Community Writing Researching Social Issues Through Composition

Community Writing Researching Social Issues Through Composition

Community Writing: Researching Social Issues Through Composition employs a series of assignments that guide students to research and write about issues confronting their individual communities. Students start by identifying a community to which they belong and focusing on problems in it and then analyze possible solutions construct arguments for them decide which are likely to succeed and consider how to initiate action. This is a primary text for first-year composition courses covering the basics of the writing process. The assignments are recursive. Short writing assignments in each chapter build up to longer papers. Each of the assignment questions is accompanied by a guide to thinking about and writing the assigned paper followed by a short Focus On reading that provides a brief account of community activism a media case study or a notable success story. The longer papers are accompanied by in-class peer reading groups. Each successive peer reading attempts a higher level of conceptual critique. By working together throughout the semester students create increasingly adept peer groups familiar with all stages of each other's research. The book is carefully structured but there is plenty of give in it allowing instructors to be flexible in adapting it to the needs of their students and courses. Community Writing: is distinguished by pedagogy based on a collaborative process-oriented service learning approach that emphasizes media critique and field research on community issues chosen by individual students; answers real student questions such as: Where do I find articles on my topic? The Routledge Companion to Vsevolod Meyerhold

The Routledge Companion to Vsevolod Meyerhold

The Routledge Companion to Vsevolod Meyerhold brings together a wealth of scholarship on one of the foremost innovators in European theatre. It presents a detailed picture of the Russian director’s work from when it first emerged on the modern stage to its multifarious present-day manifestations. By combining an historical focus with the latest contemporary research from an international range of perspectives and authors this collection marks an important moment in Meyerhold studies as well as offering a new assessment of his relation to today's theatre-making. Its dynamic blend of research is presented in five sections: Histories enlarges on more conventional subjects like the grotesque and Biomechanics to overlooked topics such as Meyerhold's ‘failed’ projects and his work in film; Collaborations and Connections extends understandings of Meyerhold’s well-known collaborative capacities to consider new cultural influences and lesser known working relationships; Sources engages with hitherto untapped material in Meyerhold’s oeuvre by reproducing and contextualising previously untranslated primary sources on his work; Practitioner Voices offer lively on the ground testimony of the contemporary impact of Meyerhold's practice; Meyerhold in New Contexts maps the routes of his practice across continents and examines ways in which his work is being applied in a number of contemporary scenarios such as motion capture computer-based 3D visualisations and the ‘new normal’ of digital pedagogy. This is a key resource for students and scholars of European Theatre acting theory and actor training as well as for those more broadly interested in the socio-political impact of theatre.

The Routledge Companion to Journalism in the Global South

The Routledge Companion to Journalism in the Global South

Responding to mounting calls to decenter and decolonize journalism The Routledge Companion to Journalism in the Global South examines not only the deep-seated challenges associated with the historical imposition of Western journalism standards on constituencies of the Global South but also the opportunities presented to journalists and journalism educators if they choose to partake in international collaboration and education. This collection returns to fundamental questions around the meaning value and practices of journalism from alternative methodological theoretical and epistemological perspectives. These questions include: What really is journalism? Who gets to and who is qualified to define it? What role do ethics play? What are the current trends challenges and opportunities for journalism in the Global South? How is news covered reported written and edited in non-Western settings? What can journalism players living and working in industrialized markets learn from their non-Western colleagues and counterparts and vice versa? Contributors challenge accepted universal ethical standards while showing the relevance of customs traditions and cultures in defining and shaping local and regional journalism. Showcasing some of the most important research on journalism in the Global South and by journalists based in the Global South this companion is key reading for anyone researching the principles and practices of journalism from a de-essentialized perspective.
