Optimization of Biological Sulphate Reduction to Treat Inorganic Wastewaters Process Control and Potential Use of Methane as Electron Donor

Optimization of Biological Sulphate Reduction to Treat Inorganic Wastewaters Process Control and Potential Use of Methane as Electron Donor

This work investigated two different approaches to optimize biological sulphate reduction in order to develop a process control strategy to optimize the input of an electron donor and to study how to increase the feasibility of using a cheap carbon source. Feast/famine regimes applied to design the control strategy were shown to induce the accumulation of storage compounds in the sulphate reducing biomass. This study showed that delays in the response time and a high control gain can be considered as the most critical factors affecting a sulphide control strategy in bioreactors. The delays are caused by the induction of different metabolic pathways in the anaerobic sludge including the accumulation of storage products. On this basis a mathematical model was developed and validated. This can be used to develop optimal control strategies. In order to understand the microbial pathways in the anaerobic oxidation of methane coupled to sulphate reduction (AOM-SR) diverse potential electron donors and acceptors were added to in vitro incubations of an AOM-SR enrichment at high pressure. Acetate was formed in the control group probably resulting from the reduction of CO2. These results support the hypothesis that acetate may serve as an intermediate in the AOM-SR process. | Optimization of Biological Sulphate Reduction to Treat Inorganic Wastewaters Process Control and Potential Use of Methane as Electron Donor

Historical Performance and New Music Aesthetics and Practices

Historical Performance and New Music Aesthetics and Practices

The worlds of new music and historically informed performance might seem quite distant from one another. Yet upon closer consideration clear points of convergence emerge. Not only do many contemporary performers move easily between these two worlds but they often do so using a shared ethos of flexibility improvisation curiosity and collaboration—collaboration with composers past and present with other performers and with audiences. Bringing together expert scholars and performers considering a wide range of issues and case studies Historical Performance and New Music—the first book of its kind—addresses the synergies in aesthetics and practices in historical performance and new music. The essays treat matters including technologies and media such as laptops printing presses and graphic notation; new music written for period instruments from natural horns to the clavichord; personalities such as the pioneering singer Cathy Berberian; the musically “omnivorous” ensembles A Far Cry and Roomful of Teeth; and composers Luciano Berio David Lang Molly Herron Caroline Shaw and many others. Historical Performance and New Music presents pathbreaking ideas in an accessible style that speaks to performers composers scholars and music lovers alike. International Conflict and Conflict Management

International Conflict and Conflict Management

This book asks scholars to reexamine international conflict and its management—in order to move the field toward directly theorizing about and examining the interdependence between conflict events and conflict management attempts. Despite decades of work research on international conflict and its management remains siloed in three fundamental ways. First scholars do not thoroughly address international conflict dynamics within studies of conflict management even though the former give rise to the latter. Second existing work generally investigates one conflict management strategy (e. g. mediation) at the expense of others (e. g. adjudication). These strategies however are not independent of one another; they exist on a single menu from which potential third parties choose. Third parties therefore implicitly—if not explicitly—consider and select among the various strategies when deciding how to manage a conflict thereby inviting and incorporating comparisons. Finally researchers tend to treat conflict management efforts—even within the same conflict—as independent events even though some efforts (e. g. adjudication or arbitration) follow and explicitly relate to other earlier efforts (e. g. an earlier negotiation or mediation). In short elements of sequencing and interaction influence conflict management even as scholars rarely consider such elements. This book will be of great value to scholars and researchers of Political Science International Relations and Conflict Management and Resolution. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of International Interactions. | International Conflict and Conflict Management

Notes from the Margins The Gay Analyst's Subjectivity in the Treatment Setting

Notes from the Margins The Gay Analyst's Subjectivity in the Treatment Setting

Much has been written about the impact of gender and sexual orientation on the intersubjective field. Yet remarkably little has been written about the unique dilemmas faced by gay clinicians who treat patients of different genders and sexual orientations. Given the particularities of growing up gay in our culture issues of secrecy shame alienation difference and internalized homophobia necessarily enter into any gay therapist's developmental history. These factors have a shaping impact on the gay analyst's sensibility on the way he learns to listen to his patients. In Notes from the Margins Eric Sherman courageously reveals a wide range of subjective reactions to eight different patients. In detailed clinical vignettes that highlight his thoughts feelings personal history and countertransference struggles he conveys the experiential immediacy of working as an analyst-and more specifically as a gay analyst. Although Sherman is not the first author to write thoughtfully about working in the countertransference he is among the very few to portray analytic work particularly in the working through of enactments as an often untidy affair marked not only by success but also by the blind spots and insecurities that contribute to failure. Notes from the Margins is not only an illuminating overview of the special challenges faced by gay and lesbian analysts but a window to grasping the messy realities intrinsic to the psychotherapeutic process. | Notes from the Margins The Gay Analyst's Subjectivity in the Treatment Setting

Photography and Making Bedouin Histories in the Naqab 1906-2013 An Anthropological Approach

Photography and Making Bedouin Histories in the Naqab 1906-2013 An Anthropological Approach

Introducing a novel anthropological study of photography in the Middle East Emilie Le Febvre takes us to the Naqab Desert where Bedouin use photographs to make and respond to their own histories. She argues Bedouin presentations of the past are selective but increasingly reliant on archival documents such as photographs which spokespersons treat as evidence of their local histories amid escalating tensions in Israel. These practices shape Bedouin visual historicity that is the diverse ways people produce their pasts in the present with images. This book charts these processes through the afterlives of six photographs (c. 1906–2013) as they circulate between the Naqab’s entangled visual economies – a transregional landscape organised by cultural ideals of proximity and assemblages of Bedouin iconography. Le Febvre illustrates how representational contentions associated with tribal civic and Palestinian-Israeli politics influence how images do history work in this society. She concludes Bedouin visual historicity is defined by acts of persuasion during which photographs authenticate alternating history projects. Here Bedouin value photographs not because they evidence singular narratives of the past. Rather the knowledges inscribed by photography are multifarious as they support diverse constructions of history and society with which members mediate a wide range of relationships in southern Israel. This book bridges studies of anthropology photography Palestinian-Israeli politics and Bedouin Middle East history. | Photography and Making Bedouin Histories in the Naqab 1906-2013 An Anthropological Approach

Statistical Thermodynamics Of Surfaces Interfaces And Membranes

Statistical Thermodynamics Of Surfaces Interfaces And Membranes

Understanding the structural and thermodynamic properties of surfaces interfaces and membranes is important for both fundamental and practical reasons. Important applications include coatings dispersants encapsulating agents and biological materials. Soft materials important in the development of new materials and the basis of many biological systems cannot be designed using trial and error methods due to the multiplicity of components and parameters. While these systems can sometimes be analyzed in terms of microscopic mixtures it is often conceptually simpler to regard them as dispersions and to focus on the properties of the internal interfaces found in these systems. The basic physics centers on the properties of quasi-two-dimensional systems embedded in the three-dimensional world thus exhibiting phenomena that do not exist in bulk materials. This approach is the basis behind the theoretical presentation of Statistical Thermodynamics of Surfaces Interfaces and Membranes. The approach adapted allows one to treat the rich diversity of phenomena investigated in the field of soft matter physics (including both colloid/interface science as well as the materials and macromolecular aspects of biological physics) such as interfacial tension the roughening transition wetting interactions between surfaces membrane elasticity and self-assembly. Presented as a set of lecture notes this book is aimed at physicists physical chemists biological physicists chemical engineers and materials scientists who are interested in the statistical mechanics that underlie the macroscopic thermodynamic properties of surfaces interfaces and membranes. This paperback edition contains all the material published in the original hard-cover edition as well as additional clarifications and explanations.
