When Cats Reigned Like Kings On the Trail of the Sacred Cats

When Cats Reigned Like Kings On the Trail of the Sacred Cats

In her fascinating exploration of feline history Georgie Anne Geyer explores the connections between the royal and sacred felines of ancient civilizations and the beloved domestic cats of today. Chasing an irresistible mystery across the globe Geyer conducts exhaustive research into the little-known puzzle of how cats came to occupy their unique position in the lives of humans. Treated with the tenacity resourcefulness and narrative instinct of a seasoned foreign correspondent the investigation yields unexpected answers and poses tantalizing new questions. It was Geyer's curiosity about her own cats that inspired her to study the history of human-feline relations and especially the exalted status of cats among the ancients as royal or sacred beings. In Egypt Geyer learned of the cat-goddess Bastet and of the cat's role in the transmigration of souls. In Myanmar she saw Leonardo DiCaprio Ricky Martin and the other incongruously named cats of the Nga Phe Kyaung monastery trained by the monks to jump through hoops. She even met a family who dutifully guards the heritage of the Japanese Bobtail cultivating the line in of all places rural Virginia. Richly illustrated with photographs of Geyer's journeys and historical cat images When Cats Reigned Like Kings describes forty-one recognized modern cat breeds plus other popular cats. Every cat lover can thus trace his or her cat to these breeds and their many relatives. The result is a remarkable book bound to delight and amaze cat fanciers and adventure seekers. | When Cats Reigned Like Kings On the Trail of the Sacred Cats

Grothendieck Construction of Bipermutative-Indexed Categories

Grothendieck Construction of Bipermutative-Indexed Categories

The Grothendieck construction provides an explicit link between indexed categories and opfibrations. It is a fundamental concept in category theory and related fields with far-reaching applications. Bipermutative categories are categorifications of rings. They play a central role in algebraic K-theory and infinite loop space theory. This monograph is a detailed study of the Grothendieck construction over a bipermutative category in the context of categorically enriched multicategories with new and important applications to inverse K-theory and pseudo symmetric E∞-algebras. After carefully recalling preliminaries in enriched categories bipermutative categories and enriched multicategories we show that the Grothendieck construction over a small tight bipermutative category is a pseudo symmetric Cat-multifunctor and generally not a Cat-multifunctor in the symmetric sense. Pseudo symmetry of Cat-multifunctors is a new concept we introduce in this work. The following features make it accessible as a graduate text or reference for experts: Complete definitions and proofs Self-contained background. Parts of Chapters 1–3 7 9 and 10 contain background material from the research literature Extensive cross-references Connections between chapters. Each chapter has its own introduction discussing not only the topics of that chapter but also its connection with other chapters Open questions. Appendix A contains open questions that arise from the material in the text and are suitable for graduate students This book is suitable for graduate students and researchers with an interest in category theory algebraic K-theory homotopy theory and related fields. The presentation is thorough and self-contained with complete details and background material for non-expert readers. | Grothendieck Construction of Bipermutative-Indexed Categories

Using Technologies for Creative-Text Translation

Using Technologies for Creative-Text Translation

This collection reflects on the state of the art of research into the use of translation technologies in the translation of creative texts encompassing literary texts but also extending beyond to cultural texts and charts their development and paths for further research. Bringing together perspectives from scholars across the discipline the book considers recent trends and developments in technology that have spurred growing interest in the use of computer-aided translation (CAT) and machine translation (MT) tools in literary translation. Chapters examine the relationships between translators and these tools—the extent to which they already use such technologies the challenges they face and prevailing attitudes towards these tools—as well as the ethical implications of such technologies in translation practice. The volume gives special focus to drawing on examples with and beyond traditional literary genres to look to these technologies’ use in working with the larger group of creative texts setting the stage for many future research opportunities. The book will be of particular interest to students and scholars in translation studies especially those with an interest in literary translation translation technology translation practice and translation ethics. Chapters 2 & 3 of this book are freely available as a downloadable Open Access PDF under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives 4. 0 license available at http://www. taylorfrancis. com | Using Technologies for Creative-Text Translation

A reflection of York's obsession with time and its measurement the book discusses the mind-bending universe of the special and general theories of relativity the ghostly world of quantum mechanics and the unpredictable haunts of chaos. It explores the pyramids of Egypt Stonehenge and the South China plain; the universities of Cambridge McGill and Chicago; the Patent Office in Berne; and back to the Ethiopian desert on the banks of the Awash River. Companions to share and illuminate the path range from Jonathan Swift's Gulliver's Travels and Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland to J. B. Priestley's Dangerous Corner. It also presents the father of master-spy Kim Philby in the Empty Quarter of Arabia the fantasist Velikovsky in the clouds and Newton Darwin Rutherford Einstein and the great Earth scientists of this century who fathomed the depths of lost time and discovered the age of the Earth.
