Phrenology and the Origins of Victorian Scientific Naturalism

Phrenology and the Origins of Victorian Scientific Naturalism

Through a reassessment of phrenology Phrenology and the Origins of Victorian Scientific Naturalism sheds light on all kinds of works in Victorian Britain and America which have previously been unnoticed or were simply referred to with a vague 'naturalism of the times' explanation. It is often assumed that the scientific naturalism familiar in late nineteenth century writers such as T. H. Huxley and John Tyndall are the effects of a 'Darwinian revolution' unleashed in 1859 on an unsuspecting world following the publication of The Origin of Species. Yet it can be misleading to view Darwin's work in isolation without locating it in the context of a well established and vigorous debate concerning scientific naturalism. Throughout the nineteenth century intellectuals and societies had been discussing the relationship between nature and man and the scientific and religious implications thereof. At the forefront of these debates were the advocates of phrenology who sought to apply their theories to a wide range of subjects from medicine and the treatment of the insane to education theology and even economic theories. Showing how ideas about naturalism and the doctrine of natural laws were born in the early phrenology controversies in the 1820s this book charts the spread of such views. It argues that one book in particular The Constitution of Man in Relation to External Objects (1828) by George Combe had an enormous influence on scientific thinking and the popularity of the 'naturalistic movement'. The Constitution was one of the best-selling books of the nineteenth century being published continuously from 1828 to 1899 and selling more than 350 000 copies throughout the world many times more than Dawin's The Origin of Species. By restoring Combe and his work to centre stage it provides modern scholars with a more accurate picture of the Victorians' view of their place in Nature.

American Theology Superhero Comics and Cinema The Marvel of Stan Lee and the Revolution of a Genre

American Theology Superhero Comics and Cinema The Marvel of Stan Lee and the Revolution of a Genre

Stan Lee who was the head writer of Marvel Comics in the early 1960s co-created such popular heroes as Spider-Man Hulk the X-Men the Fantastic Four Iron Man Thor and Daredevil. This book traces the ways in which American theologians and comic books of the era were not only both saying things about what it means to be human but starting with Lee they were largely saying the same things. Author Anthony R. Mills argues that the shift away from individualistic ideas of human personhood and toward relational conceptions occurring within both American theology and American superhero comics and films does not occur simply on the ontological level but is also inherent to epistemology and ethics reflecting the comprehensive nature of human life in terms of being knowing and acting. This book explores the idea of the American monomyth that pervades American hero stories and examines its philosophical and theological origins and specific manifestations in early American superhero comics. Surveying the anthropologies of six American theologians who argue against many of the monomyth’s assumptions principally the staunch individualism taken to be the model of humanity and who offer relationality as a more realistic and ethical alternative this book offers a detailed argument for the intimate historical relationship between the now disparate fields of comic book/superhero film creation on the one hand and Christian theology on the other in the United States. An understanding of the early connections between theology and American conceptions of heroism helps to further make sense of their contemporary parallels wherein superhero stories and theology are not strictly separate phenomena but have shared origins and concerns. | American Theology Superhero Comics and Cinema The Marvel of Stan Lee and the Revolution of a Genre

Urban Redevelopment A North American Reader

Urban Redevelopment A North American Reader

Urban redevelopment plays a major part in the growth strategy of the modern city and the goal of this book is to examine the various aspects of redevelopment its principles and practices in the North American context. Urban Redevelopment: A North American Reader seeks to shed light on the practice by looking at both its failures and successes ideas that seemed to work in specific circumstances but not in others. The book aims to provide guidance to academics practitioners and professionals on how when where and why specific approaches worked and when they didn’t. While one has to deal with each case specifically it is the interactions that are key. The contributors offer insight into how urban design affects behavior how finance drives architectural choices how social equity interacts with economic development how demographical diversity drives cities’ growth how politics determine land use decisions how management deals with market choices and how there are multiple influences and impacts of every decision. The book moves from the history of urban redevelopment The City Beautiful movement grand concourses and plazas through urban renewal superblocks and downtown pedestrian malls to today’s place-making: transit-oriented design street quieting new urbanism publicly accessible softer waterfront design funky small urban spaces and public-private megaprojects. This history also moves from grand masters such as Baron Haussmann and Robert Moses through community participation to stakeholder involvement to creative local leadership. The increased importance of sustainability high-energy performance resilience and both pre- and post-catastrophe planning are also discussed in detail. Cities are acts of man not nature; every street and building represents decisions made by people. Many of today’s best recognized urban theorists look for great forces; economic trends technological shifts political movements and try to analyze how they impact cities. One does not have to be a subscriber to the great man theory of history to see that in urban redevelopment successful project champions use or sometimes overcome overall trends using the tools and resources available to rebuild their community. This book is about how these projects are brought together each somewhat differently by the people who make them happen. | Urban Redevelopment A North American Reader

Max Klinger and Wilhelmine Culture On the Threshold of German Modernism

Max Klinger and Wilhelmine Culture On the Threshold of German Modernism

The Wilhelmine Empire’s opening decades (1870s - 1880s) were crucial transitional years in the development of German modernism both politically and culturally. Here Marsha Morton argues that no artist represented the shift from tradition to unsettling innovation more compellingly than Max Klinger. The author examines Klinger’s early prints and drawings within the context of intellectual and material transformations in Wilhelmine society through an interdisciplinary approach that encompasses Darwinism ethnography dreams and hypnosis the literary Romantic grotesque criminology and the urban experience. His work in advance of Expressionism revealed the psychological and biological underpinnings of modern rational man whose drives and passions undermined bourgeois constructions of material progress social stability and class status at a time when Germans were engaged in defining themselves following unification. This book is the first full-length study of Klinger in English and the first to consistently address his art using methodologies adopted from cultural history. With an emphasis on the popular illustrated media Morton draws upon information from reviews and early books on the artist writings by Klinger and his colleagues and unpublished archival sources. The book is intended for an academic readership interested in European art history social science literature and cultural studies. | Max Klinger and Wilhelmine Culture On the Threshold of German Modernism

Music Festivals and the Politics of Participation

Music Festivals and the Politics of Participation

The spread of UK music festivals has exploded since 2000. In this major contribution to cultural studies the lid is lifted on the contemporary festival scene. Gone are the days of a handful of formulaic large events dominating the market place. Across the country hundreds of ’boutique’ gatherings have popped up drawing hundreds of thousands of festival-goers into the fields. Why has this happened? What has led to this change? In her richly detailed study industry insider Dr Roxy Robinson uncovers the dynamics that have led to the formation and evolution of the modern festival scene. Tracing the history of the culture as far back as the fifties this book examines the tensions between authenticity and commerce as festivals grew into a widespread professionalized industry. Setting the scene as a fragmented yet highly competitive market Music Festivals and the Politics of Participation examines the emergence of key trends with a focus on surrealist production and popular theatricality. For the first time the transatlantic relationship between British promoters and the social experiment-come-festival Burning Man is documented uncovering its role in promoting a politics of participation that has dramatically altered the festival experience. Taking an in-depth approach to examining key events including the fastest growing independent music festival in recent years (Hampshire’s BoomTown Fair) the UK market is shown to have produced a scene that champions co-production and the democratization of festival space. This is a vital text for anyone interested in British culture.

Soulmates Resurrecting Eve

Soulmates Resurrecting Eve

In Soulmates: Resurrecting Eve Juliana Geran Pilon argues for a return to an egalitarian view of men and women found in the original Genesis narrative as reflected through Judaism Christianity and Islam. In each of these Abrahamic traditions it was understood that man and woman were created to be soulmates in God's image equal despite their different functions within society. Pilon writes that this original message has gradually been distorted with disastrous effect. Any hope for an ennobling human community begins by resurrecting Eve as an equal partner to Adam. The work examines the Biblical creation narrative comparing it to Greek and other ancient mythologies. Pilon explains how the disturbing association of woman with sin and death led to Eve's demise as Adam's equal. The final section of the work deals with the Goddess myth love and marriage in early religious narratives and modern man's search for his soul no less than for a soulmate. The book at its core is a meditation on the relationship between men and women but also among human beings. The resurrection of Eve is indispensable to attaining a true appreciation of love and faith. Pilon uses religious texts expert commentary and various works of fiction poetry and psychology to make her argument come alive. The work is strengthened by the writing style alternately poetic and humorous and a clear and illuminating progression of ideas. Its emphasis on reconciliation and understanding and its post-feminist outlook will find a receptive audience. | Soulmates Resurrecting Eve

Five Naval Journals 1789-1817

Five Naval Journals 1789-1817

These documents were selected by Rear-Admiral Thursfield for the light they throw on life afloat in the Navy of the Napoleonic era rather than for their contribution to the history of the operations in which their authors took part. They comprise four ‘Journals’ based mainly on dairies kept at the time and written up at a later date for enjoyment by the author’s friends and family. The fifth document is not a journal at all but the Order Book of a frigate captain. In addition eleven letters are included written by men from the lower deck. Each journal is headed by an Introduction which puts it in its historical context. The journal of the Rev Edward Mangin is a lively record of life aboard a 74-gun battleship in 1812 written by a clergyman who was deeply shocked by the events and deaths he witnessed. Four of the paintings he made on the Gloucester are reproduced. Peter Cullen’s journal covers the period 1789-1802 starting from the time he joined the Navy as an assistant surgeon. He gives a long account of the mutiny at the Nore and was present at Nelson’s battle at Copenhagen. Robert Wilson was a pressed man an able seaman promoted to be signalman on the smart frigate Unité from 1805 to 1809. His journal is packed with details of the many varied duties she undertook in the Mediterranean in the post-Trafalgar period and how these affected her officers and crew. Charles Abbot was a midshipman on the Alceste when she carried Lord Amherst to China as ambassador in 1816 and sank off Borneo on her return voyage. | Five Naval Journals 1789-1817
