Routledge Handbook of Non-Violent Extremism Groups Perspectives and New Debates

Routledge Handbook of Non-Violent Extremism Groups Perspectives and New Debates

This Handbook provides the first in-depth analysis of non-violent extremism across different ideologies and geographic centres a topic overshadowed until now by the political and academic focus on violent and jihadi extremism in the Global North. Whilst acknowledging the potentiality of non-violent extremism as a precursor to terrorism this Handbook argues that non-violent extremism ought to be considered a stand-alone area of study. Focusing on Islamist Buddhist Hindu far-right far-left environmentalist and feminist manifestations the Handbook discusses the ideological foundation of their ‘war on ideas’ against the prevailing socio-political and cultural systems in which they operate and provides an empirical examination of their main claims and perspectives. This is supplemented by a truly global overview of non-violent extremist groups not only in Europe and the United States but also in Africa Asia Oceania and the Middle East. The Handbook thus answers a call to decolonise knowledge that is especially prescient given both the complicity of non-violent extremists with authoritarian states and the dynamic of oppression towards more progressive groups in the Global South. The Handbook will appeal to those studying extremism radicalisation and terrorism. It intersects several relevant disciplines including social movement studies political science criminology Islamic studies and anthropology. | Routledge Handbook of Non-Violent Extremism Groups Perspectives and New Debates

Discourse Particles in Asian Languages

Discourse Particles in Asian Languages

Within linguistics there has been a great deal of interest in discourse particles for some time now especially within semantics and pragmatics. The term ‘discourse particles’ has been used to cover a broad range of phenomena including such things as ‘sentence final particles ’ ‘discourse adverbs’ and other related phenomena. However most research in the area (particularly within formal semantics and pragmatics) focuses on a restricted set of languages and there is little consensus on the proper formal treatment of particles partly due to the limited range of data available. In recent years there has been extensive development of the formal approach to discourse particles which often treats these words as devices for marking information update. Also important is the extension of data to non-Western languages like Japanese Korean or Chinese. These volumes are the first to give an exclusive focus on particles in non-European languages (in this case Asian languages) from the perspective of formal as well as non-formal semantics and pragmatics. These volumes include papers on Japanese Mandarin Tagalog Kimaragang Dusun Malay Singlish Thai and Vietnamese. The papers are informed by recent theoretical work in formal semantics and pragmatics relating to the meaning of particles. The collection contributes to our theoretical understanding of the meaning of discourse particles and to empirical knowledge of discourse particles in the languages of Asia. | Discourse Particles in Asian Languages

The Routledge Companion to Journalism in the Global South

The Routledge Companion to Journalism in the Global South

Responding to mounting calls to decenter and decolonize journalism The Routledge Companion to Journalism in the Global South examines not only the deep-seated challenges associated with the historical imposition of Western journalism standards on constituencies of the Global South but also the opportunities presented to journalists and journalism educators if they choose to partake in international collaboration and education. These questions include: What really is journalism? Who gets to and who is qualified to define it? What role do ethics play? What are the current trends challenges and opportunities for journalism in the Global South? How is news covered reported written and edited in non-Western settings? What can journalism players living and working in industrialized markets learn from their non-Western colleagues and counterparts and vice versa? Contributors challenge accepted universal ethical standards while showing the relevance of customs traditions and cultures in defining and shaping local and regional journalism. Showcasing some of the most important research on journalism in the Global South and by journalists based in the Global South this companion is key reading for anyone researching the principles and practices of journalism from a de-essentialized perspective.

Routledge Handbook of Seabed Mining and the Law of the Sea

Routledge Handbook of Seabed Mining and the Law of the Sea

For years exploration of seabed natural resources has been ongoing while exploitation in deep marine areas remained unrealistic due to land-based mineral availability and costs. However mounting pressures from the green transition climate change and long-lasting fears of terrestrial minerals scarcity now bring exploitation prospects closer to reality. This has caused concern to a growing chorus of States scientists industries NGOs and parts of civil society due to the potential environmental and social impacts of these activities. As a result the idea of a moratorium or ‘precautionary pause’ is gaining ground. Yet an important number of interpretation and implementation issues of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and the 1994 Agreement remain to be answered as a means to move forward in accordance with international law. This multidisciplinary book designed to become the essential handbook on the matter provides a global overview of the national regional and international regulatory frameworks applicable to the exploration and exploitation of seabed minerals on the continental shelf and the Area as well as the related state of the science on the matter. By presenting historical and geopolitical context crucial to understanding regulation evolution the book equips readers with foundational legal and policy knowledge. It furthermore addresses contemporary and prospective issues and offers unique insights into regional and national practices including non-Party States to UNCLOS. The Routledge Handbook of the Gig Economy

The Routledge Handbook of the Gig Economy

Research on the growth of the precarious economy is of signifi cant interest as the economy increasingly becomes dependent on gig work. However as platform and automated service work has grown there remains a chasm in understanding the key aspects of digital labour. This handbook presents comprehensive theoretical empirical and historical accounts of the political economy of informal work from the late 20th century to the present. It examines the rich and varied analysis and critique of the informalisation of work focusing on its most signifi cant theories intellectual traditions and authors. It highlights the political social cultural and developmental impact of the deterioration of employment in the Global North and Global South as well as the extreme threat posed to the planet by the growth of contingent work poverty and enduring and increasing inequalities produced and reproduced by the reformation of capitalism in the contemporary age of neoliberal capitalism. The period from the 1980s to the present is marked by the expanded extraction of surplus value from workers through the creation of non-standard jobs and the restructuring of work. A central component of the restructuring of work is the extension of gig employment through the development of algorithmic platforms which direct labourers to perform discrete tasks. This is a definitive collection representing the primary reference work contributing to our understanding of the subject. The book is written and presented in a clear manner accessible to scholars and researchers of international political economy labour economics and sociology who are eager for new research examining this phenomenon as well as specialists in the field of labour relations.
