Accountability of Policing

Accountability of Policing

Accountability of Policing provides a contemporary and wide-ranging examination of the accountability and governance of ‘police’ and ‘policing’. Debates about ‘who guards the guards’ are among the oldest and most protracted in the history of democracy but over the last decade we have witnessed important changes in how policing and security agencies are governed regulated and held to account. Against a backdrop of increasing complexity in the local national and transnational landscapes of ‘policing’ political legal administrative and technological developments have served to alter regimes of accountability. The extent and pace of these changes raises a pressing need for ongoing academic research analysis and debate. Bringing together contributions from a range of leading scholars this book offers an authoritative and comprehensive analysis of the shifting themes of accountability within policing. The contributions explore questions of accountability across a range of dimensions including those ‘individuals’ and ‘institutions’ responsible for its delivery within and between the ‘public’ and ‘private’ sectors and at ‘local’ ‘national’ and ‘transnational’ scales of jurisdiction. They also engage with the concept of ‘accountability’ in a broad sense bringing to the surface the various meanings that have become associated with it and demonstrating how it is invoked and interpreted in different contexts. Accountability of Policing is essential reading for academics and students involved in the study of policing criminal justice and criminology and will also be of great interest to practitioners and policymakers.

Floral Art Of Japan

Floral Art Of Japan

First published in 2005. Japanese flower arrangement is much more than an elegant amusement - it is an expression of what the Japanese call furyu - to turn away from strife and to lose oneself in the joys of peace and nature. It is the opposite of that other key aspect of Japanese culture - Bushido the way of the warrior. The virtues of Bushido are persistence fidelity endurance bravery and activity - those of furyu are subtlety gentleness restraint and repose. That they see no inconsistency or contradiction between these two ways of living is one of the most interesting characteristics of the Japanese people. This volume is a succinct and comprehensive guide to the history theory and practice of this exquisite art. It explains the three fundamental forms of Japanese flower arrangement - Shin Gyo and So as well as the proper arrangement of the tokonoma the alcove where the flowers are displayed. It explains how one has to 'see' the expressions and emotions in blossoms and branches to achieve the most harmonious combinations and gives the history of the art going back to the Ashikaga Shogunate describing the two great classical schools of Japanese flower arrangement - the formal (rikkwa) and the natural (nageire) styles. It also deals with two new schools - the heaven-earthman (ten-chi-jin) and literati (bunjin-ike) styles - concluding with an illustrated chapter on how to arrange flowers. This is a book full of timeless serenity and beauty. | Floral Art Of Japan

Change Continuity and Complexity The Mahāvidyās in East Indian Śākta Traditions

Change Continuity and Complexity The Mahāvidyās in East Indian Śākta Traditions

The Mahāvidyās are the representative Tantric feminine pantheon consisting of ten goddesses. It is formed by divergent religious strands and elements: the mātṛ and yoginī worship the cult of Kālī and Tripurasundarī Vajrayāna Buddhism Jain Vidyādevīs Śaiva and Vaiṣṇava faith Śrīvidyā the Brahmanical strand of Puranic traditions etc. This volume is the first attempt to explore the historical process through which these traditions culminated in the Mahāvidyā cult and the goddesses with different origins and contradictory attributes were brought into a cluster with special reference to socio-political changes in the lower Gaṅgā and Brahmaputra Valley between the 9th and 15th centuries CE. Based on a close analysis of Purāṇas Tantras and inscriptional evidence and on extensive field research on archaeological remains as well as sacred sites Jae-Eun Shin discusses the two trajectories of the Mahāvidyās in eastern Śākta traditions. Each led to the systematization of Daśamahāvidyās in a specific way: one as ten manifestations of Durgā upholding dharma in the cosmic dimension and the other as ten mandalic goddesses bearing magical powers in the actual sacred site. Their attributes and characteristics have neither been static nor monolithic and the mode of worship prescribed for them has changed in a dialectical religious process between Brahmanical and Tantric traditions of the region. This is the definitive work for anyone seeking to understand goddess cults of South Asia in general and the history of eastern Śākta traditions in particular. To aid study the volume includes images diagrams and maps. Please note: Taylor & Francis does not sell or distribute the Hardback in India Pakistan Nepal Bhutan Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. | Change Continuity and Complexity The Mahāvidyās in East Indian Śākta Traditions

When Cats Reigned Like Kings On the Trail of the Sacred Cats

When Cats Reigned Like Kings On the Trail of the Sacred Cats

In her fascinating exploration of feline history Georgie Anne Geyer explores the connections between the royal and sacred felines of ancient civilizations and the beloved domestic cats of today. Chasing an irresistible mystery across the globe Geyer conducts exhaustive research into the little-known puzzle of how cats came to occupy their unique position in the lives of humans. Treated with the tenacity resourcefulness and narrative instinct of a seasoned foreign correspondent the investigation yields unexpected answers and poses tantalizing new questions. It was Geyer's curiosity about her own cats that inspired her to study the history of human-feline relations and especially the exalted status of cats among the ancients as royal or sacred beings. In Egypt Geyer learned of the cat-goddess Bastet and of the cat's role in the transmigration of souls. In Myanmar she saw Leonardo DiCaprio Ricky Martin and the other incongruously named cats of the Nga Phe Kyaung monastery trained by the monks to jump through hoops. She even met a family who dutifully guards the heritage of the Japanese Bobtail cultivating the line in of all places rural Virginia. Richly illustrated with photographs of Geyer's journeys and historical cat images When Cats Reigned Like Kings describes forty-one recognized modern cat breeds plus other popular cats. Every cat lover can thus trace his or her cat to these breeds and their many relatives. The result is a remarkable book bound to delight and amaze cat fanciers and adventure seekers. | When Cats Reigned Like Kings On the Trail of the Sacred Cats

The Politics and Law of Democratic Transition Caretaker Government in Bangladesh

The Politics and Law of Democratic Transition Caretaker Government in Bangladesh

Peaceful legal and political ‘changing of the guards’ is taken for granted in developed democracies but is not evident everywhere. As a relatively new democracy marred by long periods of military rule Bangladesh has been encountering serious problems because of a prevailing culture of mistrust weak governance institutions constant election manipulation and a peculiar socio-political history which between 1990 and 2011 led to a unique form of transitional remedy in the form of an unelected neutral ‘caretaker covernment’ (CTG) during electoral transitions. This book provides a contextual analysis of the CTG mechanism including its inception operation manipulation by the government of the day and abrupt demise. It queries whether this constitutional provision even if presently abolished after overseeing four acceptable general elections actually remains a crucial tool to safeguard free and fair elections in Bangladesh. Given the backdrop of the culture of mistrust the author examines whether holding national elections without a CTG or an umpire of some kind can settle the issue of credibility of a given government. The book portrays that even the management of elections is a matter of applying pluralist approaches. Considering the historical legacy and contemporary political trajectory of Bangladesh the cause of deep-rooted mistrust is examined to better understand the rationale for the requirement emergence and workings of the CTG structure. The book unveils that it is not only the lack of nation-building measures and governments’ wish to remain in power at any cost which lay behind the problems that Bangladesh faces today. Part of the problem is also the flawed logic of nation-building on the foundation of Western democratic norms which may be unsuitable in a South Asian cultural environment. Although democratic transitions on the crutch of the CTG have been useful in moments of crisis its abolition creates the need for | The Politics and Law of Democratic Transition Caretaker Government in Bangladesh
