The Migration of Professional Women from Nigeria to the UK Narratives of Work Family Life and Adaptation

The Migration of Professional Women from Nigeria to the UK Narratives of Work Family Life and Adaptation

Based on interviews with women who were professionals in different fields in Nigeria prior to migrating The Migration of Professional Women from Nigeria to the UK examines the ways in which professional middle-class women make sense of their lived experiences their roles in migration decision-making and their experiences of adaptation in the UK. Drawing on the thought of Mead on the symbolic reconstruction of the past from the standpoint of the present and employing a feminist approach to qualitative research the book considers the reflexive construction of women’s narratives concerning their lived experiences in Nigeria and sheds light on their decisions to migrate. Using intersectionality and critiquing the concept of Strong Black Woman the author analyses participants’ narratives of integration adaptation and work and family life in the UK. Rejecting the notion of culture shock as a means of explaining immigrants' early experiences the use of a person-by-situation approach is proposed to accommodate the nuances of individual narratives. A rich theoretically informed study of the narratives of skilled migrants whose experiences are often subsumed into studies of African migration more broadly this volume will appeal to scholars of sociology anthropology and cultural geography with interests in migration gender and the sociology of work and family life. | The Migration of Professional Women from Nigeria to the UK Narratives of Work Family Life and Adaptation

Representing Schizophrenia in the Media A Corpus-Based Approach to UK Press Coverage

Representing Schizophrenia in the Media A Corpus-Based Approach to UK Press Coverage

This book presents a critical analysis of ways in which schizophrenia and people with schizophrenia are represented in the press. Interrogating a 15-million-word corpus of news articles published by nine UK national newspapers over a 15-year period the author draws on techniques from corpus linguistics and critical discourse analysis to identify the most frequent and salient linguistic features used by journalists to influence and reflect broader public attitudes towards people with schizophrenia. In doing so this book: Evaluates the extent to which media representations are accurate and the extent to which they are potentially helpful or harmful towards people living with schizophrenia; Employs a bottom-up approach guided by linguistic patterns such as collocates and keywords identified by corpus software; Contributes to the de-stigmatisation of schizophrenic disorder by unveiling some of the widespread misconceptions surrounding it; Applies a mixed-methods approach in order to expose attitudes and beliefs found ‘between the lines’ – values and assumptions which are often implicit in the way language is used and therefore not visible to the naked eye. The findings of this monograph will be relevant to advanced students and researchers of health communication corpus linguistics and applied linguistics and will also carry importance for journalists and mental health practitioners. | Representing Schizophrenia in the Media A Corpus-Based Approach to UK Press Coverage

Brexit and Energy Law Implications and Opportunities

Brexit and Energy Law Implications and Opportunities

Bringing together leading experts from across the UK and Europe this book provides a comprehensive analysis of the impact of Brexit on the energy sector in the UK and in the European Union and its Member States. In recent decades the trend within the EU has been towards greater integration and liberalisation of energy markets. Through the development of the Union’s internal energy market and the funding of cross-border energy infrastructure EU membership facilitates cross-border trade in energy promotes security of energy supply and via the European Atomic Energy Community (Euratom) allows EU Member States to trade in nuclear material for energy production. Brexit changes all of this. The significant level of integration and interdependence in EU energy policy means that the UK’s departure from the Union poses many challenges for the UK the EU and EU Member States. While certain energy-related arrangements have been addressed the relationship between the UK and EU in the energy sector has been changed fundamentally. In this context important and interrelated questions arise such as the following: Under what terms will energy trading between the EU and UK now take place? What access will the UK have to EU energy markets? What does Brexit mean for the security of energy supply? What does the UK’s departure from Euratom mean for nuclear research? Can the crossborder single energy market (SEM) on the island of Ireland continue following Brexit? What implications does Brexit have for renewables the environment and climate change? Brexit comes at a time when the European energy sector is undergoing the processes of decarbonisation and energy transition. This book offers researchers legal practitioners and policy advisers in-depth understanding of the interplay between these challenges and Brexit. | Brexit and Energy Law Implications and Opportunities

Institutionalised Dissent The Official Opposition in the UK since 1935

Institutionalised Dissent The Official Opposition in the UK since 1935

This book provides a comprehensive analysis of a peculiar but now firmly established British institution— the Official Opposition— tracking its development since 1935. Despite its inherent importance to the conduct of politics and government the Official Opposition as an institution remains poorly understood. The concept of ‘Loyal Opposition’ has become so entrenched in the Westminster parliamentary model that it is now taken for granted that the principal challengers to the government of the day are given significant official recognition by the state. Political dissent has become institutionalised and legitimised. Using previously unpublished archive material and candid interviews with former Leaders of the Opposition and their staff the book examines the constraints and dilemmas facing the Official Opposition. Detailing the way successive opposition leaders have organised their staff and Shadow Cabinets it highlights the practical difficulties they face in holding the government to account and preparing for government. The study concludes by arguing that the role of the Official Opposition is vital but ill- defined that the inadequacy of its resources has impacted on its effectiveness and that there are potentially serious challenges to it as a model. The book will be of key interest to scholars of British politics British history parliamentary and legislative studies and government and democracy more generally. | Institutionalised Dissent The Official Opposition in the UK since 1935
