André Jolivet: Chant de Linos (Quintet-Mixed)

André Jolivet (1905-1974) composed Chant de Linos for the Solo de Concours at the Paris Conservatoire in 1944. Written for Flute, Harp and String Trio, this version contains the full score. This piece is quite difficult to execute but will stand out in a competition or a recital. Inspired from what is called a Chant de Linos , a threnody (or lament to the dead) in the Greek antiquity, this piece is also about Linos, son of Apollo. A brilliant musician, Linos taught Orpheus the Lyre and got killed by Heracles for excessive criticism. André Jolivet is a French composer who was greatly inspired by the Antiquity and had a strong interest for atonality. He also wrote many chamber music pieces, eleven concertos, some orchestral and some vocal music.

Betsy Jolas: Pages From A Love Diary

“What’s important in music that’s based on a poem – on the emotion inspired by a poem – is the music and power of emotion it harbours within itself”. These words, written in 1949 by poet Pierre Reverdy, would make a deep impression on composer Betsy Jolas . She’d just sent the writer her Six mélodies for mezzo-soprano and piano composed on poems from his masterwork Plupart du temps. The songs were accompanied by a letter that betrayed her fear of distorting his ideas. In creative terms, there was no need to worry – Betsy Jolas must have placed this conviction at the heart of her reflection on the relation between text and music. Nearly sixty years later, the musician decided to take several fragments of these beloved poems of Reverdy and place them, in the form of quotations, into new musical and theatrical perspectives. The exalted memory of the words led to D’Un Journal D’Amour , a mini-cantata for Voice and Alto offered as a wedding gift to soprano Eliette Prévôt and violist Antoine Tamestit, who premiered it together in Montreuil in 2010.

W. A. Mozart: Symphony No.31 In D 'Paris' K.297 (Study Score)

Following nearly 4 years without having composed a new symphony, although still writing opera overtures and works from orchestral serenades, Mozart composed the ‘Paris’ Symphony. Mozart received the commission from Joseph Legros, when him and his mother were in Paris in 1778. Mozart composed the work for the largest orchestra he’d written for until then in a symphony, marking the first time which he had used Clarinets in one of his symphonies. Mozart had taken pains to write the work in a style that would appeal to the French and, despite a dismal rehearsal, the first performance was well received. Available here is a study score of Mozart’s Symphony No.31 in D ‘Paris’ K.297 , which is ideal for study and perusal usage.

Xavier Leroux: Romance No.1 in A minor (Flute & Piano)

Son of a military bandleader, Xavier Leroux (1863-1919) was a French composer who studied at the Paris Conservatoire under Jules Massenet and Théodore Dubois. Although primarily known for his Operas, Leroux 's  Deux Romances  for Flute and Piano remain prominent in the instrument's repertoire. Dedicated to Philippe Gaubert, the first Romance is composed in A minor. Characteristics are typical of the French romantic era, such as semiquaver flourishes, use of the sultry lower register of the Flute, variations in articulation, much use of performance directions and chromaticisms, among other aspects. For all aspiring, advanced flautists, Leroux 's  Deux Romances  make for a sublime addition to the repertoire.

W. A. Mozart: Concerto in D K314

Mozart's wonderful Concerto in D K314 for Flute and Piano. This terrific volume also includes Cadenzas by P.Taffanel, P.Gaubert and J.Donjon. Strictly speaking, not an original concerto, as Mozart created this wonderful tune by reworking an earlier Oboe concerto, but the degree of revision and his sensitivity to each instrument mark this as a superb concerto for flute which explores all facets, especially the flowing, liquid-like mellifluousness. This is a beautiful and light work with the emphasis on the solo instrument more pronounced.
