Sex, Drums, Rock 'n' Roll! : The Hardest Hitting Man in Show Business

Voted Drummer of the Year by Rolling Stone magazine, living legend Kenny Aronoff first became a recognizable personality behind the drum kit playing for 17 years for John Mellencamp on hits including the #1 single Jack and Diane, Hurts So Good, Pink Houses (Ain't That America), and Small Town, among many others, and he's been keeping the beat to the sound track of a rock and roll generation ever since! MTV made Kenny a household name in the 1980s, and throughout the 1990s and 2000s he has exploded into one of the most in-demand session drummers in the business, responsible for such #1 hits as Jon Bon Jovi's Blaze of Glory, Meatloaf's I'd Do Anything for Love, That Thing You Dofrom the motion-picture sound track, Heaven Is a Place on Earth by Belinda Carlisle, Michelle Branch hits including Everywhere, Are You Happy Now?, and Breathe, and Melissa Etheridge's I Wanna Come Over, among many more. Aronoff's been the beat-keeper for mythic Creedence Clearwater Revival front man John Fogerty for the past 20 years, the house drummer for the Kennedy Center Honors for Willie Nelson, Bruce Springsteen, Sting, Lady Gaga, and others, at the White House, and fulfilled his lifelong dream of playing with the Beatles onstage on the CBS TV special The Night That Changed America backing up Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr. Now, in Sex! Drums! and Rock 'n' Roll, Kenny Aronoff gives music fans everywhere a long-awaited glimpse into his life in music.

The Elements of Song Craft : The Contemporary Songwriter's Usage Guide to Writing Songs That Last

The Elements of Song Craft : The Contemporary Songwriter's Usage Guide to Writing Songs That Last

An effective new songwriting vocabulary supported by ASCAP, BMI, and SESAC! The Elements of Song Craft does for songwriters what William Strunk Jr. and E.B. White's The Elements of Style did for English language students and writers alike: gives an all-in-one definitive manifesto for contemporary songwriters in every genre to organize, understand, and practice the rules, principles, definitions, forms, and song craft needed to create good songs, songs of undeniable creative power and beauty, songs that last. This book beelines directly to the most important aspect of writing good songs - identifying the key emotion living at the heart of the song - then offers a step-by-stepprocess to harnessing that singular emotional power. Additionally, a dozen other strategies, formulas, perspectives, and exercises are offered in the book. The Elements of Song Craft introduces, for the first time to a general songwriting audience, an effective new songwriting vocabulary utilized by songwriters taught in the Song Arts Academy method and supported by ASCAP, BMI, and SESAC, the world's leading Performance Rights Organizations at the heart of the songwriting business, as well as at NYU Steinhardt's and the New School's songwriting programs, for over sixteen years. Thousands of song arts participants, including hit songwriters and The Voice and American Idol contestants, have been trained in this method.

This Bird Has Flown

This Bird Has Flown

The Beatles' sixth studio album, Rubber Soul, was a game changer. By December 1965, when the album was released, the Beatles had played the first arena rock show at Shea Stadium for 55,000 delirious fans, been awarded MBE (Member of British Empire) medals, and were indisputably the greatest musical phenomenon since Elvis Presley. With their first film, A Hard Day's Night, John, Paul, George, and Ringo laid down the blueprint for everyone who ever wanted to form a group. The movie, entertaining as it was, became an instruction manual for aspiring pop stars of the day on how to play, dress, and act. Richard Lester's 1964 comedy turned out to be the touchstone for every music videothat followed. Then, with the release of Rubber Soul, the Beatles created an artistic benchmark to which their peers measured their craft and creativity. Touring the world over two years, the band had grown up fast. Both musically and lyrically their new album represented a major leap. Upon hearing Rubber Soul, Bob Dylan allegedly remarked, I get it, you're not cute anymore. Newsweek hailed the Beatles as the Bards of Pop, while critic Greil Marcus claimed Rubber Soul was the best album they would ever make. For Traffic's Steve Winwood, the album broke everything open. It crossed music into a whole new dimension and was responsible for kicking off the sixties rock era. In This Bird Has Flown, John Kruth not only analyzes the songs and making of Rubber Soul, putting the album in context of the turbulent times in which it was created, but captures the spirit of musical innovation and poetry that makes the record a standout in the Beatle's canon.
