Andrew Oxspring: An Out-Of-This-World Christmas (KS2)

Andrew Oxspring: An Out-Of-This-World Christmas (KS2)

Christmas musical for 7-11 years (KS2). Running time 60 minutes. When a space craft crash-lands on a distant planet, the astronauts face the real possibility of not getting back home in time to enjoy Christmas with their loved ones! Can they convince their weird and wonderful alien hosts to give them a helping hand? Will they be able to share with them a little festive fun? And can the true message of Christmas still be understood millions of light years from Earth?Plot summaryFollowing the opening song (Out Of This World) we join four mechanics making final adjustments to a super hi-tech intergalactic spaceship! They discuss the mission, the hiccups and set-backs that have delayed the launch, and wonder how the astronauts will cope being many light-years from home so close to Christmas. The mission controllers then call for the launch site to be cleared as the four astronauts enter and prepare to board. They are slightly concerned that they may not be back in time for turkey and trimmings, but are assured that the mission will run smoothly (song - Back On Earth For Christmas Day). After a supersonic lift-off the ship speeds through the Earth's atmosphere and into deep space. Once Mission Control has informed them that they're on course, the astronauts relax and enjoy a space-walk outside, where they dance with the beautiful array of stars that light their way. (song - Starry Night)It soon becomes clear to Mission Control and the crew that all is not well. They lose control of the ship, which hurtles towards an unknown planet! Having miraculously survived the crash-landing, the astronauts activate the on-board robots to assess the ship's damage and explore outside (dance - Robot Dance). Once they are given the all-clear the astronauts leave the ship, but soon get the feeling they are being watched! When they bump into the fearsome alien inhabitants of what they learn is the planet Zork, they're pretty sure their numbers are up! (song - Song Of The Zorkonians)However, once the Zorkonians are satisfied that their visitors have come in peace, they welcome them, keen to find out all about them. The Astronauts explain about the crash and how, sadly, it seems unlikely they will back to Earth for Christmas. (song - The Place We Call Home)Of course, the word 'Christmas' means nothing on Zork, so it's up to the astronauts to demonstrate just what a wonderful thing it is, and why they are so desperate not to miss it! (song - Christmas Ditty). Having heard about Santa Claus, carol singing, crackers, family meals and all the ways in which Christmas is celebrated, the Zorkonians are impressed, but want to know why such celebrations happen. The astronauts go on to explain the true meaning of Christmas (Nativity tableau and song - Carol Medley).Convinced that Christmas is something not to be missed the alien hosts agree to help. With the astronauts ship beyond repair the Zorkonians offer them Zork's one and only space craft, as a Christmas present! When asked how they can ever be repaid for their kindness, the Zorkonians request just one thing in return... to be allowed to travel back with the astronauts to enjoy Christmas on Earth! And who can blame them? With a rousing reprise of the song 'Out Of This World' it's time to show the Zorkonians just what all the fuss is about!

Daisy Bond/Ian Faraday: Stargazers (KS1)

Christmas musical for 4-7 years.Running time 40 minutes (KS1) approx.Three wise men (Balthazar, Melchior and Caspar) have spent many years watching the night skies, waiting for the stars to reveal a sign of great things to come. As time goes by they have grown impatient, as well as old and grey! However, one night a brand new star appears, and they begin an eventful journey which ends with the realisation that some things in life are definitely worth waiting for!Plot summaryFor many long years three wise men, Balthazar, Melchior and Caspar, have been watching the night sky, studying the stars and waiting for them to reveal a sign of great importance. (song ? Stargazing) Not knowing quite what this sign will be, or when they?ll see it, they have become rather impatient ? after all, they are not as young as they used to be!One night, however, far away in a land to the west, a young woman called Mary is visited by an angel. He tells her she will soon bear God a son ? a son who will grow to be a saviour! (song ? The King Of All Kings) Not longer after, the three wise men suddenly see in the sky the sign they have been waiting for! (song ? A Brand New Star) As the heavens come alive with the arrival of a new star, the wise men consult the scriptures and know they must follow it to where a new king will be born. (song ? Saddle Up - part 1) Meanwhile, Mary and her husband-to-be, Joseph, must also leave their home town, and travel to Bethlehem to have their names included in a new register. (song ? Saddle Up - part 2) Little do they all know that their paths are soon to meet!As the star leads them westward, the wise men arrive at the palace of the cruel and selfish King Herod. He and his wife are, as usual, throwing a lavish knees-up for their many hangers-on! (song ? One Big Party) The king and queen are shocked to hear that these visitors are seeking a new baby king, and worry how His birth might affect their extravagant lifestyle! Herod cunningly asks the wise men to find the baby then tell him of His whereabouts, so he too can ?pay his respects?. He is, however, secretly planning to kill Him! In a dream the wise men are warned by angels not to return to tell Herod where the baby is, but to go straight home once they have found Him. (song ? Keep It A Secret)Mary and Joseph have now arrived in Bethlehem. Unable to find a proper room, they must make do with a stable in which to settle down for the night, and as the new star comes to rest overhead, Jesus is born. (song ? Heaven On Earth) Shepherds soon come to visit, bringing the gift of a lamb and worshipping by the manger in which He is lying. Then, just as He opens His eyes, Balthazar, Melchior and Caspar, guided by the star, arrive to greet the new king! They solemnly present the gifts they have brought, explaining the significance of each one. (song ? Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh)Heeding the words of the angels, the wise men head straight home. Although glad to be back, they reflect on the excitement of their journey following the star, and wonder what further adventures lie ahead. But until then, they relax on their sumptuous cushions and carry on doing what they do best...stargazing! (song ? Stargazing reprise)

Mick Riddell: Edith's Wartime Scrapbook

All year round musical for 7-11 yearsRunning time 60 minutes approx.Whilst moving out of the house in which she has lived for 80 years, Edith Coleman discovers an old scrapbook from her childhood. The turn of every page rekindles memories of a time when war affected every aspect of her daily life. But despite the perils of the Blitz, evacuation, rations and bossy ARP wardens, we learn of how families and communities cared for and supported each other, found comfort and humour in their unusual circumstances, and ultimately triumphed in the face of adversity.Whether you are looking for a rousing school musical to swell the hearts of your cast and audience, or a comprehensive curriculum resource that educates and entertains, ?Edith?s Wartime Scrapbook? is all you could wish for, and more!Plot summaryWhilst moving out of the house in which she has lived for 80 years, Edith Coleman discovers an old scrapbook from her childhood. The turn of every page rekindles memories of a time when war affected every aspect of her daily life, and these memories are eagerly recounted to the removal people helping her, and to us the audience. (song ? Wartime Memories)Firstly, we find ourselves in the front room of the same house, but at the outbreak of the Second World War. The Coleman family discusses the fact that, although war has been declared, nothing much seems to be actually happening! The only real use that Fred (Edith?s scamp of a younger brother) can find for his gas mask is to make rude noises with it! (song ? This Phoney War) However, as the days and weeks progress, Fred and Alice (Edith?s younger sister) find themselves at the train station, bidding an emotional farewell to their family as, along with lots of other children, they are evacuated. (song ? Journey On A Train) Edith?s older brother, Sidney, will also be catching a train. He, however, will be travelling abroad to fight for his country, much to the worry of his parents. The Blitz has ended the phoney war with a bang! As ARP wardens patrol (song ? Put That Light Out), local residents gather in the air-raid shelters. We hear of how rationing and those dreaded powdered eggs are the blight of their lives, but also how everyone is pulling together and literally digging for victory! (song ? Keep Our Spirits Flying) Women are flocking to the factories and onto the land to keep the nation armed and fed (song ? Women At War), and the ?old boys? of the Home Guard are doing their bit too, if rather comically, to aid the war effort! (song ? We Are The Home Guard)As the USA enters the war, the young ladies are very excited at the arrival of American soldiers in Britain. At the dancehall we learn that, although popular with the female population, these charming visitors are seen as more of a threat to the local lads than Hitler himself! (song ? Hollywood Girls) However, the harsher realities of the war are made apparent as we witness Sidney caught up in the fighting at Arnhem. He and his comrades, fearful for their lives, take a moment to write what could be their last ever letters home. (song ? Will You Be There?) Will Sidney make it back, and will the Coleman family be reunited? With the end of the war and VE celebrations in full swing, we understand that victory has come at a cost. Yet the overwhelming feeling is one of hope, and an appreciation of the enduring spirit that enabled famil

Paris, a handsome but sly Trojan, is asked to make the tough decision on their behalf. Each goddess offers him a fabulous reward if he chooses in her favour (song - Pick Me, Paris), but it is Aphrodite's promise to give him the most beautiful mortal woman, Helen of Sparta, which clinches it. Furious at this, Hera and Athene vow to bring destruction on Paris' home city of Troy.Paris arrives as a guest at the court of Menelaus, king of Sparta, and immediately falls for his beautiful wife, Helen. Struck with a well aimed arrow from Eros' bow, she in turn falls for Paris (song - Completely Stuck On You) and, in a trance, is whisked back to Troy. The vengeful Paris and his father, King Priam, decide to lure Achilles into the city by using Princess Polyxena as a honey trap! It works, and as Achilles excitedly gets ready for a romantic liaison Paris shoots an arrow into his vulnerable heel. The Greeks are overcome with grief at the death of their top man (song - Always And Forever), and revenge is swift. Philoctetes slays Paris in a duel, releasing Helen from her trance-induced love, and with her help secret plans are made for the Greeks' invasion of Troy. The Trojans are curious as to what the hammering sounds are in the Greeks' camp (song - Chop-Chop, Brother), and surprised to see their enemy's fleet of ships sailing away from the shores of Troy. On discovering a huge wooden horse which is left, they believe, as a gift from their fleeing foes, they rejoice in their supposed victory and bring it into the city. As night falls, the heroes emerge from the belly of the horse and massacre the entire Trojan population in its sleep! Finally victorious (song - Job Done) they return with Helen to Greece, finishing the tale with a resounding reprise of the song Troy Story.

However, their wits are no match for Gretel's, and she and her brother make a comical escape. They run deeper into the forest, where things get a little creepier, and talking trees warn them that 'this is no place for children!' (song - This Bad, Bad Place). Finally, exhausted and hungry, the children stumble across an enchanting cottage (song - The Gingerbread House), built from every delicious confectionary imaginable. Encouraged by a curious group of goblins, they eat their fill, before being introduced to the owner of the cottage! Hansel is imprisoned while Gretel must 'force-feed' him in order to, as the old witch puts it, 'fatten him up' for the pot! (song - Better Than One Is Two).As the wicked woman makes final preparations for her big meal (song - Dinner At The Double), it's down to the brave Gretel to once again save the day. Colin Magee/Andrew Oxspring: A Big Green Adventure

All year round musical for 7-11 years (KS2)Running time 60 minutes approx. This fast-paced, fun-packed musical pulls no punches in delivering its big green message! Join Snowy and Chip on a voyage of discovery from their threatened forest home to the big city. Meet a host of colourful characters, including the ratty inhabitants of the landfill site, jet-lagged food items on the supermarket shelf, rush-hour drivers and the enigmatic Professor Plantpot, who all show us just how fragile our planet is... and what we can do about it!Plot summaryOur story begins with a meeting of the forest's animal elders, presided over by chief elder, Snowy. The untrustworthy and sneaky Weezil brings news that the humans have plans to 'develop' the forest, and suggests that giving their blessing to such a development would bring the forest residents a wonderful, new, hi-tech standard of living (song - What Kind Of World?'). The elders vote on whether or not to welcome the humans, but with the vote tied it rests with Snowy to decide their fate. Snowy consults the forest goddess, Natura, and is told to take a journey of discovery to the city before making a decision, to find out more about human behaviour. Leaving the future of the forest in the balance, Snowy, and fellow elder and friend Chip, embark on their adventure. As they set off, they experience first hand the plight of the forest's trees, and learn how man's actions have had a devastating effect (song - It Doesn't Pay To Be A Tree). But they also learn how human behaviour can change to reverse this effect. Next, the pair stumble upon the revolting, yet comical rats, Itchy and Scabs, who inhabit the landfill site. They witness the waste created by humans, and how this provides a 'paradise' for the roguish rodents! (song - Welcome To Our Paradise.)Next it's on to the supermarket, where Snowy and Chip meet some rather jet-lagged food items, who explain the environmental impact of their being flown thousands of miles just to satisfy human tastes for exotic and un-seasonal produce (song - What's The Deal?). Having learned what can and should be done to improve this situation, Snowy and Chip then encounter rush hour in the city (song - Driving Song)! They meet a very pushy car salesman, only to be 'rescued' by the brilliant Professor Plantpot who, along with some 'green' friends, explains that many humans do care about the planet, and are changing their behaviour accordingly.Snowy and Chip learn how, with a little thought and effort, humans can reduce global warming, save energy, and create less waste (song - Switch It Off). The professor also demonstrates the limitless possibilities of recycling (song - R.E.C.Y.C.L.E.), unveiling Robbie - a robot made entirely from junk! With their new friends in tow, Snowy and Chip are in a race against time to get back to the forest, which has now fallen under the control of Weezil! Will the humans and their bulldozers be welcomed with open arms? Will forest life ever be the same again? That remains to be seen, but one thing is for sure, with the final song (Make A Change Today) still ringing in their ears, your audience will feel uplifted, inspired, and above all... thoroughly entertained!

Andrew Oxspring: A Blast From The Past

Andrew Oxspring: A Blast From The Past

End of year/leavers musical for 7-11 yearsRunning time 60 minutes approx.Try telling a child what school used to be like in Mum and Dad's (or even their grandparents') day, and they'd never believe you! Well, here's an opportunity to let them experience it for themselves, and also provide a nostalgic trip for those who can remember when free school milk came in bottles! When navy-blue knickers were every schoolgirl's must-have accessory! When a swish of the cane awaited any child who pushed their luck! When school photographs were taken with cameras that contained film, and everyone learned to read with 'Janet & John'. But although a lot has changed since then, one thing stays the same?the one thing that is celebrated in this fantastic new musical?school can be a lot of fun! Plot SummaryFollowing the opening song (?A Blast From The Past?) we join two children, Alice and James, at home with their family. They are feeling slightly put-out that a number of their classmates will be missing the final week at school in favour of early holidays to Disney World and Centre Parks, while they still have to face the daily grind! As Mum, Dad, Gran and Grandpa try to console them with the fact that their last week will be more relaxed, with trips, parties, non-uniform days and suchlike, the conversation turns to their own memories of school in the ?olden? days! These recollections provide us with some hilarious snapshots of what things used to be like in the dim and distant past! For example, what did school children used to wear? Well, with the aid of a catwalk, two flamboyant presenters and a few reluctant models, we find out the answer! In a fashion show that demonstrates what every discerning child would have worn to school through the ages, we are re-introduced to some memorable designs, culminating in the celebration of a truly classic item! (song ? ?Navy Blue Knickers?)Dad digs out an old whole-school photo and we learn how, with skill, timing and nimble feet, he?s managed to appear twice in the same picture! Confused? All is revealed, and we come to appreciate that having your photo taken at school these days can be a slightly more stressful affair for all concerned?especially the photographer! (song ? ?Sit Still And Smile?)James and Alice then listen in stunned silence as the adults talk about the methods that ?old-school? headteachers used to discipline unruly pupils! We witness a training day when enthusiastic heads are put through their paces and instructed in the best techniques for wielding a cane! Painfully funny! (song ? ?Six Of The Best?)Remember free school milk, in bottles? Mum and Dad certainly do, and also the thrill of being picked to be the ultimate teacher?s helper?.milk monitor! However, we soon discover that being given a daily bottle of the ?white stuff? didn?t always provide the benefits to a child?s health that it was supposed to! (song ? ?Drink Your Milk?)And what about learning to read? It used to be a much less-complicated affair, all done with those loveable and memorable characters, Janet and John. Forget phonemes, digraphs and compound-words, and enjoy a tongue-in-cheek reminder of when it was as simple as ABC! (song ? ?Pink For A Girl, Blue For A Boy?)As the family?s conversation draws to an end, Alice and James are filled with a new- found enthusiasm for going to school, and realise that thei

Andrew Oxspring: Santa's On Strike

Andrew Oxspring: Santa's On Strike

Christmas musical for 7-11 years. Running time 60 minutes approx. It's Christmas Eve and Santa's in a mood! He's seen too many episodes of Supernanny and thinks children don't deserve presents any more, so he goes on strike! As Mrs. Santa and the elves show him snapshots of family life, will he realise that Christmas is still a time of giving, caring and sharing? You bet he will, and so will your audience in this celebration of all that is good about Christmas... and about children! Plot SummaryIt's Christmas Eve at the North Pole, and frantic preparations are under way to get Santa ready for his annual 'evening out' (song - 'Ready For Christmas Day'). However, all is not as it should be. We hear from the elves, Eric, Elsie, Edgar, Edna, Esmée and Elmer, that Santa has gone on strike! Mrs Santa thinks this may be a passing problem due to his age, but Santa claims he has good reason for refusing to deliver presents to the children of the world. He has been watching 'Supernanny' and 'House of Tiny Tearaways' on TV and can't believe the behaviour he has witnessed (song - 'Santa's On Strike'). He thinks children no longer deserve a visit from him on Christmas Eve, and he won't be convinced otherwise.Desperate to save Christmas the Elves, Mrs Santa and Rudolf plead with him to change his mind, but Santa digs his heels in! Then the elves hit on a plan which might convince him that Children are not like those he's seen on TV, but that they can be really kind and giving, caring and sharing. Using the World-Wide-View-Satellite-Plasma-Screen-and-handset they tune in to the Wiseman family who are preparing for Christmas. They, and the audience, witness the comically frantic time families can have leading up to the big day, and see the children more than doing their bit to ease the pressure. (song - 'Pitching In, helping Out')Next we tune into the Shepherd family. Despite being settled into a Christmas Eve game of cards (which Dad is a little too eager to win!) the children are keen to make sure all the animals - pets, birds and even Santa's reindeer - are comfortable, catered-for and well looked-after. (song - 'Puppies Are Not Just For Christmas')The Elves then show Santa the King family. We see how the children are happy to sacrifice a cosy Christmas Eve watching DVDs in order to join others, outside in the cold, carol singing to raise money for the old folks' home. They also enjoy dragging their protesting parents outside for a sing-along too! (song - 'Lots of Fa-la-la')In a short optional scene Santa is shown that children haven't forgotten the true meaning of Christmas. We tune in to a nativity tableau, where, dressed as the traditional characters, a group of children perform a traditional Christmas song.If all this hasn't yet softened Santa's heart, then the final visit to the Starr family is bound to make him see that children can embrace the true spirit of Christmas. The Starr children feel sorry for their old neighbour, Mr Lewis, and take him round some Christmas cake (and a bottle of Dad's wine!), with the intention of keeping him company for a short while. Moved by his loneliness they go the whole hog and invite him to their house for Christmas! (song - 'Give A Little Time')Quite predictably this does the trick, and as Santa sobs into his beard he instructs the elves to load up the sleigh. In a rousing finale he adm

Andrew Oxspring/Mick Riddell: Primary School Christmas Musical

Andrew Oxspring/Mick Riddell: Primary School Christmas Musical

Christmas musical for 7-11 years (KS2)Running time 60 minutes approx. What goes into putting on a spectacular Christmas musical at school? Making costumes, painting scenery and learning lines aren't even the half of it! Join us on a truly rollercoaster ride, as we take a look behind the scenes at everything and everyone involved in making a school production happen. Through the eyes of nervous auditionees, frantic teachers, bopping TAs and camcorder-wielding parents, experience all the familiar highs and hiccups which always precede the big performance! With a lively script and seriously thumping good tunes guaranteed to have your audience dancing in the aisles, this musical is the ultimate way to celebrate Christmas at school!Plot summaryAs the opening song (Primary School Christmas Musical) finishes, Headteacher Miss Bright welcomes the audience. She explains that making it to tonight?s performance has been far from plain sailing, and that the trials and tribulations began as far back as September! In the first of a series of flashbacks we find ourselves witness to a staff meeting, where the Key Stage 1 teachers are relieved to learn that the enthusiastic Mrs Jolly, Mr Keen and Miss Swift will be taking over the reins of this year?s Christmas production, and plan to put on a ?glitzy? nativity musical with the Key Stage 2 children. (song ? Let?s Get This Show On The Road)Auditions follow, and in typical X-Factor style some children stun the teachers with their over-the-top efforts at securing lead roles! Nevertheless, the main parts are assigned and the children are informed they?ll be performing a nativity. Horrified that they will have to suffer the humiliation of wearing tea-towels and tinsel (something only infants should be doing), rumblings of mutiny can be felt amongst the cast. (song ? Don?t Wanna Do No Nativity) In spite of this lack of enthusiasm, preparations begin in earnest. Letters are sent home informing parents of their children?s involvement in the musical, and asking for help with such things as costumes. This leads to some typical outbursts of parental pride, pushiness and one-upmanship! (song ? Yours Sincerely)Next, the teaching assistants are drafted in to begin making scenery and assembling props. With skill and determination they set about their tasks??once they?ve had a cuppa! (song ? Get In The Groove)As the weeks pass, however, most people in school become fed up with the impact that the constant grind of rehearsals is having. The children complain that the hall is never free for PE, while the other KS2 teachers bemoan the fact that the children are exhausted and that there?s no work in their books to show parents on consultation evening. Even the kitchen staff feel put out ?rehearsals are constantly over-running and they?re unable to get into the hall early enough to set up for and serve lunch, resulting in frayed tempers and overcooked sausages! (song ? When All This Is over)Things come to a head during the dress rehearsal. In the face of un-finished scenery, an under-rehearsed script, ?diva? tantrums by lead actors and a general apathy and lack of effort all round, Mrs Jolly, Mr Keen and Miss Swift reach the end of their tethers! (song ? Rock-Bottom)In the midst of this chaos some unlikely heroic characters emerge, stepping up to the mark with passion and commitment to rally the disgruntled ensem

Andrew Oxspring: What Christmas Means To Me

Andrew Oxspring: What Christmas Means To Me

Christmas musical for 4-7 and 7-11 yearsRunning time 45 minutes (KS1) or 60 minutes (KS2) approx. This entertaining new musical takes a witty yet thoughtful look at the characters and events that shape our experiences of the festive season. Laugh at the blind panic of last-minute shoppers, Christmas day early-risers eager to get their hands on what?s under the tree, Christmas-cracker addicts, and the ageing Rich Clifford's annual challenge for the Christmas number one! But we also consider how Christmas came to be, and learn that all the trappings of our modern celebrations mean very little, unless we are able to share this time of year with our nearest and dearest. Plot summaryThe show begins with a resounding, whole-cast sing-a-long of the opening number - 'What Does Christmas Mean To You?' after which we find ourselves in the familiar surroundings of a classroom! Although it's the last few days of the school term, and the children think they should be taking it easy, the teacher still wants her class to produce one more piece of writing, entitled 'What Christmas Means To Me'. With the children's discussion of their ideas providing the continuity, we become witness to some truly entertaining seasonal delights! We all know what it's like, trying to do some last minute Christmas shopping, and the characters in our first scene sum up the experience beautifully, providing us with lots to laugh at! (song - 'I'd Rather Stay At Home')What would Christmas be without a festive song from an ageing pop star? Join daytime talk-show host, June Chandler, as she interviews the legendary 'Sir' Rich Clifford, who at sixty years old can still make his fans go week at the knees! Then sit back in a comfy chair and enjoy his not-quite-energetic performance, accompanied by his famous backing singers, the Bellafonté Sisters. (song - 'The Christmas Number One')How many children can resist the urge to get up at 3 o'clock on Christmas morning to see what presents Santa has left under the tree? Certainly not the one in this scene, which isn't surprising when the present in question is a shiny new games console! Mum and Dad's numerous attempts throughout the day to drag their youngster away from the TV screen are futile! And what about poor Grandma and Grandpa, who just want to sit on the settee and watch the Queen? (song - 'X-Box, Playstation or Wii')Christmas crackers - don't you just love them? Well, nobody loves them quite as much as the children in the next scene. Even when their relentless pursuit of 'bangs', paper hats and corny jokes threaten to ruin Christmas dinner, they still can't help themselves! And who can blame them! (song - 'Let's Pull Another Cracker')Next we are reminded of the reason why we celebrate Christmas - the Nativity. A traditional tableau is presented to a short narration of the bible story, and a meaningful new song - 'A Night To Remember'So, with lots to think about, the class conclude that Christmas can mean different things to different people, and our hopes for the 'big day' may not necessarily be the same as everyone else's. However, it is unanimously agreed that what really makes Christmas special is what many of us take for granted - the chance to spend some precious time with the people we love. (song - 'Just Being Together') After all, where's the fun in pulling a cracker on your own?
