How to Stop a Hijacking Critical Thinking in Civil Aviation Security

How to Stop a Hijacking Critical Thinking in Civil Aviation Security

Hijackings and bombings have plagued civil aviation since 1930 and air rage incidents are on the rise. While there is aircraft and inflight training available for air marshals other first responders receive minimal training on inflight security awareness and protocols. There are no other resources currently available to flight crews or armed first responders that specifically address inflight security and how to address threats of disturbances on airplanes. How to Stop a Hijacking provides readers with fundamental principles on how to think more critically about onboard security threats. The aircraft cabin poses unique environment and security challenges and first responders can apply security awareness and critical thinking skills to establish a safer environment in the cabin and airport for everyone onboard. The lessons in this book are driven with the central objective of teaching the reader how to counter inflight aggression and maintain tactical control of the cabin. Written by a former federal air marshal instructor this book looks at the recent rash of air rage incidents and violence on airplanes in addition to the real and ever-present threat of hijack or potential explosive device. How to Stop a Hijacking is a practical guide that offers methodological and tactically proven strategies for stopping violent acts onboard an aircraft inflight. | How to Stop a Hijacking Critical Thinking in Civil Aviation Security

The Milne Papers Volume III: The Royal Navy and the American Civil War 1862–1864

The Milne Papers Volume III: The Royal Navy and the American Civil War 1862–1864

This collection covers the period February 1862-March 1864 which constituted the final two years and one month that Rear-Admiral Sir Alexander Milne commanded the Royal Navy’s North America and West India Station. Its chief focus is upon Anglo-American relations in the midst of the American Civil War. Whilst the most high-profile cause of tension between the two countries — the Trent Affair — had been resolved in Britain’s favour by January 1862 numerous sources of discord remained. Most turned on American efforts to blockade the so-called Confederacy efforts that often ran afoul of international law not to mention British amour-propre. As commander of British naval forces in the theatre Milne’s decisions and actions could and did have a major impact on the state of affairs between his government and that of the US. While noting in one private exchange with the British ambassador to Washington Richard Lord Lyons that he had been enjoined to abstain from any act likely to involve Great Britain in hostilities with the United States Milne added ominously yet I am also instructed to guard our Commerce from all illegal interference and it is plain from his correspondence that both he and the British government were prepared to use force in that undertaking. Thus between apparently high-handed behaviour by the US Navy and Milne’s and the Palmerston government’s resolve not to be pushed beyond a certain point the ingredients for a major confrontation between the two countries existed. Yet most of Milne’s efforts were directed toward preventing such a confrontation from occurring. In this endeavour he was joined by Lyons and by the British government. No vital British interest was at stake in the conflict raging between North and South and thus the nation was unlikely to become directly involved in it unless provoked by rash US actions. Yet there was no shortage of such provocations: the seizure of British merchant vessels bound from one neutral port to another detaining such ships without first conducting a search of their cargo for evidence of contraband of war the de facto blockade of British colonial ports apparent violations of British territorial waters the seizure of British merchantmen off the neutral port of Matamoros Mexico and the use of neutral ports as bases of operations by US warships among them. In responding to these and other sources of dispute between the US and Britain Milne proved adept at pouring oil on troubled waters so much so that in a late 1863 letter to Foreign Secretary Lord Russell Lyons lamented his impending departure from the station: I am very much grieved at his leaving…. No change of admirals could be for the better. This collection centres upon Milne’s private correspondence especially that between him and Lyons First Lord of the Admiralty the Duke of Somerset and First Naval Lord Vice Admiral Sir Frederick Grey. It also includes private letters to and from many of Milne’s other professional correspondents and important official correspondence with the Admiralty. | The Milne Papers Volume III: The Royal Navy and the American Civil War 1862–1864

Humanitarianism Human Rights and Security The Case of Frontex

Examining the relationship between humanitarianism human rights and security in the governance of borders and migration this book analyses the case of the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex) challenging the common assumption that humanitarianism and human rights provide a critical basis for countering securitisation. Arguing that these are not three opposing discourses and modes of governing the author contributes to a deeper understanding of their connections and combined effects in border governance. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork interviews and document analysis the book offers three perspectives on Frontex’s changing relationship to humanitarianism and human rights. In doing so it provides a multifaceted account of Frontex and its gradual appropriation of what are often considered pro-migrant discourses. Combining organisational sociology with a Foucauldian analysis the book speaks to ongoing debates on continuity and change in the security field and provides insights into studying security organisations more generally. Drawing on insights from Critical Migration and Border Studies Critical Security Studies Critical Humanitarianism and Human Rights Studies and Organisational Sociology the book will generate interest to multiple disciplines including Sociology International Relations Politics Anthropology European Studies and Geography. | Humanitarianism Human Rights and Security The Case of Frontex

Disability and Qualitative Inquiry Methods for Rethinking an Ableist World

Disability and Qualitative Inquiry Methods for Rethinking an Ableist World

This groundbreaking text makes an intervention on behalf of disability studies into the broad field of qualitative inquiry. Ronald Berger and Laura Lorenz introduce readers to a range of issues involved in doing qualitative research on disabilities by bringing together a collection of scholarly work that supplements their own contributions and covers a variety of qualitative methods: participant observation interviewing and interview coding focus groups autoethnography life history narrative analysis content analysis and participatory visual methods. The chapters are framed in terms of the relevant methodological issues involved in the research bringing in substantive findings to illustrate the fruits of the methods. In doing so the book covers a range of physical sensory and cognitive impairments. This work resonates with themes in disability studies such as emancipatory research which views research as a collaborative effort with research subjects whose lives are enhanced by the process and results of the work. It is a methodological approach that requires researchers to be on guard against exploiting informants for the purpose of professional aggrandizement and to engage in a process of ongoing self-reflection to clear themselves of personal and professional biases that may interfere with their ability to hear and empathize with others. | Disability and Qualitative Inquiry Methods for Rethinking an Ableist World

Synthetic Biology Science Business and Policy

Synthetic Biology Science Business and Policy

For nearly forty years using recombinant DNA tools researchers and then businesses have genetically engineered organisms by transferring naturally occurring genes from one organism into another. Doing so modifies the genetic code of living cells imparting new traits and achieving desired results; this is done in the production of proteins pharmaceuticals and seeds. Synthetic biology argues Solomon could free scientists from the need to find natural genes to make such desired modifications. Synthetic biology permits more complex and sophisticated bioengineering than what can be achieved through previous genetic modification techniques. Drawing on non-biological scientific and engineering disciplines including information technology and nanotechnology synthetic biology strives to rearrange an organism's genes on a far wider scale by rewriting its genetic code the chemical instructions need to design assemble and operate a species. By allowing the writing of artificial genetic codes synthetic biology can transform existing industries and spawn new ones creating new products as well as radically reshaping existing items. Arguing for self-regulation by the scientific and business communities Lewis D. Solomon recommends a policy framework that would guard against governmental overregulation which could create a barrier to innovation. Although synthetic biotechnology holds considerable social and economic potential absent a nurturing regulatory climate it may prove difficult to translate research discoveries into commercially viable applications. | Synthetic Biology Science Business and Policy

Freedom of Navigation and the Law of the Sea Warships States and the Use of Force

Freedom of Navigation and the Law of the Sea Warships States and the Use of Force

There has been a recent increase in clashes between warships asserting rights to navigate and states asserting sovereignty over coastal waters. This book argues for a set of rules which respect the rights of coastal states to protect their sovereignty and of warships to navigate lawfully whilst also outlining the limits of each. The book addresses the issue of the clash between warships and states by considering the general principles applying to use of force in the law of the sea and the law of national self-defence. It focuses on the right of coastal states to use force to prevent passage of warships which threaten their sovereignty with particular reference to the specific maritime zones as well as by warships to ensure passage or to defend themselves. The book also assesses the extent to which the law of armed conflict may be applicable to these issues. The conclusion draws together a set of rules which take account of both contemporary and historical events and seeks to balance the competing interests at stake. Providing a concise overview of the enduring issue of freedom of navigation this book will appeal to anyone studying international law the law of the sea security studies and international relations. It will also be of interest to naval coast guard and military officers as well as government legal advisors. | Freedom of Navigation and the Law of the Sea Warships States and the Use of Force

Bankers Like Us Dispatches from an Industry in Transition

Bankers Like Us Dispatches from an Industry in Transition

This book will resonate with anyone no matter where you reside on this journey whether newbie or old guard. If you want to be part of this change you need to understand all about the messy middle that Leda so expertly describes in this book. If you read this book and it doesn’t resonate then I suggest you think about stepping aside. — Curt Queyrouze President Coastal Community Bank The world is going digital and so is banking—in fits starts and circles. Why is it so hard? Why is the industry constantly getting in the way of its own technological progress and what can we do about it all? This book looks at the human and structural obstacles to innovation-driven transformation and at the change in habits mindsets and leadership needed for the next stage of the digital journey and argues that this change will be brought about not by external heroes and saviours not by a generation yet to be born but people just like us. People who understand the industry and its quirks. Bankers who have the grit determination and energy to drive change. Bankers like us. This book celebrates and chronicles the shared experience of bankers like us. It starts with a ‘this is who we are’ piece including the author’s trench credentials. It then presents an overview of corporate culture (this is what we deal with and a few ideas on how to handle it) as well as a piece on why transformation is so difficult and so many get it wrong; a piece on the challenges our lack of diversity brings or compounds and a hopeful look-ahead on what a team of principled dedicated folks can do despite everything. | Bankers Like Us Dispatches from an Industry in Transition

Foreign Currency Claims Judgments and Damages

Foreign Currency Claims Judgments and Damages

Currency fluctuation currency wars and even potential currency collapse (the Euro the Bitcoin) are all risks that commercial parties must consider and guard against. This book gathers together in one volume all the information and advice practitioners are likely to need when advising on advancing or defending claims involving a foreign currency element. The determination of the proper currency (or currencies) of a claim often has a dramatic effect on the level of a court judgment or arbitration award that is ultimately obtained. It is therefore vital for practitioners to accurately assess claims which involve a foreign currency element. The authors guide the reader through the legal principles governing how foreign currency claims are treated in English law. The book covers both the treatment of foreign currency in substantive law as well as such procedural matters as how to claim interest correctly on a foreign currency claim and how to plead prove or disprove the applicability of a particular currency. This book is an invaluable and essential resource for all lawyers involved in international commerce but will be of particular interest to those engaged in international finance commodity transactions international shipping and transport and the insurance of assets and liabilities abroad. Those who practise in this country need guidance in navigating the tricky waters that The Despina R unleashed. This excellent book provides that guidance. The authors have been uniquely well placed to meet the challenge of analysing what is a perplexing body of jurisprudence and to suggest principled answers to currency issues that have not yet been the subject of judicial decision. They consider not merely claims in contract and tort but every type of claim that might raise an issue in relation to a foreign currency. The Rt Hon.
