Topiary Cat (Ligustrum Jonandrum)

Topiary Cat (Ligustrum Jonandrum)

This stunning topiary is made from clipped Ligustrum Jonandrum. The Privet, also known as the Ligustrum, starts its tale from Asia, eventually extending into Australia and Europe. The actual plant is used as a street tree in Europe and has an interesting history in that it became very popular as a street ornament in Britain during WWII when the government started to requisition post-1850 iron gates and railings to be turned into ammunition for the war effort. The plant itself is semi-evergreen and is a very bushy shrub although this variant grows into a lovely lollipop shape hence its other name, ‘Lollipop Privet’. It produces abundant creamy white flowers with a rather unusual scent in late summer and small, black berries in autumn. It needs regular watering three times a week. The Hardiness rating is H6, meaning that it is perfect for the UK climate. Privet grows rapidly and needs clipping every two to three weeks in the summer months. Growth slows down and stops in September, after which the shrub will retain its shape until next spring. All parts of the plant are toxic and may cause severe discomfort if eaten. The soil needs to be well drained and a full sun or partial shade is recommended. Latin Name: Ligustrum Jonandrum English Name: Privet, Lollipop Privet Species: Jonandrum Genus: Ligustrum Foliage Type: Semi-Evergreen Foliage: Green Flower: Green with white flowers Flowering Period: June-July Suggested Location: Outdoor. Suggested Soil Type: Well-Drained. Suggested Exposure to Sunlight: Full sun or Partial shade Suggested Exposure to Weather: Sheltered or Exposed. Ilex Aquifolium (English Holly) - Cone

Ilex Aquifolium (English Holly) - Cone

Common English Holly is a medium-sized evergreen tree, which grows slowly when young, but speeds up a little as it matures. Its dark, glossy green, wave-shaped leaves are edged with spines and are a popular decoration at Christmas when combined with its seasonal red berries. Resilient against even the most extreme British weather, they bring rich colours to your garden throughout the year. Ilex Aquifolium (English Holly) is an ideal topiary plant because of its slow growth and low maintenance requirements. Ilex Aquifolium is a hardy shrub that can grow almost anywhere except in extremely wet conditions. Common English holly, Ilex aquifolium, is the most popular holly species grown in British gardens and is widely used for decorations at Christmas. Holly is dioecious, which means there are separate male and female plants. The white flowers which appear in May are pollinated by insects and berries appear on female plants by late November. Holly berries are a good winter food source for birds. However, holly berries are mildly toxic to humans, causing vomiting and diarrhoea if eaten. Variegated Holly Olive (Osmanthus Heterophyllus Variegatus) - Shrub

Variegated Holly Olive (Osmanthus Heterophyllus Variegatus) - Shrub

A slow-growing shrub with dark green leaves that are edged with cream and have a similar shape to holly. Variegated Holly Olive is doubly-deceitful, not only is it a "false holly" (as it belongs to the Oleaceae "olive" family), but the black berries it produces are a long way from the tasty olives you'll find at the supermarket! The leaves of Variegated Holly Olive are smaller than those of genuine holly bushes, but they are just as prickly. This makes them a great choice for creating bright and colourful hedges and borders that will keep out unwanted animals like the neighbourhood cat. All of our Hedging Plants allow you to style your garden in a range of different ways, not just because of their varied colours, but also because of the way you choose to trim and maintain them. Prune them regularly to achieve a neat, clean form, or let them bush-out a little to create a more natural appearance. Whether you're using a hedge to give your garden some privacy, or as protection from the weather, road and noise pollution, you'll want to choose a plant that complements the rest of your garden's visual appearance. Cordyline Australis (New Zealand Cabbage Tree) - Single Trunk

Cordyline Australis (New Zealand Cabbage Tree) - Single Trunk

Cordyline Australis is a widely branched monocot tree commonly known as the Torbay Palm or Cabbage Tree. Torbay Palm is a popular choice for coastal and urban gardens in the warmer parts of Britain because it gradually sheds the older leaves giving it an exotic palm-like appearance. Young cordylines are often used in bedding and container displays and make good house or conservatory plants. Numerous cultivars are available with attractive foliage in shades of green, bronze, purple. They naturally hybridise among themselves and with related species like Cordyline indivisa. Mature specimens of Cordyline australis will flower in summer and produce white fruit clusters in autumn that are a good food source for birds. The plant though is not very hardy at only H3 so make sure to shelter during the winter time. No pruning is required for this plant.
