Ilex Aquifolium (English Holly) - Cone

Ilex Aquifolium (English Holly) - Cone

Common English Holly is a medium-sized evergreen tree, which grows slowly when young, but speeds up a little as it matures. Its dark, glossy green, wave-shaped leaves are edged with spines and are a popular decoration at Christmas when combined with its seasonal red berries. Resilient against even the most extreme British weather, they bring rich colours to your garden throughout the year. Ilex Aquifolium (English Holly) is an ideal topiary plant because of its slow growth and low maintenance requirements. Ilex Aquifolium is a hardy shrub that can grow almost anywhere except in extremely wet conditions. Common English holly, Ilex aquifolium, is the most popular holly species grown in British gardens and is widely used for decorations at Christmas. Holly is dioecious, which means there are separate male and female plants. The white flowers which appear in May are pollinated by insects and berries appear on female plants by late November. Holly berries are a good winter food source for birds. However, holly berries are mildly toxic to humans, causing vomiting and diarrhoea if eaten. Variegated Holly Olive (Osmanthus Heterophyllus Variegatus) - Shrub

Variegated Holly Olive (Osmanthus Heterophyllus Variegatus) - Shrub

A slow-growing shrub with dark green leaves that are edged with cream and have a similar shape to holly. Variegated Holly Olive is doubly-deceitful, not only is it a "false holly" (as it belongs to the Oleaceae "olive" family), but the black berries it produces are a long way from the tasty olives you'll find at the supermarket! The leaves of Variegated Holly Olive are smaller than those of genuine holly bushes, but they are just as prickly. This makes them a great choice for creating bright and colourful hedges and borders that will keep out unwanted animals like the neighbourhood cat. All of our Hedging Plants allow you to style your garden in a range of different ways, not just because of their varied colours, but also because of the way you choose to trim and maintain them. Prune them regularly to achieve a neat, clean form, or let them bush-out a little to create a more natural appearance. Whether you're using a hedge to give your garden some privacy, or as protection from the weather, road and noise pollution, you'll want to choose a plant that complements the rest of your garden's visual appearance. All of our Hedging Plants have evergreen foliage – giving you some pleasant greenery to look at all-year-round. Latin Name: Osmanthus Heterophyllus Variegatus English Name: Variegated Holly Olive, Variegated Holly Osmanthus, Variegated Osmanthus Holly Species: Oleaceae Genus: Osmanthus Foliage Type: Evergreen. Osmanthus Heterophyllus Tricolor (Holly Osmanthus) - Shrub

Osmanthus Heterophyllus Tricolor (Holly Osmanthus) - Shrub

A slow-growing shrub with colourfully patterned leaves that are a similar shape to holly. The leaves of Holly Osmanthus are pinkish bronze when they first sprout, they quickly turn to a creamy vanilla within a few weeks, before finally adding green into the mix to produce a "marbled" effect in the summer. The more sun the plant receives, the more noticeable this marbling effect will be. Like other evergreen plants, it can maintain those mature leaves into the next year, allowing them to mix with new pinky-bronze growth. All of our Hedging Plants allow you to style your garden in a range of different ways, not just because of their varied colours, but also because of the way you choose to trim and maintain them. Prune them regularly to achieve a neat, clean form, or let them bush-out a little to create a more natural appearance. Ilex Aquifolium 'Argenteomarginata' (Variegated English Holly) - Shrub

Dark green leaves edged with cream make this a brighter alternative to Common English Holly. Silver Holly has less of a Christmassy-feel than the Common English Holly available elsewhere on GardenPlantsOnline, thanks mostly to its colourful, variegated leaves. Photinia Serrulata Red Robin (Christmas Berry) - Shrub - Multi Buy

Photinia Serrulata Red Robin (Christmas Berry) - Shrub - Multi Buy

An evergreen shrub with bright red leaves that become a glossy green colour as they mature. A Christmas Berry Red Robin hedge puts on a show all year round, with white springtime flowers and new leaves that start out as a vibrant red, before darkening to a glossy green as they age. These bright colours are popular with wildlife, but due to its loose branch structure, birds are unlikely to choose the Red Robin as a nesting location (which is ironic). With a high final height of up-to 400cm, Christmas Berry Red Robins are an excellent choice for creating interesting hedges and borders. Bambusa Phyllostachys Bissetii (Bisset Bamboo) – Espalier

Bambusa Phyllostachys Bissetii (Bisset Bamboo) – Espalier

The Bisetti bamboo will be first to produce new growth – which is edible – each year. The mainly upright, though slightly arching canes, glossy-green, sometimes with a purple tinge, and yellowish green when older, are of the clump-forming variety with deep green leaves that will withstand bad weather and can form a very dense canopy – don’t expect much light to reach the ground under this plant. Great on its own, in large containers or as a very effective privacy screen. Bamboos must not dry out, they must be watered well during the first growing season, if grown in containers they need plenty of room and they will always need water during dry weather. Average growth. The deep-green canes reach diameters of between 2.5 and 3 cm. The leaves, which are also a beautiful green, are narrow and lanceolate and measure between 12 cm and 15 cm in length. This is a very particular species for its high resistance to cold ( -25 °C). Miscanthus Sinensis 'Dixieland' (Eulalia 'Dixieland')

Miscanthus Sinensis 'Dixieland' (Eulalia 'Dixieland')

Similar to the Miscanthus Sinensis Cabaret, but with multiple white stripes instead of just one. The Dixieland’s leaves have more variety than the Cabaret’s – whose single stripes appear in a very uniform way. The Dixieland’s white streaks appear in different numbers and thicknesses – giving every leaf a unique pattern. Both have very similar pink flowers. Ornamental Grasses are chosen for their decorative qualities and whether used indoors or outdoors, they can bring a striking diversity to your garden. From round shrubs to tall walls of quivering spikes, ornamental grasses bring new shapes and textures that will contrast against the twisted roots of trees and the blooms of traditional plants and flowers. They are also becoming increasingly popular due to their hardiness against the British weather and their ability to hold their colour through autumn and winter. Latin Name: Miscanthus Sinensis Dixieland English Name: Dixieland, Eulalia Dixieland Species: Poaceae Genus: Miscanthus Foliage Type: Deciduous. Foliage: Green and White. Flower: Pink to Silver. Miscanthus Sinensis Variegatus (Japanese Silver Grass)

Miscanthus Sinensis Variegatus (Japanese Silver Grass)

Sister to the Miscanthus Sinensis Dixieland, but with slightly redder flowers and pale green leaves. The Variegatus’s leaves are patterned with white vertical streaks that vary in thickness and number. What differentiates it from the Dixieland is the paleness of the green pigment in its leaves – giving the whole plant a lighter, more subdued appearance. The Variegatus can also grow to a taller height than its sister, maxing-out at around 225cm. It is very easy to maintain and requires little pruning - a couple of trims each year if necessary in April or mid-July will keep it in shape.
