This book explores the social implications and challenges of low-carbon development. The argument of the book is that a broad understanding of low-carbon development is essential for mitigating climate change and enabling development in a carbon-constrained world but there are risks that low-carbon development might come at a price that is both social and economic. These risks need to be carefully assessed and reduced. The main aim of the book is to explore critically analyse and propose different ways of understanding low-carbon development from a social perspective in both developed and developing countries. The author uses concepts such as low-carbon development social policy sustainable development and environmental justice to understand the social implications of low-carbon development projects. The book first elaborates the need to understand the social issues and challenges of low-carbon development in both developed and developing countries. It then discusses five contemporary challenges of low-carbon development: the social consequences of Chinese hydropower dams in the Mekong region; the cost of the transition to renewable energies such as wind energy in Germany; the challenges of carbon offsetting in Brazil; the nexus of fuel-inefficient housing and fuel poverty in England; solar power for refugees in Africa. The book fills a crucial gap for researchers postgraduates practitioners and policy-makers in the fields of climate change development and social policy. Britain’s two recent referenda - on Brexit (2016) and on Scottish independence (2014) - have raised in the public mind fundamental questions about the future of the UK. It seems that for the first time the public the media and the political elite have woken up to the fact that in different parts of the UK there are different histories different aspirations and different imagined futures in relation to a whole range of vitally important political issues. But what the public debate often fails to recognise is that in many areas of public life – perhaps especially education – the UK is already a federal state and in key respects has been so for many years. Low-dimensional compounds are molecules that correspond to various shapes such as rod ladder (one-dimensional compounds) and sheet (two-dimensional compounds). They are ordinarily found in electromagnetic fields. Recently versatile low-dimensional compounds were proposed for use as components of various functional materials. These new-class low-dimensional compounds contribute significantly to industrial/materials sciences. The molecular architecture consisting of low-dimensional compounds can also be found in nature. One example is the cell cytoskeleton which is a network- or bundle-like architecture consisting of rod-like protein assemblies. The cell accomplishes its motility by structural transition of the cytoskeleton—that is phase transition of the architecture of low-dimensional compounds in response to some stimuli induces shape changes in cells. Another example is nacre which is composed of layered aragonite platelets usually a metastable CaCO3 polymorph. The layered inorganic platelets give nacre its stiffness and noncombustibility. Thus the molecular architecture of low-dimensional compounds in natural life contributes to their functionality. The role of small hydropower is becoming increasingly important on a global level. Increasing energy demand and environmental awareness has further triggered research and development into sustainable low-cost technologies. In developing countries particularly in rural areas the possibility of local power generation could considerably improve living conditions. With this in mind the development of a next generation low-head hydropower machines was subject of investigation in the EU-project HYLOW. Being part of the research lines of that project this thesis presents a numerical modelling approach to improve the design of machines like water wheels for increased hydraulic efficiency. Nowadays Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) enables numerical models to be quite accurate and incorporate physical complexities like free surfaces and rotating machines. The results of the CFD simulations carried out in this research show that a change in blade geometry can result in higher torque levels thereby increasing performance. Numerical simulations also enabled to determine the optimal wheel-width to channel-width ratio and further improve performance by modifying the channel bed conditions upstream and downstream of the water wheel. With a power rating in the low kilowatt range low-head hydropower machines like optimised water wheels seem to have a clear potential for small-scale energy generation thereby contributing to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals by providing local energy solutions. | Low Head Hydropower for Local Energy Solutions
