Development and Manufacture of Yogurt and Other Functional Dairy Products

Development and Manufacture of Yogurt and Other Functional Dairy Products

While the science of yogurt is nearly as old as the origin of mankind there have been rapid changes in yogurt development since the turn of the 19th century fueled by continuing developments in biological sciences. Development and Manufacture of Yogurt and Other Functional Dairy Products presents a comprehensive review of all aspects of yogurt and other fermented dairy foods including production processing preparation regulations and health aspects. Condensing more than 12 000 pages of recently published literature expert contributors including several clinicians address the most recent developments in probiotics and the interaction between yogurt and immunological and intestinal bowel diseases. They explain how beneficial and harmful bacteria are colonized in the human intestinal system and how those bacteria can either strengthen or weaken immunological functions. This resource also explores the little-known varieties of functional dairy products – such as ayran kefir koumiss cacik and tarator – that are currently only consumed in small parts of the world but that are likely to reach supermarkets worldwide in the not-so-distant future. Development and Manufacture of Yogurt and Other Functional Dairy Products presents the most recent developments in biosciences and their applications in yogurt-human health interactions. The depth and breadth of coverage make this book an indispensable reference for those involved with the research and manufacturing of milk and dairy products.

Assertive Religion Religious Intolerance in a Multicultural World

Assertive Religion Religious Intolerance in a Multicultural World

Questions about religions and religious institutions have changed dramatically since they first arose many years ago. In the beginning of the twenty-first century the link of religion with extreme ideologies captures our attention. Such questions have been the focus of a steadily growing number of books. What does Assertive Religion add to the debate?Emanuel de Kadt discusses the relationship of religion to wider social issues such as human rights and multiculturalism. He traces the growth during the religious revival over the past decades of assertive and even coercive forms of religion notably but not exclusively fundamentalist varieties. He deals with these questions as they relate to the three major Abrahamic religions thereby addressing a readership wider than that made up of persons interested exclusively in Judaism Christianity or Islam. The author takes on issues such as the effects of the Jewishness of Israel on the rights of Palestinians; the consequences of the centralized authority structure of the Roman Catholic Church; and the implications of the failure of reform-oriented Muslims to make their voices heard in an organized Islamic reform movement. He is even-handed focusing on both positive and negative features of each religious perspective though he does have a clear viewpoint. Assertive Religion adds to increasingly sharp political discussions on issues arising out of religion. It is a must read for anyone interested in how religion is shaping the world of tomorrow. | Assertive Religion Religious Intolerance in a Multicultural World

British Nuclear Weapons and the Test Ban 1954–1973 Britain the United States Weapons Policies and Nuclear Testing: Tensions and Contradictions

British Nuclear Weapons and the Test Ban 1954–1973 Britain the United States Weapons Policies and Nuclear Testing: Tensions and Contradictions

In 1962 Dean Acheson famously described Britain as having lost an Empire but not yet found a role. Perhaps nowhere is this more apparent than in the realms of nuclear weapons. An increasingly marginal world power successive post-war British governments felt that an independent nuclear deterrent was essential if the country was to remain at the top table of world diplomacy. Focusing on a key twenty-year period this study explores Britain's role in efforts to bring about a nuclear test ban treaty between 1954 and 1973. Taking a broadly chronological approach it examines the nature of defence planning the scientific goals that nuclear tests were designed to secure Anglo-American relationships the efficacy of British diplomacy and its contribution to arms control and disarmament. A key theme of the study is to show how the UK managed to balance the conflicting pressures created by its determination to remain a credible nuclear power whilst wanting to pursue disarmament objectives and how these pressures shifted over the period in question. Based on a wealth of primary sources this book opens up the largely ignored subject of the impact of arms control on the UK nuclear weapons programme. Its appraisal of the relationship between the requirements and developments of the UK nuclear weapons programme against international and domestic pressures for a test ban treaty will be of interest to anyone studying post-war British defence and foreign policy history of science arms control disarmament and non-proliferation and international relations. It also provides important background information on current events involving nuclear proliferation and disarmament. | British Nuclear Weapons and the Test Ban 1954–1973 Britain the United States Weapons Policies and Nuclear Testing: Tensions and Contradictions

The Welfare of Cattle

The Welfare of Cattle

Contains a selection of White Papers commissioned to better inform the exploration of cattle welfare. These are prepared by notable experts in their field to help provide factual context around selected topics that impact cattle welfare and production systems. Covers all aspects of cattle use in an accessible style making this a must have volume for anyone interested in cattle welfare or cattle medicine. Provides an in-depth picture of the distinctive beef and dairy cattle welfare practices and issues covering topics such as behavior breeding and genetic manipulation nutrition and feeding housing and management health and disease and transport and slaughter. Written by acknowledged leaders in animal science veterinary science philosophy and animal welfare presenting a truly multidisciplinary perspective on cattle welfare. Includes a section on understanding and managing animal welfare in both beef and dairy cattle discussing how cattle perceive the world animal handling and pain mitigation and how to assure that the cows have a reasonably good life. The Welfare of Cattle offers an accurate detailed account of the ethical and welfare concerns related to the human use of cattle. There is currently no significant book dealing with the welfare of cows animals often seen as archetypal paradigms of 'farm animals'. Covering both beef and dairy cattle the expert authors provide in-depth information on the husbandry roots of traditional agriculture the replacement of this system of stewardship by an industrial model and the resulting welfare challenges associated with industrial agriculture: feedlots highly industrialized dairies and slaughterhouses killing huge numbers of animals who have been transported great distances. This important book explores in detail the ways in which people who are providing care for cattle can take their first step or their next step toward enhancing the welfare of these animals. Nonparametric Statistical Tests A Computational Approach

Nonparametric Statistical Tests A Computational Approach

Nonparametric Statistical Tests: A Computational Approach describes classical nonparametric tests as well as novel and little-known methods such as the Baumgartner-Weiss-Schindler and the Cucconi tests. The book presents SAS and R programs allowing readers to carry out the different statistical methods such as permutation and bootstrap tests. The author considers example data sets in each chapter to illustrate methods. Numerous real-life data from various areas including the bible and their analyses provide for greatly diversified reading. The book covers: Nonparametric two-sample tests for the location-shift model specifically the Fisher-Pitman permutation test the Wilcoxon rank sum test and the Baumgartner-Weiss-Schindler test Permutation tests location-scale tests tests for the nonparametric Behrens-Fisher problem and tests for a difference in variability Tests for the general alternative including the (Kolmogorov-)Smirnov test ordered categorical and discrete numerical data Well-known one-sample tests such as the sign test and Wilcoxon’s signed rank test a modification suggested by Pratt (1959) a permutation test with original observations and a one-sample bootstrap test are presented. Tests for more than two groups the following tests are described in detail: the Kruskal-Wallis test the permutation F test the Jonckheere-Terpstra trend test tests for umbrella alternatives and the Friedman and Page tests for multiple dependent groups The concepts of independence and correlation and stratified tests such as the van Elteren test and combination tests The applicability of computer-intensive methods such as bootstrap and permutation tests for non-standard situations and complex designs Although the major development of nonparametric methods came to a certain end in the 1970s their importance undoubtedly persists. What is still needed is a computer assisted evaluation of their main properties. This book closes that gap. | Nonparametric Statistical Tests A Computational Approach

Gestational Diabetes Origins Complications and Treatment

Gestational Diabetes Origins Complications and Treatment

Given the rapid increase in the worldwide incidence of gestational diabetes the need for defining the risks and effects associated with raised glucose concentrations in pregnancy is great. Recent large studies are helping to define the risks as well as identify the benefits of reducing glucose intolerance. Written by an esteemed list of international authors Gestational Diabetes: Origins Complications and Treatment presents timely reviews relating to some of the most important aspects of gestational diabetes specifically its causes consequences and treatments. Divided into five sections the book begins with a section on metabolism in pregnancy and gestational diabetes dealing with maternal and foetal glucose metabolism and the controversial area of what actually constitutes gestational diabetes. The next section examines risk factors and causes of gestational diabetes including the obvious but often overlooked factors—being female and pregnant. The text also outlines environmental and genetic risk factors. The third section deals with the potential complications of gestational diabetes for both mother and offspring considering short-term and long-term effects. The largest section in the book addresses treatments in an effort to improve the outcome for the mother and the baby. Chapters describe the nutritional approach considered the cornerstone of treating gestational diabetes as well as evidence for the role of exercise in its treatment and a useful strategy for treating gestational diabetes pharmacologically. The final section discusses future prospects in screening diagnosis prevention pathophysiology and treatment of gestational diabetes. | Gestational Diabetes Origins Complications and Treatment

Proportionate Share Impact Fees and Development Mitigation

Proportionate Share Impact Fees and Development Mitigation

After decades of evolving practice often tested in court development impact fees have become institutionalized in the American planning and local government finance systems. But they remain contentious especially as they continue to evolve. This book is the third in a series of impact fee guidebooks for practitioners following A Practitioner’s Guide to Development Impact Fees and Impact Fees: Proportionate Share Development Fees. Proportionate Share Impact Fees and Development Mitigation is the culmination of the authors’ careers devoted to pioneering applications of the dual rational nexus test. That test requires (1) establishing the rational nexus between the need for infrastructure broadly defined to mitigate the impacts of development and (2) ensuring that development mitigating its infrastructure impacts benefits proportionately. The book elevates professional practice in two ways. First it shows how the rational nexus test can be applied to all forms of development infrastructure impact mitigation. Second it establishes the link between professional ethics and equity as applied to proportionate share impact fees and development mitigation. The book is divided into four parts with the first reviewing policy and legal foundations the second detailing the planning calculation and implementation requirements the third exploring economic ethical and equity implications and the fourth presenting state-of-the-art case studies. Proportionate Share Impact Fees and Development Mitigation sets new standards for professional practice.
