Routledge Handbook of Defence Studies

Routledge Handbook of Defence Studies

The Routledge Handbook of Defence Studies provides a comprehensive collection of essays on contemporary defence studies by leading international scholars. Defence studies is a multi-disciplinary study of how agents predominantly states prepare for and go to war. Whereas security studies has been broadened and stretched to cover at times the near totality of international and domestic affairs and war studies has come to mean not just operations and tactics but also experiences and outcomes defence studies remains a coherent area of study primarily aimed at how defence policy changes over time and in relation to stimulating factors such as alterations in power strategy and technology. This new Handbook offers a complete landscape of this area of study and contributes to a review of defence studies in terms of policy security and war but also looks forward to new challenges to existing conceptions of defence and how this is changing as states and their militaries also change. The volume is divided into four thematic sections: Defence as Policy; Defence Practice; Operations and Tactics; and Contemporary Defence Issues. The ability to review the field while also looking forward to further research is an important element of a sustainable text on defence studies. In as much as this volume is able to highlight the main themes of defence studies it also offers an in-depth look into how defence issues can be examined and compared in a contemporary setting. This Handbook will be of great interest to students of defence studies strategic studies war studies security studies and IR.

Defence Diplomacy Strategic Engagement and Interstate Conflict

Defence Diplomacy Strategic Engagement and Interstate Conflict

This book analyzes examples of strategic engagement in order to identify the factors which contribute to the success or failure of defence diplomacy in preventing interstate conflict. For more than a century nations have engaged in defence diplomacy to cultivate mutual understanding and mitigate conflict. A subset of defence diplomacy is strategic engagement defined as peacetime defence diplomacy between nations that are actual or potential adversaries. This book analyzes three cases of strategic engagement in order to elucidate the factors which contribute to the success or failure of this diplomacy in preventing conflict. It uses an inductive framework to compare strategic engagement in the following cases: Anglo– German defence diplomacy prior to World War I; U. S. –Soviet defence diplomacy during the Cold War; and post-Cold War U. S. –China defence diplomacy. Based upon archival literature and personal interview research the book argues that defence diplomacy can mitigate the risk of interstate conflict between potential adversaries. The lessons learned from this book can be employed to discern the significant elements conducive to achieving a successful outcome of strategic engagement and averting conflict or even war. This book will be of much interest to students of defence studies diplomacy studies foreign policy and international relations. | Defence Diplomacy Strategic Engagement and Interstate Conflict

Automatism as a Defence

Making British Defence Policy Continuity and Change

Making British Defence Policy Continuity and Change

This book explores the process by which defence policy is made in contemporary Britain and the institutions actors and conflicting interests which interact in its inception and continuous reformulation. Rather than dealing with the substance of defence policy this study focuses upon the institutional actors involved in this process. This is a subject which has commanded far more interest from public Parliament government and the armed forces since the protracted bloody and ultimately unsuccessful British military involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan. The work begins with a discussion of two contextual factors shaping policy. The first relates to the impact of Britain’s ‘special relationship’ with the United States over defence and intelligence matters while the second considers the impact of Britain’s relatively disappointing economic performance upon the funding of British defence since 1945. It then goes on to explore the role and impact of all the key policy actors from the Prime Minister Cabinet and core executive to the Ministry of Defence and its relations with the broader ‘Whitehall village’ and the Foreign Office and Treasury in particular. The work concludes by examining the increasing influence of external policy actors and forces such as Parliament the courts political parties pressure groups and public opinion. This book will be of much interest to students of British defence policy security studies and contemporary military history. | Making British Defence Policy Continuity and Change

NATO and Collective Defence in the 21st Century An Assessment of the Warsaw Summit

This book presents a cutting-edge assessment of NATO's collective defence strategies in the immediate aftermath of the July 2016 NATO Warsaw Summit. Collective defence and deterrence came back on the agenda at the 2014 Wales Summit following the Russian annexation of Crimea and was in many respects a game changer for NATO. The Warsaw Summit was a follow-up and operationalization of the Wales Summit as well as adding further initiatives to the agenda. But is NATO delivering? This book provides a thorough assessment of the on-going debates and discussions taking place within and outside of NATO in Europe and North America. In its return to deterrence NATO is confronted with challenges relating to strategic thinking capability development and the role of nuclear weapons. It has also raised questions about the future prospects for NATO membership for countries such as Sweden and Finland with broader implications for the security situation in the Baltic region. Central to all this is of course NATO’s relationship with Russia and questions of a new security dilemma in turning bringing to the fore the challenge of maintaining an appropriate balance between deterrence and dialogue. The chapters in this volume address these questions and provide a much-needed analysis of the results of the NATO Warsaw Summit. This book will be of interest to policymakers and students of NATO international security European Politics security studies and IR in general. | NATO and Collective Defence in the 21st Century An Assessment of the Warsaw Summit

Self-Deception

Self-Deception

Self-deception poses longstanding and fascinating paradoxes. Philosophers have questioned whether and how self-deception is even possible; evolutionary theorists have debated whether it is adaptive. For Sigmund Freud self-deception was a fundamental key to understanding the unconscious and from The Bible to The Great Gatsby literature abounds with characters renowned for their self-deception. But what exactly is self-deception? Why is it so puzzling? How is it performed? And is it harmful? In this thorough and clearly written introduction to the philosophy and psychology of self-deception Eric Funkhouser examines and assesses these questions and more: Clarification of the conceptual background and Basic problem of self-deception including Freud and Davidson and the important debate between intentionalists and motivationalists Deflationary accounts that appeal to cognitive and motivational biases with emphasis on how motives and emotions drive self-deception Intentional self-deception and the divided mind including the role of the unconscious in recent psychological research Challenges that self-deception poses for philosophy of mind and psychology especially for our understanding of intention belief and deception Biology and moral psychology of self-deception: Is self-deception functional or beneficial? Are the self-deceived to be held accountable? Combining philosophical analysis with the latest psychological research and including features such as chapter summaries annotated recommended reading and a glossary Self-Deception is an excellent resource for students of philosophy of mind and psychology moral psychology and ethics as well as those in related fields such as psychology and cognitive science.

Emotional Self-Knowledge

Emotional Self-Knowledge

This volume sheds light on the affective dimensions of self-knowledge and the roles that emotions and other affective states play in promoting or obstructing our knowledge of ourselves. It is the first book specifically devoted to the issue of affective self-knowledge. The relation between self-knowledge and human emotions is an often emphasized but poorly articulated one. While philosophers of emotion tend to give affectivity a central role in making us who we are the philosophical literature on self-knowledge focuses overwhelmingly on cognitive states and does not give a special place to the emotions. Currently there is little dialogue between both fields or with other philosophical traditions that have important contributions to make to this topic such as phenomenology and Asian philosophy. This volume brings together philosophers from the relevant fields to explore two related sets of questions: First do philosophers of emotion exaggerate the importance of our affective lives in making us who we are? Or is it philosophers of self-knowledge who misunderstand emotions? Second what is the role of emotions in self-knowledge? What sort of self-knowledge can be secured by paying attention to our emotions? Emotional Self-Knowledge is an essential resource for researchers and advanced students working on philosophy of emotion philosophy of mind epistemology philosophical psychology and phenomenology. Chapter 1 and Chapter 10 of this book are freely available as a downloadable Open Access PDF at http://www. taylorfrancis. com under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives (CC-BY-NC-ND) 4. 0 license.
