Sinfonietta No. 1 was originally written for brass band, commissioned by the Dutch National Championships 2011 in Groningen. It also served as the test piece for the Swiss National Championships 2011 in Montreux, Switzerland. In 2012, Johan de Meij created this version for wind orchestra.Unlike most of Johan de Meij's compositions, Sinfonietta No. 1 is an abstract, non-programmatic work. It consists of three movements, in which the thematic material of the opening measures - an upward fifth jump - returns in various shapes and forms throughout the piece. The slow middle section features solo passages by cello, English horn and bassoon, all starting with thesame fifth jump. The final movement presents an Elgar-like march theme, interspersed with quotes from the second movement, and ending with the opening theme of movement I.

Downtown Divertimento : for wind orchestra

The inspiration for Downtown Divertimento comes from Johan de Meijs daily wanderings in Chelsea, in lower Manhattan. The day begins with a leisurely walk to Madison Square Park with his dog Alice. They visit the dog run where she meets up withother city canines. On the way back they have a moment of reflection looking at the nearby Flatiron Building, the striking triangular city landmark. Johan goes for a run later in the day. His jogging shoes naturally head for The Highline, anabandoned railway viaduct that was transformed into a lushly landscaped National Park. He absorbs the spectacular views of the Hudson River and the majestic New York skyline as if seeing them for the first time.The movements are:1) Dog Play (at Madison Square Park)2) Flatiron Reverie3) Hitting the Highline

Klezmer is the traditional instrumental music for weddings and parties of the Yiddish speaking Jews of Eastern Europe. Its origin goes back to the sixteenth century. At this time Yiddish culture was at its peak in the countries where the Jews then lived: Poland, Ukraine, Byelorussia (White Russia), Latvia, Lithuania, Moldavia, Romania, Slovakia and Hungary. In recent years there has been a revival in popularity of this style of music and it is often played outside of its traditional context. Johan de Meij has arranged five classics from the Klezmer repertoire into a colourful selection for concert band.

UFO Concerto : for euphonium & piano

UFO CONCERTO, the first solo work by Johan de Meij for euphonium solo, is not a traditional concert work in the classical sense. It is comprised of five movements that are thematically interconnected: Andante – Con moto , Giocoso – Vivo, Andantecantabile, Vivace, and Alla Marcia – Vivace.

This melodic hymn was commissioned by the town of Margraten in Limburg, The Netherlands for the celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Margraten Municipality. William Tell Overture - Finale : for Brass Quintet & (Percussion ad lib.)

This spectacular finale from Rossini’s William Tell Overture was arranged for the CANADIAN BRASS, who is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2020. There are optional parts for percussion, and there is also a version for symphonic brass (14 players) and percussion.

Virtual Bones : Three Classical Themes for Trombone Quartet

Three Classical Themes by Tchaikovsky, Beethoven and Holst for Trombone Quartet, written at the request of The New Trombone Collective for the Virtual Bones Project and arranged by Johan de Meij. Two of these themes were previously usedin De Meijs Extreme Makeover and Extreme Beethoven.

Wind Power : Overture for wind orchestra

Wind Poweris a powerful overture for concert band, commissioned on behalf of a company that specialises in renewable solar and wind energy. So, from wind power to wind music, the piece contains five sections, entitled: Static, Energetic, Sparkling, Powerful and Unplugged

Dutch Masters Suite : for Wind Orchestra

For this exciting work Johan de Meij took his inspiration from Rembrandt’s The Night Watch, Vermeer’s Love Letter and Steen’s Prinsjesdag. In the first movement the solo trombone keeps watch at night, whilst in the second movement lyrical lute music accompanies Vermeer’s Love Letter. The third movement takes place in a tavern, where the drinking, singing and (increasingly inarticulate) music take place. An epilogue from the watchful trombone brings the piece to a peaceful end. This new work by Johan de Meij was the set-piece for 2nd division concert bands at the 16th WMC in Kerkrade 2009.
