Bayesian Nonparametrics for Causal Inference and Missing Data

Bayesian Nonparametrics for Causal Inference and Missing Data

Bayesian Nonparametrics for Causal Inference and Missing Data provides an overview of flexible Bayesian nonparametric (BNP) methods for modeling joint or conditional distributions and functional relationships and their interplay with causal inference and missing data. This book emphasizes the importance of making untestable assumptions to identify estimands of interest such as missing at random assumption for missing data and unconfoundedness for causal inference in observational studies. Unlike parametric methods the BNP approach can account for possible violations of assumptions and minimize concerns about model misspecification. The overall strategy is to first specify BNP models for observed data and then to specify additional uncheckable assumptions to identify estimands of interest. The book is divided into three parts. Part I develops the key concepts in causal inference and missing data and reviews relevant concepts in Bayesian inference. Part II introduces the fundamental BNP tools required to address causal inference and missing data problems. Part III shows how the BNP approach can be applied in a variety of case studies. The datasets in the case studies come from electronic health records data survey data cohort studies and randomized clinical trials. Features • Thorough discussion of both BNP and its interplay with causal inference and missing data • How to use BNP and g-computation for causal inference and non-ignorable missingness • How to derive and calibrate sensitivity parameters to assess sensitivity to deviations from uncheckable causal and/or missingness assumptions • Detailed case studies illustrating the application of BNP methods to causal inference and missing data • R code and/or packages to implement BNP in causal inference and missing data problems The book is primarily aimed at researchers and graduate students from statistics and biostatistics. It will also serve as a useful practical reference for mathematically sophisticated epidemiologists and medical researchers.

Design and Analysis of Pragmatic Trials

Design and Analysis of Pragmatic Trials

This book begins with an introduction of pragmatic cluster randomized trials (PCTs) and reviews various pragmatic issues that need to be addressed by statisticians at the design stage. It discusses the advantages and disadvantages of each type of PCT and provides sample size formulas sensitivity analyses and examples for sample size calculation. The generalized estimating equation (GEE) method will be employed to derive sample size formulas for various types of outcomes from the exponential family including continuous binary and count variables. Experimental designs that have been frequently employed in PCTs will be discussed including cluster randomized designs matched-pair cluster randomized design stratified cluster randomized design stepped-wedge cluster randomized design longitudinal cluster randomized design and crossover cluster randomized design. It demonstrates that the GEE approach is flexible to accommodate pragmatic issues such as hierarchical correlation structures different missing data patterns randomly varying cluster sizes etc. It has been reported that the GEE approach leads to under-estimated variance with limited numbers of clusters. The remedy for this limitation is investigated for the design of PCTs. This book can assist practitioners in the design of PCTs by providing a description of the advantages and disadvantages of various PCTs and sample size formulas that address various pragmatic issues facilitating the proper implementation of PCTs to improve health care. It can also serve as a textbook for biostatistics students at the graduate level to enhance their knowledge or skill in clinical trial design. Key Features: Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each type of PCTs and provide sample size formulas sensitivity analyses and examples. Address an unmet need for guidance books on sample size calculations for PCTs; A wide variety of experimental designs adopted by PCTs are covered; The sample size solutions can be readily implemented due to the accommodation of common pragmatic issues encountered in real-world practice; Useful to both academic and industrial biostatisticians involved in clinical trial design; Can be used as a textbook for graduate students majoring in statistics and biostatistics. | Design and Analysis of Pragmatic Trials

A Compendium of World Sovereigns: Volume I Ancient

A Compendium of World Sovereigns: Volume I Ancient

The Compendium of World Sovereigns series contains three volumes: Ancient Medieval and Early Modern. These volumes provide students with easy-to-access ‘who’s who’ with details on the identities and dates ages and wives where known of heads of government in any given state at any time within the framework of reference. The relevant original and secondary sources are also listed in a comprehensive bibliography. Providing a clear reference guide for students to who was who and when they ruled in the dynasties and other ruler-lists for the Ancient Medieval and Early Modern worlds – primarily European and Middle Eastern but including available information on Africa and Asia and the pre-Columbian Americas. The trilogy accesses and interprets the original data plus any modern controversies and disputes over names and dating reflecting on the shifts and widening of focus in student and academic studies. Each volume contains league tables of rulers’ ‘records’ and an extensive bibliographical guide to the relevant personnel and dynasties plus any controversies so readers can consult these for extra details and know exactly where to go for which information. All relevant information is collected and provided as a one-stop-shop for students wishing to check the known information about a world Sovereign. The Ancient volume begins with the Pharaohs in Egypt and moves through Greece Classical and Early Medieval Armenia Crimea Syria Jordan Israel and Judah Persia India and ends with the Roman World in the east and west. A Compendium of World Sovereigns: Volume I Ancient provides students and scholars with the perfect reference guide to support their studies and to fact check dates people and places.

Transcultural Poetics Chinese Literature in English Translation

Transcultural Poetics Chinese Literature in English Translation

This book examines many facets of transcultural poetics in the English translation of Chinese literature from 12 different expert contributors. Translating Chinese literature into English is a special challenge. There is a pressing need to overcome a slew of obstacles to the understanding and appreciation of Chinese literary works by readers in the English-speaking world. Hitherto only intermittent attempts have been made to theorize and explore the exact role of the translator as a cultural and aesthetic mediator informed by cross-cultural knowledge awareness and sensitivity. Given the complexity of literary translation sophisticated poetics of translation in terms of literary value and aesthetic taste needs to be developed and elaborated more fully from a cross-cultural perspective. It is therefore necessary to examine attempts to reconcile the desire for authentic transmission of Chinese culture with the need for cultural mediation and appropriation in terms of the production and reception of texts subject to the multiplicity of constraints in order to shed new light on the longstanding conundrum of Chinese-English literary translation by addressing Chinese literature in the multiple contexts of nationalism cross-cultural hybridity literary untranslatability the reception of translation and also world literature. The book will be of great interest to students and scholars of translation studies Chinese literature and East Asian studies. | Transcultural Poetics Chinese Literature in English Translation

Canines The Original Biosensors

Canines The Original Biosensors

Detection canines have been utilized throughout the world for over a century and while numerous attempts have been made to replicate the canine’s ability to detect substances by mechanical means none has been as successful. The olfactory system is a highly intricate and sophisticated design for chemical sensing and the olfactory capacity of many animals including canines is considered unmatched by machine due to not only their great sensitivity and superior selectivity but also their trainability and mobility. These unique features have led to the use of such animals as whole-animal biosensors. Amplifying the benefits and diminishing the limitations of detection canines' interdisciplinary research is crucial to understanding canine olfaction and detection and enhancing this powerful and complex detector. The past 50 years have produced vast advancements in animal behavior/training technology to develop canines into more proficient and reliable sensors while scientific research has provided tremendous support to help practitioners better understand how to utilize this powerful sensor. This book assembles a diverse group of authors with expertise in a variety of fields relating to detection canines and the chemical sensing industry including both research and operational perspectives on detection canines. It illustrates how science enhances our understanding of how canines are employed for solving some of the world’s leading detection challenges. | Canines The Original Biosensors
