Fall of a Musical Empire

Ibbs and Tillett The Rise and Fall of a Musical Empire

For the greater part of the twentieth century Ibbs and Tillett's concert agency was to the British music industry what Marks and Spencer is to the world of the department store. The roll-call of famous musicians on its books was unmatched and included such international stars as Clara Butt Fritz Kreisler Pablo Casals Sergei Rachmaninov Andr Segovia Kathleen Ferrier Myra Hess Jacqueline du Pr Clifford Curzon and Vladimir Ashkenazy to name but a handful. From 1906 the success of the company was due to the dedication of its founders Robert Leigh Ibbs and John Tillett. After their deaths the agency was run by the latter's wife Emmie who dubbed the 'Duchess of Wigmore Street' became one of the most formidable yet respected women in British music. The history of this unique institution and its owners is told here for the first time often through the fascinating letters that were exchanged between the artists themselves and the agency. It begins in the latter years of the 19th century with the concert and theatrical manager Narciso Vert for whom both Ibbs and Tillett worked until his death in 1905. The story then becomes a history of musical life in twentieth-century Britain illuminating aspects of the day-to-day management of concerts and festivals the lives and livelihoods of professional musicians as well as those who strove to join their ranks through audition or recommendation. The changing profile and particularly the onset and development of personal management of artists represented by Ibbs and Tillett and their reception in the press can be viewed as a barometer of musical taste. The demise of the agency in 1990 was indicative of just how much the world of British music had changed by the end of the century but despite its loss to the profession the legacy and influence of Ibbs and Tillett has remained a benchmark in today's highly competitive world of artist management and concert promotion many of whose principal operators began | Ibbs and Tillett The Rise and Fall of a Musical Empire

Gender and Educational Achievement

Gender and Educational Achievement

Gender inequalities in education – in terms of systematic variations in access to educational institutions in competencies school marks and educational certificates along the axis of gender – have tremendously changed over the course of the 20th century. Although this does not apply to all stages and areas of the educational career it is particularly obvious looking at upper secondary education. Before the major boost of educational expansion in the 1960s women’s participation in upper secondary general education and their chances to successfully finish this educational pathway have been lower than men’s. However towards the end of the 20th century women were outperforming men in many European countries and beyond. The international contributions to this book attempt to shed light on the mechanisms behind gender inequalities and the changes made to reduce this inequality. Topics explored by the contributors include gender in science education in the UK; women’s education in Luxembourg in the 19th and 20th century; the ‘gender gap’ debates and their rhetoric in the UK and Finland; sociological perspectives on the gender-equality discourse in Finland; changing gender differences in West Germany in the 20th century; the interplay of subjective well-being and educational attainment in Switzerland; and a psychological perspective on gender identities gender-related perceptions students’ motivation intelligence personality and the interaction between student and teacher gender. Reanimating Regions Culture Politics and Performance

Reanimating Regions Culture Politics and Performance

Writing regions undertaking a regional study was once a standard form of geographic communication and critique. This was until the quantitative revolution in the middle of the previous century and more definitively the critical turn in human geography towards the end of the twentieth century. From then on writing regions as they were experienced phenomenologically or arguing culturally historically and politically with regions was deemed to be old-fashioned. Yet the region is and always will be a central geographical concept and thinking about regions can tell us a lot about the history of the discipline called geography. Despite taking up an identifiable place within the geographical imagination in scholarship and beyond region remains a relatively forgotten under-used and in part under-theorised term. Reanimating Regions marks the continued reinvigoration of a set of disciplinary debates surrounding regions the regional and regional geography. Across 18 chapters from international interdisciplinary scholars this book writes and performs region as a temporary permanence something held stable not fixed and absolute at different points in time for different purposes. There is as this expansive volume outlines no single reading of a region. Reanimating Regions collectively rebalances the region within geography and geographical thought. In renewing the geography of regions as not only a site of investigation but also as an analytical framework through which to write the world what emerges is a powerful reworking of the geographic imagination. Read against one another the chapters weave together timely commentaries on region and regions across the globe with a particular emphasis upon the regional as played out in the United Kingdom and regional worlds both within and beyond Europe offering chapters from Africa and South America. Adam Smith and The Wealth of Nations in Spain A History of Reception Dissemination Adaptation and Application 1777–1840

This book looks at the long journey of Smith’s ideas from Scotland to peninsular Spain reconstructing in detail the reception adaptation interpretation and application of Smith's central concepts from 1777 up to 1840. Heritage Memory and Punishment Remembering Colonial Prisons in East Asia

Heritage Memory and Punishment Remembering Colonial Prisons in East Asia

Based on a transnational study of decommissioned postcolonial prisons in Taiwan (Taipei and Chiayi) South Korea (Seoul) and China (Lushun) this book offers a critical reading of prisons as a particular colonial product the current restoration of which as national heritage is closely related to the evolving conceptualization of punishment. Focusing on the colonial prisons built by the Japanese Empire in the first half of the twentieth century it illuminates how punishment has been considered a subject of modernization while the contemporary use of prisons as heritage tends to reduce the process of colonial modernity to oppression and atrocity – thus constituting a heritage of shame and death which postcolonial societies blame upon the former colonizers. A study of how the remembering of punishment and imprisonment reflects the attempts of postcolonial cities to re-articulate an understanding of the present by correcting the past Heritage Memory and Punishment examines how prisons were designed built partially demolished preserved and redeveloped across political regimes demonstrating the ways in which the selective use of prisons as heritage reframed through nationalism leaves marks on urban contexts that remain long after the prisons themselves are decommissioned. As such it will appeal to scholars of sociology geography the built environment and heritage with interests in memory studies and dark tourism. | Heritage Memory and Punishment Remembering Colonial Prisons in East Asia

Drawing Parallels Knowledge Production in Axonometric Isometric and Oblique Drawings

Drawing Parallels Knowledge Production in Axonometric Isometric and Oblique Drawings

Drawing Parallels expands your understanding of the workings of architects by looking at their work from an alternative perspective. The book focuses on parallel projections such as axonometric isometric and oblique drawings. Ray Lucas argues that by retracing the marks made by architects we can begin to engage more directly with their practice as it is only by redrawing the work that hidden aspects are revealed. The practice of drawing offers significantly different insights not easily accessible through discourse analysis critical theory or observation. Using James Stirling JJP Oud Peter Eisenman John Hejduk and Cedric Price as case studies Lucas highlights each architect's creative practices which he anaylses with reference to Bergson's concepts of temporality and cretivity discussing ther manner in which creative problems are explored and solved. The book also draws on a range of anthropological ideas including skilled practice and enchantment in order to explore why axonometrics are important to architecture and questions the degree to which the drawing convention influences the forms produced by architects. With 60 black-and-white images to illustrate design development this book would be an essential read for academics and students of architecture with a particular interest in further understanding the inner workings of the architectural creative process. | Drawing Parallels Knowledge Production in Axonometric Isometric and Oblique Drawings

Political Economy of Contemporary Italy The Economic Crisis and State Intervention

Political Economy of Contemporary Italy The Economic Crisis and State Intervention

Drawing on Kaleckian and Kaldorian approaches Political Economy of Contemporary Italy: The Economic Crisis and State Intervention explores the reasons behind the stagnation of the Italian economy from the 1970s and suggests policy solutions to ease the crisis. The central thesis of the book is that from the early 1990s Italy experienced a constant reduction of both private and public investment which combined with increasing labour precariousness and wage moderation contributed to the decline of both labour productivity and economic growth. It is argued that lack of industrial policies amplified the problem of the poor macroeconomic performance since Italian firms – small-sized and non-innovating – were incapable of staying competitive on the global scene. Net exports did not compensate for the decline of public spending private investment and consumption. It is also shown that in these respects Italy presents an interesting case study with wider ramifications for it was involved in the global process of intensifying the neoliberal agenda but at a faster rate than other OECD countries. The book concludes with a call for an alternative economic policy in order to promote innovation reduce unemployment and stimulate economic growth. This book marks a significant contribution to the literature on the recent history of the European economy Italian studies and the history of economic thought. | Political Economy of Contemporary Italy The Economic Crisis and State Intervention

Working with Theories of Refusal and Decolonization in Higher Education

Working with Theories of Refusal and Decolonization in Higher Education

This volume argues that refusal is a viable political ethics in education. It is an ethics that allows space for new possibilities to emerge with the potential to enrich higher education study and pedagogies in the future. Chapters examine the ethical epistemological political and affective premises of refusing the colonial university and reflect upon what refusal means for higher education decolonization across international settings. Refusal marks a political ethos and praxis that denies resists reframes and redirects colonial and neoliberal logics while asserting diverse sovereignties and lifeworlds. Whereas resistance may reinscribe the weakness of the colonized in the power relations with the colonizer refusal interrupts the smooth operation of power relations denying the authority of the settler state and remaking the rules of engagement. It is a political stance and action that denies the very legitimacy of power over the subjugated. This collection views refusal not as an end in itself nor as a mode of critique but as a necessary first step for educators and students in higher education to invest in the idea of radically different modes of futurity. It explores how educators and students in higher education can invent pedagogies of refusal that function ethically affectively and politically and asks: What do pedagogies of refusal look like? How might western universities sustain and support refusal rather than discipline it? What assumptions are sustained by ruling out certain educational futures as out of bounds or impossible? This book will be important reading for researchers scholars and educators in Decolonizing Education Higher Education Transformation and Philosophy of Education. It will also be valuable to policymakers and activists who are considering how refusal might be carried out within and outside institutions. | Working with Theories of Refusal and Decolonization in Higher Education

Pricing Carbon Emissions Economic Reality and Utopia

Pricing Carbon Emissions Economic Reality and Utopia

Pricing Carbon Emissions provides an economic critique on the utopian idea of a uniform carbon price for addressing rising carbon emissions exposing the flaws in the economic propositions with a key focus on the EU’s Emissions Trading System (ETS). After an Executive Summary of the contents the chapters build up understanding of orthodox economics’ role in protecting the neoliberal paradigm. A salient case the ETS is successful in shielding the Business-as-Usual activities of the EU’s industry however this book argues that the system fails in creating innovation for decarbonizing production technologies. A subsequent political economy analysis by the author points to the discursive power of giant fossil fuel and electricity companies keeping up a façade of Cap-and-Trade utopia and hiding the reality of free permit donations and administrative price control concealing financial bills mostly paid by household electricity customers. The twilights between reality and utopia in the EU’s ETS are exposed concluding an immediate end of the system is necessary for effective and just climate policy. The work argues that the proposition of shifting to a global uniform carbon tax is equally utopian. In practice a uniform price applied on heterogeneous cases is not a source of benefits but one of ad-hoc adjustments exceptions and exemptions. Carbon pricing does not induce innovation however assumed by the economic models used by IPCC for advising global climate policy. Thus it is persuasively demonstrated by the author that these schemes are doomed to failure and room and resources need to be created for more effective and just climate politics. The book’s conclusion is based on economic arguments complementing the critique of political scientists. This book is written for a broad audience interested in climate policy eager to understand why decarbonizing progress is slow as it is. It marks a significant addition to the literature on climate politics carbon pricing and the political economy of the environment more broadly. Bisexual and Pansexual Identities Exploring and Challenging Invisibility and Invalidation

This book explores the invisibility and invalidation of bisexuality from the past to the present and is unique in extending the discussion to focus on contemporary and emerging identities. The existing research on biphobia and bisexual marginalisation is synthesised to explore how bisexuality has often been invisible or invalidated. Hayfield then evidences clear examples of the invisibility and invalidation of bisexuality pansexuality and asexuality within education employment mainstream mass media and the wider culture. Throughout the book there is consideration of the impact that this invisibility and invalidation has on people’s sense of identity and on their health and wellbeing. It concludes with a discussion of how bisexuality pansexuality and asexuality have become somewhat more visible than in the past and the potential that visibility holds for recognition and representation. This is fascinating reading for students and academics interested in in bisexuality pansexuality and asexual spectrum identities and for those who have a personal interest in bisexuality pansexuality and asexuality. | Bisexual and Pansexual Identities Exploring and Challenging Invisibility and Invalidation
