Corpus Christi, With Cat And Mouse is a setting of fragments selected from the Richard Hill Commonplace Book, an early 16th century manuscript in the library of Balliol College, Oxford. Commissioned by the Master and Fellows of Balliol College to commemorate the centenary of the death of Benjamin Jowett, Master of Balliol 1870-1893, this work was first performed by the Chapel Choir of Balliol College conducted by Mark Dawes in November 1993.For unaccompanied SATB choir. This vocal score includes a piano accompaniment for rehearsal purposes.

For clarinet and piano. In February 1909, Debussy was elected a member of the Conseil Superieur of the Paris Conservatoire and, in this capacity, was called on to serve on the jury at internal competitions. He was invited to write two test pieces for the 1910 clarinet contest; one for the interpretation class, the other for the sight reading test. The Premiere Rhapsodie was composed during December 1909 and January 1910, concurrently with work on the first book of Preludes for piano.

As each page of the score is turned, and sometimes in between turns, the music?s character changes radically. The performer also has to develop rapidly during the five or six minutes it takes to play this piece.

Il Rozzo Martello for unaccompanied choir SATB, by Peter Maxwell Davies, was commissioned by BBC Radio 3. It was first performed on 14th August 1997 at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, London, by the BBC Singers conducted by Stephen Cleobury.A Michaelangelo sonnet lies at the heart of Il Rozzo Martello - a contemplation on the process of artistic creation and the role of inspiration within it, the sculptor's ?crude hammer?; of the title, in Davies's words, ?a pale echo of the creative efforts of exploring the same theme and similar imagery?. This introduction is distinguished from the setting of Michaelangelo's test by adopting a plainsong style, although it builds to a climax with progressively rich harmony Duration: c 12 minutes.

This work was a test piece for the International string Quartet competition in 2005, Premio Paulo Borciani, It was inspired by a keyboard piece of the same name, A Sad Paven for these Distracted Tymes by Thomas Tomkins (1572-1656). Tomkins had a long association with Worcester Cathedral, where he was organist - appointed magister choristarum in 1596 - and lived within the precincts until shortly before his death. At the same time, he was organist of the Chapel Royal. When the city of Worcester surrendered to Cromwell's parliamentary forces in 1646, Tomkins had to watch the hasty dismantling of his cathedral organ and the abolition of all choral services. These were the 'distracted tymes' of the 'sad paven' which he wrote in enforced retirement at Worcester.

Robert Saxton: Fantazia For String Quartet (Score)

Quoting Saxton: My Fantazia for String Quartet was complete in December 1993 in response to a commission from the London International String Quartet Competition for a test piece for the 1994 competition. Funds were provided by the John S Cohen Foundation.The title gives the clue to the nature of the music: the viol fantasia was the chosen form of composition for the greatest English composers of the mid-seventeenth century, Lawes, Jenkins, Ferrabosco in particular. They inherited the techniques of vocal polyphony from Byrd and Gibbons and forged a new, instrumental polyphonic style. The culmination of this genre was reached in the magnificent works of Henry Purcell around 1680, and it was Purcell who adopted the spelling ?Fantazia?.I have always loved this music, and when asked to write a short piece for strings, I decided to pay tribute to this under-rated tradition. Most fantazias consisted of short, joined sections, and I have expanded this to create and eight-minute piece in three larger sections, the essence being contrapuntal interplay and equality of part-writing. (Any idea of stylistic reference would be absurd ion the late twentieth century). The first section is a lyrical allegro moderato which leads into a sustained and intense slow movement; this, in turn, gives way to a final quick section of a dancing character, a feature frequently encountered in Purcell?s own consort pieces.
