Biodiversity Genetic Resources and Intellectual Property Developments in Access and Benefit Sharing

Debates about Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS) have moved on in recent years. An initial focus on the legal obligations established by international agreements like the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity and the form of obligations for collecting physical biological materials have now moved to a far more complex series of disputes and challenges about the ways ABS should be implemented and enforced: repatriation of resources technology transfer traditional knowledge and cultural expressions; open access to information and knowledge naming conventions farmers’ rights new schemes for accessing pandemic viruses and sharing DNA sequences and so on. Unfortunately most of this debate is now crystallised into apparently intractable discussions such as implementing the certificates of origin recognising traditional knowledge and traditional cultural expression as a form of intellectual property and sovereignty for Indigenous peoples. Not everything in this new marketplace of ABS has been created de novo. Like most new entrants ABS has disrupted existing legal and governance arrangements. This collection of chapters examines what is new what has been changed and what might be changed in response to the growing acceptance and prevalence of ABS of genetic resources. Biodiversity Genetic Resources and Intellectual Property: Developments in Access and Benefit Sharing of Genetic Resources addresses current issues arising from recent developments in the enduring and topical debates about managing genetic resources through the ABS regime. The book explores key historical doctrinal and theoretical issues in the field at the same time developing new ideas and perspectives around ABS. It shows the latest state of knowledge and will be of interest to researchers academics policymakers and students in the fields of intellectual property governance biodiversity and conservation sustainable development and agriculture. | Biodiversity Genetic Resources and Intellectual Property Developments in Access and Benefit Sharing

Genetic Seeds of Warfare Evolution Nationalism and Patriotism

Genetic Seeds of Warfare Evolution Nationalism and Patriotism

For millennia humanity has simultaneously deplored and waged war. With each conflict the stakes have risen and we now face global annihilation for the sake of a practice all the world claims to condemn. Is there some seemingly irresistible force that impels us toward our own destruction? To explain this central paradox of human behaviour Genetic Seeds of Warfare originally published in 1989 advances a startling new theory. It traces the origins of warfare back to early groups of Homo sapiens in competition for scarce resources showing that warfare evolved as these groups evolved: kin-group against kin-group; tribe against tribe; nation against nation. Rather than being tied to a specific gene warfare emerged as one of many behavioural strategies for maximising genetic survival. As social groups became more complex motivations for warfare developed from simple protection of blood relations to political appeals to shared ethnicity religion and national identity. But the ultimate cause of warfare is rooted in the most basic of human drives: the need to ensure that one’s genes will survive and reproduce. The authors challenge many assumptions about human behaviour in general and warfare in particular. They convincingly present the case for an evolutionary understanding of the propensity for warfare supporting their argument with data from a vast array of social and natural science research. In doing so they reveal why previous attempts at ending war have failed and make proactive suggestions toward the development of a new agenda for world peace. | Genetic Seeds of Warfare Evolution Nationalism and Patriotism

Principles of Toxicology Testing

Principles of Toxicology Testing

Nationally toxicology programs have evolved from a traditional exploration of the chemistry and applied toxicity of chemicals and drugs to a more comprehensive study of toxicology and toxicology testing as independent entities. Consequently the second edition of Principles of Toxicology Testing starts with basic toxicological principles including absorption distribution metabolism and elimination of toxins including chemicals and drugs. The book then continues with animal (in vivo) and in vitro toxicology testing methods associated with toxicological analysis and preclinical drug development. As in the first edition the book begins with an introduction into the fundamentals of toxicology (Section I) to prepare readers for the subsequent topics and continues through with a discussion of toxicokinetics and human risk assessment. This introductory material is useful in understanding the applications of toxicology testing. Section II describes the fundamental principles of toxicology testing in animals in greater detail. This section describes acute toxicity studies as well as subchronic and chronic studies performed on animals. Special emphasis is placed on study design and determination of classical indicators for acute and chronic testing such as the LD50. The book examines other short- and long-term animal toxicity testing methodologies including dermal ocular and reproductive toxicity testing. In addition mutagenicity and carcinogenicity studies are also discussed in separate chapters. Section III introduces and discusses in vitro alternatives to animal toxicology tests. This section emphasizes cell culture methodology and cellular methods for acute systemic toxicity target organ toxicity and local toxicity. The contributors present the advantages and disadvantages of alternative methods. They also describe the use of high-throughput screening and its applications the concepts of standardizatio

Automated Software Testing with Cypress

Automated Software Testing with Cypress

Unit Integration Testing (UIT) had been a challenge because there was no tool that could help in XHR programming and unit integration validations in an efficient way until Cypress arrived. Cypress started releasing versions in 2015 and became popular in 2018 with version 2. 0. 0. This book explores Cypress scripts that help implement ‘shift left testing’ which is a dream come true for many software testers. Shift left occurs in the majority of testing projects but could not be implemented fully because tools were unavailable and knowledge was lacking about the possibilities of testing early in the life cycle. Shift left is a key testing strategy to help testing teams focus less on defect identifications and more on developing practices to prevent defects. Cypress scripts can help front-end developers and quality engineers to work together to find defects soon after web components are built. These components can be tested immediately after they are built with Cypress Test Driven Development (TDD) scripts. Thus defects can be fixed straight away during the development stage. Testing teams do not have to worry about finding these same defects in a later development stage because Cypress tests keep verifying components in the later stages. Defect fixing has become much cheaper with Cypress than when other tools are used. The book also covers Behaviour Driven Development (BDD)-based Gherkin scripts and the Cypress Cucumber preprocessor which can improve test scenario coverage. Automated Software Testing with Cypress is written to fulfil the BDD and TDD needs of testing teams. Two distinct open source repositories are provided in Github to help start running Cypress tests in no time!
