Assertive Religion Religious Intolerance in a Multicultural World

Assertive Religion Religious Intolerance in a Multicultural World

Questions about religions and religious institutions have changed dramatically since they first arose many years ago. In the beginning of the twenty-first century the link of religion with extreme ideologies captures our attention. Such questions have been the focus of a steadily growing number of books. What does Assertive Religion add to the debate?Emanuel de Kadt discusses the relationship of religion to wider social issues such as human rights and multiculturalism. He traces the growth during the religious revival over the past decades of assertive and even coercive forms of religion notably but not exclusively fundamentalist varieties. He deals with these questions as they relate to the three major Abrahamic religions thereby addressing a readership wider than that made up of persons interested exclusively in Judaism Christianity or Islam. The author takes on issues such as the effects of the Jewishness of Israel on the rights of Palestinians; the consequences of the centralized authority structure of the Roman Catholic Church; and the implications of the failure of reform-oriented Muslims to make their voices heard in an organized Islamic reform movement. He is even-handed focusing on both positive and negative features of each religious perspective though he does have a clear viewpoint. Assertive Religion adds to increasingly sharp political discussions on issues arising out of religion. It is a must read for anyone interested in how religion is shaping the world of tomorrow. | Assertive Religion Religious Intolerance in a Multicultural World

Hierarchic Electrodynamics and Free Electron Lasers Concepts Calculations and Practical Applications

Hierarchic Electrodynamics and Free Electron Lasers: Concepts Calculations and Practical Applications presents intriguing new fundamental concepts in the phenomenon of hierarchical electrodynamics as a new direction in physics. Concentrating on the key theory of hierarchic oscillations and waves this book focuses on the numerous applications of nonlinear theory in different types of high-current Free Electron Lasers (FEL) including their primary function in the calculation methods used to analyze various multi-resonant multi-frequency nonlinear FEL models. This is considered the first book to: Completely and systematically describe the foundation of hierarchical electrodynamics as a new direction of physics Fully represent the physics of high-current FEL—and associated models—from the hierarchic oscillation wave perspective Cover the multi-harmonic nonlinear theory of new types of electronic devices such as plasma-beam and two-stream FEL Formulate and substantiate the concept of cluster femtosecond FEL Analyze practical prospects for a new generation of a global Star Wars strategic defense systems These subjects involve a wide range of disciplines. Using numerous real-world examples to illustrate information and concepts the book offers a mathematical foundation to explore FEL applications as well as analyze hierarchic plasma-like electrodynamic systems and femto-second clusters of electromagnetic energy. Assembling fragmented concepts from existing literature the author re-examines classic approaches in order to develop new insights and achieve scientific breakthroughs. | Hierarchic Electrodynamics and Free Electron Lasers Concepts Calculations and Practical Applications

British Nuclear Weapons and the Test Ban 1954–1973 Britain the United States Weapons Policies and Nuclear Testing: Tensions and Contradictions

British Nuclear Weapons and the Test Ban 1954–1973 Britain the United States Weapons Policies and Nuclear Testing: Tensions and Contradictions

In 1962 Dean Acheson famously described Britain as having lost an Empire but not yet found a role. Perhaps nowhere is this more apparent than in the realms of nuclear weapons. An increasingly marginal world power successive post-war British governments felt that an independent nuclear deterrent was essential if the country was to remain at the top table of world diplomacy. Focusing on a key twenty-year period this study explores Britain's role in efforts to bring about a nuclear test ban treaty between 1954 and 1973. Taking a broadly chronological approach it examines the nature of defence planning the scientific goals that nuclear tests were designed to secure Anglo-American relationships the efficacy of British diplomacy and its contribution to arms control and disarmament. A key theme of the study is to show how the UK managed to balance the conflicting pressures created by its determination to remain a credible nuclear power whilst wanting to pursue disarmament objectives and how these pressures shifted over the period in question. Based on a wealth of primary sources this book opens up the largely ignored subject of the impact of arms control on the UK nuclear weapons programme. Its appraisal of the relationship between the requirements and developments of the UK nuclear weapons programme against international and domestic pressures for a test ban treaty will be of interest to anyone studying post-war British defence and foreign policy history of science arms control disarmament and non-proliferation and international relations. It also provides important background information on current events involving nuclear proliferation and disarmament. | British Nuclear Weapons and the Test Ban 1954–1973 Britain the United States Weapons Policies and Nuclear Testing: Tensions and Contradictions

Free Will and Predestination in Islamic Thought Theoretical Compromises in the Works of Avicenna al-Ghazali and Ibn 'Arabi

Free Will and Predestination in Islamic Thought Theoretical Compromises in the Works of Avicenna al-Ghazali and Ibn 'Arabi

The subject of human free-will versus divine predestination is one of the most contentious topics in classical Islamic thought. By focusing on a theme of central importance to any philosophy of religion and to Islam in particular this book offers a critical study of the intellectual contributions offered to this discourse by three key medieval Islamic thinkers: Avicenna al-Ghāzālī and Ibn ʿArabī. Through investigation of primary sources Free Will and Predestination in Islamic Thought establishes the historical political and intellectual circumstances which prompted Avicenna al-Ghāzālī and Ibn ʿArabī’s attempts at harmonization. By analysing the theoretical and linguistic ‘techniques’ which were employed to convey these endeavours this book demonstrates that the three individuals were committed to compromise between philosophical theological and mystical outlooks. Arguing that the three scholars’ treatments of the so-called qaḍā wa’l-qadar (decree and destiny) and ikhtiyār (free-will) issues were innovative influential and fundamentally more complex than hitherto recognized this book contributes to a fuller understanding of Islamic intellectual history and culture and will be useful to researchers interested in Islamic Studies Religion and Islamic Mysticism. | Free Will and Predestination in Islamic Thought Theoretical Compromises in the Works of Avicenna al-Ghazali and Ibn 'Arabi

Nonparametric Statistical Tests A Computational Approach

Nonparametric Statistical Tests A Computational Approach

Nonparametric Statistical Tests: A Computational Approach describes classical nonparametric tests as well as novel and little-known methods such as the Baumgartner-Weiss-Schindler and the Cucconi tests. The book presents SAS and R programs allowing readers to carry out the different statistical methods such as permutation and bootstrap tests. The author considers example data sets in each chapter to illustrate methods. Numerous real-life data from various areas including the bible and their analyses provide for greatly diversified reading. The book covers: Nonparametric two-sample tests for the location-shift model specifically the Fisher-Pitman permutation test the Wilcoxon rank sum test and the Baumgartner-Weiss-Schindler test Permutation tests location-scale tests tests for the nonparametric Behrens-Fisher problem and tests for a difference in variability Tests for the general alternative including the (Kolmogorov-)Smirnov test ordered categorical and discrete numerical data Well-known one-sample tests such as the sign test and Wilcoxon’s signed rank test a modification suggested by Pratt (1959) a permutation test with original observations and a one-sample bootstrap test are presented. Tests for more than two groups the following tests are described in detail: the Kruskal-Wallis test the permutation F test the Jonckheere-Terpstra trend test tests for umbrella alternatives and the Friedman and Page tests for multiple dependent groups The concepts of independence and correlation and stratified tests such as the van Elteren test and combination tests The applicability of computer-intensive methods such as bootstrap and permutation tests for non-standard situations and complex designs Although the major development of nonparametric methods came to a certain end in the 1970s their importance undoubtedly persists. What is still needed is a computer assisted evaluation of their main properties. This book closes that gap. | Nonparametric Statistical Tests A Computational Approach

Impacts of Sex Crime Laws on the Female Partners of Convicted Offenders Never Free of Collateral Consequences

Impacts of Sex Crime Laws on the Female Partners of Convicted Offenders Never Free of Collateral Consequences

This work is an exploratory examination of the experiences motivations and coping mechanisms of women who are involved in intimate relationships with registered sexual offenders. The study focuses both on women who were involved with an offender prior to the commission of his offense and who stayed with him post-conviction and on women who became involved with a registered offender after his sex offense conviction. Like the offender himself these women face a variety of challenges in responding to treatment of them by friends family the community and the criminal justice system. Utilizing the results of intensive interviews this work provides a unique look at the women who are one of the few sources of support for registered sexual offenders and assesses the effectiveness and wide-ranging implications of community notification and registration laws on public safety policy and practice. This work offers alternative approaches based on evidence and case studies and considers the significance of familial contact in buffering sexual recidivism. These women are the heretofore unstudied victims of sexual offending legislation. This book is essential reading for those in sociology criminology psychology and social work. For undergraduate or graduate students practitioners researchers or policy makers this thought-provoking book will shed light on how to optimize the reintegration of sex offenders. It assesses the effectiveness and wide-ranging implications of sex offender legislation on public safety policy and practice and considers alternative approaches to reduce sexual violence. | Impacts of Sex Crime Laws on the Female Partners of Convicted Offenders Never Free of Collateral Consequences
