Centennial Prelude

This short opening music was composed on commission of the symphonic band of Jan Van der Roost's village (= Kontich near Antwerp / Belgium). In 1991, this community band celebrated its 100th anniversary. After composing commissioned pieces from different countries (even from Japan), this was the most 'near' commission he ever received indeed!It is a short but varied piece, featuring all sections of the band. After a short introduction, played by the brass instruments, a crisp rhythm starts and boxes the main theme. After a second theme, played by brass and percussion, a short melodical passage brings some 'rest'. At the end, the fanfare of the introductionreoccurs.Although this "Centennial Prelude" isn't a really demanding piece, it sounds colourful and energetic. It has been recorded on CD by the band of the 'Royal Dutch Airforce' and the 'Desford Colliery Brass band'.

Written for creative musicians and audiences, the listener is given the opportunity of making up his own story to fit the music, without even the restriction of composer’s comments.

Light of the Sword

This work takes both its name and inspiration from a lighthouse “Sword Cape” that keeps watch near Japan’s naval base. The piece describes how, come rain or shine, the lighthouse bids a safe journey to departing ships, guides them during their travels and eventually welcomes them home again. The music evokes many musical images - grand ships sailing by, white-capped waves, the deep blue of the ocean and the light of ‘sword cape” as it silently guides ships over the mysterious waters.

The White Stone

The White Stone was commissioned by the band of the catholic parish of Dossenheim on the occasion of the 1250th anniversary of the town of Dossenheim near Heidelberg, Germany. The work is named after a high peak (White Stone) in the east of the town. Throughout the piece the composer uses the tune ‘How lovely you are, my Dossenheim’ in different forms and shapes, and musically he depicts the history and landscapes of this idyllic town. A challenging and versatile concert work with lots of beautiful melodies as well as rhythmical and energetic sequences.

Killarney

The enchanting town of Killarney in County Kerry, Ireland, has been an inspiration to many artists, saints, and scholars over many centuries. It lies in the heart of the beautiful Killarney National Park, and near Ireland’s highest mountains. There are many places of interest to be found in Killarney and the surrounding area such as churches and other historical buildings, as well as a varied landscape with waterfalls, lovely valleys, and gorgeous lakes. The town also has many great restaurants, nice crafts shops and lively pubs where traditional Irish music is often heard. A visit to Killarney inspired Johan Nijs to describe his impressions in this composition. The typicalsounds of Irish music echo throughout the work.

Cole Porter was one of the great masters of Broadway musicals during the thirties, forties and fifties, with So in Love, from the musical Kiss Me Kate, being one of his best loved works. It has been recorded by many artists including Bing Crosby, Lulu, Shirley Bassey and Julie Andrews, however it is the Ella Fitzgerald version that is best known. This jazzy musical classic can now be enjoyed by your brass band with this excellent new arrangement.

Als die alte Mutter (Songs My Mother Taught Me) is the fourth of Anton n Dvo_ák’s Gypsy Songs (Opus 55), a cycle he composed in the year 1880. This moving song was written to a German poem by Adolf Heyduk, and in the course of time, it has been performed and recorded by great singers like Nellie Melba, Joan Sutherland and Renée Fleming. The appealing melody is known to a large public. In this edition, two versions have been combined: an instrumental adaptation of the song, and an adaptation for soprano with a concert band accompaniment - both made by Tohru Takahashi.

Hector Berlioz (1803-1869) once remarked: “My life is a novel that greatly interests me.” Experiences in his personal life had a great influence on his compositions. Symphonie Fantastique, written in 1830, is also autobiographical: he subtitled the work Episode in the Life of an Artist. The symphony echoes his feelings for an actress. The Marche au Supplice (march into torture) he described as: “The artist dreams he has killed his beloved, that he has been sentenced to death and is being led to the scaffold. The procession moves to the notes of a march that is now sombre and turbulent, now radiant and stately, and in which boisterous outbursts suddenly dissolve intothe heavy sound of marching feet.”

Roll of Honour

On a war memorial in the Dutch village of Wons is engraved a list of names to honour the fallen in World War II. This is the basis for the name of this piece. However, this composition was written for everyone who has made Wons what it is today: a pretty place near to Lake IJssel with a comfortable way of life. The piece begins with a celebratory introduction in which the village is presented to the listener. There follows a delightful rhythmic and high-tempo theme that reflects the happiness, innocence and carefree atmosphere before the war. Now we hear a moody, fragmented theme depicting soldiers shooting. This is brought to a close with dissonant clusters of sound,intoning the dreadful tragedy of the war. The ensuing quiet gives way to a calm middle section in a minor key that portrays both frustration and consolation. The fast tempo of the beginning returns, this time in the form of a victory march. We hear freedom being celebrated. We hear the previous happy, innocent and carefree themes, too. There follows a festive, martial theme, a tribute to the village, before the piece closes with sounds of celebration.
