Aladdin Suite

The large creative output of the Danish composer Carl Nielsen (1865 - 1931) contains six symphonies, chamber music, vocal works and music for the theatre: two operas (Saul & David and Maskerade) and stage music for sixteen different plays. The stage music for Aladdin was written at the request of Johannes Nielsen, the director of the Royal Theatre in Copenhagen. This production was based on the drama Aladdin (1805) by the Danish author Adam Oehlenschläger. Already before the premiere at the Royal Theatre, Carl Nielsen had adapted some of the music for the concert hall: he conducted the first performance of six of the seven movements of the concert suite on February6th, 1919. The 'Jupiter Hymn' comes from the fourth movement ,"Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity" from the orchestral suite "THE PLANETS" by the English composer Gustav HOLST (l874 - 1934), written between 1914 and 1917. 'The Planets" was premiered in 1918 by Sir Adrian Boult and the Royal Philharmonic Society and remains one of the most colourful examples of our 20th-century orchestral literature. The Hymn is very suitable to start your concert program; for more solemn occasions, the alternative ending may be used.

The Ceremonial Fanfare was originally written for orchestral brass and percussion, commissioned by The Orchestra Osaka Symphoniker from Osaka, Japan. The world première performance took place on April 12, 2005 at The Symphony Hall in Osaka, conducted by maestro Heiichiro Ohyama.In April 2009, the combined brass sections of the New York Philharmonic and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra gave an impressive performance in New York City. The concert commemorated the Henry Hudson Quadricentennial and 400 years of friendship between The United States and The Netherlands.This version for brass band was written at the request of EBBC, the European Brass Band Contest 2012in Rotterdam, to serve as the opening fanfare of the festival.

The Lord of the Rings

25 years ago, in 1988, John de Meij presented his first composition - an entire symphony. Symphony No. 1 ‘The Lord of the Rings’ was released on CD by the Royal Military Band of the Netherlands conducted by Pierre Kuijpers, reaching worldwide recognition. In 1989, the composition - which employs various themes from Tolkien’s novel The Lord of the Rings - was awarded the prestigious American Sudler composition award. The complete symphony is composed for symphonic wind orchestra and is comprised of five parts with a duration of some 45 minutes altogether. Paul Lavender has arranged the highlights of the symphony in a simplified version that’s aimed at most concertbands.
