Forensic DNA Transfer

Forensic DNA Transfer

Forensic DNA Transfer provides a guide to the recognition and current understanding of DNA transfer in forensic criminal investigations. Increased improvements in technology mean that it is now routinely possible to obtain DNA profiles from non-visible deposits. How or when the DNA in question was deposited may be an issue in the context of the case especially if the donor of the DNA is not in dispute. A DNA profile alone cannot reveal when or how that DNA was deposited at a crime scene nor can it reveal the body matter from which it originated. Issues of transfer associated with activities may be debated—which the traditional discrimination purpose of DNA profiling cannot address. DNA may be everywhere and anywhere—in homes at workplaces during transport and on personal items including clothing. DNA from a person may be on an object they have never contacted or in a room they have never entered. Concepts discussed in the book include non-self DNA on hands through day-to-day activities the prevalence of background DNA in the environment and perhaps on the exhibit the persistence of any DNA transferred and that a DNA result will depend on these variables as well as recovery techniques. Since DNA may be transferred to an exhibit: (a) during the commission of a crime (b) before the crime and/or (c) after the crime through handling examination and testing this book covers various transfer pathways and sources of DNA. Documented cases of inadvertent transfer of DNA resulting in wrongful convictions or the misdirection of criminal investigations are discussed—with an emphasis on contamination mitigation throughout the entire process. Forensic DNA Transfer examines the additional complexity resulting from non-visible deposits of DNA that impact on sampling and testing regimes. The changing understanding of the composition of purported 'touch DNA' deposits from the skin including extracellular DNA transported via body secretions is described. Further the newer focus on interpreting DNA evidence—using activity level propositions and the rationale and associated issues—is also discussed.

Forensic DNA Profiling A Practical Guide to Assigning Likelihood Ratios

Forensic DNA Profiling A Practical Guide to Assigning Likelihood Ratios

DNA testing and its forensic analysis are recognized as the “gold standard” in forensic identification science methods. However there is a great need for a hands-on step-by-step guide to teach the forensic DNA community how to interpret DNA mixtures how to assign a likelihood ratio and how to use the subsequent likelihood ratio when reporting interpretation conclusions. Forensic DNA Profiling: A Practical Guide to Assigning Likelihood Ratios will provide a roadmap for labs all over the world and the next generation of analysts who need this foundational understanding. The techniques used in forensic DNA analysis are based upon the accepted principles of molecular biology. The interpretation of a good-quality DNA profile generated from a crime scene stain from a single-source donor provides an unambiguous result when using the most modern forensic DNA methods. Unfortunately many crime scene profiles are not single source. They are described as mixed since they contain DNA from two or more individuals. Interpretation of DNA mixtures represents one of the greatest challenges to the forensic DNA analyst. As such the book introduces terms used to describe DNA profiles and profile interpretation. Chapters explain DNA extraction methods the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) capillary electrophoresis (CE) likelihood ratios (LRs) and their interpretation and population genetic models—including Mendelian inheritance and Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. It is important that analysts understand how LRs are generated in a probabilistic framework ideally with an appreciation of both semicontinuous and fully continuous probabilistic approaches. KEY FEATURES:• The first book to focus entirely on DNA mixtures and the complexities involved with interpreting the results • Takes a hands-on approach offering theory with worked examples and exercises to be easily understood and implementable by laboratory personnel • New methods heretofore unpublished previously provide a means to innovate deconvoluting a mixed DNA profile assign an LR and appropriately report the weight of evidence • Includes a chapter on assigning LRs for close relatives (i. e. “It’s not me it was my brother”) and discusses strategies for the validation of probabilistic genotyping softwareForensic DNA Profiling fills the void for labs unfamiliar with LRs and moving to probabilistic solutions and for labs already familiar with LRs but wishing to understand how they are calculated in more detail. The book will be a welcome read for lab professionals and technicians students and legal professionals seeking to understand and apply the techniques covered. | Forensic DNA Profiling A Practical Guide to Assigning Likelihood Ratios

British Nuclear Weapons and the Test Ban 1954–1973 Britain the United States Weapons Policies and Nuclear Testing: Tensions and Contradictions

British Nuclear Weapons and the Test Ban 1954–1973 Britain the United States Weapons Policies and Nuclear Testing: Tensions and Contradictions

In 1962 Dean Acheson famously described Britain as having lost an Empire but not yet found a role. Perhaps nowhere is this more apparent than in the realms of nuclear weapons. An increasingly marginal world power successive post-war British governments felt that an independent nuclear deterrent was essential if the country was to remain at the top table of world diplomacy. Focusing on a key twenty-year period this study explores Britain's role in efforts to bring about a nuclear test ban treaty between 1954 and 1973. Taking a broadly chronological approach it examines the nature of defence planning the scientific goals that nuclear tests were designed to secure Anglo-American relationships the efficacy of British diplomacy and its contribution to arms control and disarmament. A key theme of the study is to show how the UK managed to balance the conflicting pressures created by its determination to remain a credible nuclear power whilst wanting to pursue disarmament objectives and how these pressures shifted over the period in question. Based on a wealth of primary sources this book opens up the largely ignored subject of the impact of arms control on the UK nuclear weapons programme. Its appraisal of the relationship between the requirements and developments of the UK nuclear weapons programme against international and domestic pressures for a test ban treaty will be of interest to anyone studying post-war British defence and foreign policy history of science arms control disarmament and non-proliferation and international relations. It also provides important background information on current events involving nuclear proliferation and disarmament. | British Nuclear Weapons and the Test Ban 1954–1973 Britain the United States Weapons Policies and Nuclear Testing: Tensions and Contradictions

Nonparametric Statistical Tests A Computational Approach

Nonparametric Statistical Tests A Computational Approach

Nonparametric Statistical Tests: A Computational Approach describes classical nonparametric tests as well as novel and little-known methods such as the Baumgartner-Weiss-Schindler and the Cucconi tests. The book presents SAS and R programs allowing readers to carry out the different statistical methods such as permutation and bootstrap tests. The author considers example data sets in each chapter to illustrate methods. Numerous real-life data from various areas including the bible and their analyses provide for greatly diversified reading. The book covers: Nonparametric two-sample tests for the location-shift model specifically the Fisher-Pitman permutation test the Wilcoxon rank sum test and the Baumgartner-Weiss-Schindler test Permutation tests location-scale tests tests for the nonparametric Behrens-Fisher problem and tests for a difference in variability Tests for the general alternative including the (Kolmogorov-)Smirnov test ordered categorical and discrete numerical data Well-known one-sample tests such as the sign test and Wilcoxon’s signed rank test a modification suggested by Pratt (1959) a permutation test with original observations and a one-sample bootstrap test are presented. Tests for more than two groups the following tests are described in detail: the Kruskal-Wallis test the permutation F test the Jonckheere-Terpstra trend test tests for umbrella alternatives and the Friedman and Page tests for multiple dependent groups The concepts of independence and correlation and stratified tests such as the van Elteren test and combination tests The applicability of computer-intensive methods such as bootstrap and permutation tests for non-standard situations and complex designs Although the major development of nonparametric methods came to a certain end in the 1970s their importance undoubtedly persists. What is still needed is a computer assisted evaluation of their main properties. This book closes that gap. | Nonparametric Statistical Tests A Computational Approach
