Carus has continued the recording of the complete Works of Louis Vierne in the Frauenkirche Dresden with the first part of the 24 Pièces de fantaisie. Kay Johannsen performs the Suites op. 51 and 54 [1926 27] on the Kern organ in the Frauenkirche. The final movement of the Troisième suite op. 54, “Carillon de Westminster,” is by far the most well-known piece of this collection, and next to the finale of the 1ère Symphonie is surely the most famous of all Vierne’s compositions. Kay Johannsen makes full use of all the sonoral possibilities of the French Kern Organ and skillfully combines his sensitive interpretation with the extraordinary acoustic of the Frauenkirche. Chamber music with organ is a rarity among the musical repertoire. Scarcely a composer has dared to attempt to compose for the charming and challenging combination for solo strings and organ. All the more significant is the contribution of Josef Gabriel Rheinberger, the composer of the Court of Munich, who knew the sounds and colors of the organ like almost no other of his contemporaries, and who knew how to employ them in the "mellifluous art of setting tones." The Suite op. 149 [a "piano trio" with organ, instead of piano], die Drei Stücke op. 150 for violoncello and organ and the Suite op. 166 for violin and organ are romantic character pieces and are - especially inthe suites - sensitive adaptations of baroque form types. In the new edition, the collection of 67 motets [Carus 4.100] is expanded by the addition of two three-choir motets and three choral songs; the foreword and Critical Report have been updated, reflecting the latest state of research. “... the most important body of motets between Johann Sebastian Bach and Felix Mendelssohn ...” [Frieder Bernius]. During his lifetime Homilius was regarded as one of the most famous and productive composers of sacred music, but in the 19th century he fell into oblivion. Only now is he being recognised in his role as one of the most important composers of the ‘Empfindsamer’, or sensitive, style. His motets clearly display the compositionalcharacteristics of early classicism: the counterpoint is subordinated to the simple harmonies, the regularly-structured themes follow the ideal of the ‘unity of sentiment’ and of ‘pleasing, natural singing’. The collection contains something for all occasions and every level of difficulty. The informative foreword contains details about the composer’s life and work, together with suggestions for performance practice. A detailed Critical Report completes the edition.

Bonum Est Confiteri Domino

Psalm 92 praises the works of God lyrically and joyfully. As early as pre-Christian times it belonged to the liturgy of Sabbath worship. Japanese composer Matsushita has set this beautiful psalm in motet style and was strongly inspired by the Catholic liturgical Gregorian melody of the antiphon of the same name and a well-known Halleluja on the 8th tone. His hymn of praise therefore begins almost modestly and humbly. Characteristic of this is Matsushita’s omission of the martial-sounding verses of the psalm. Only in the concluding Halleluja does the composition intensify through a dance-like rhythmic figure to fortissimo, to then return to the introverted openingmood. Matsushita’s setting treats the text in a humble and sensitive way and is mainly homophonic to match its mood. He writes the vocal lines in ranges which are grateful and rewarding to sing. The vocal lines split in all four parts, and there are short solos in tenor and soprano. This tonal work is also well within the capabilities of choirs less experienced in contemporary music, and a great addition for liturgical and concert use.
