Morton Gould 's Minute Plus Waltz Rag for Orchestra. In honour of their 75th anniversary, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra commissioned a number of composers who had written major works for them in the past to write short musical 'postcards'. ' My postcard is called Minute Plus Waltz Rag ; it's a slight take-off on The Minute Waltz but with the 'plus' that it's longer than a minute and combines a waltz with a rag pattern in 5/8 time. I wasn't conciously thinking of 1916 when I wrote it, but it does actually reflect a flavour of the music of that period ' - Morton Gould The first performance of this work took place on October 25, 1990, by The Baltimore Symphony with David Zinman as Conductor.

Robert Muczynski: Sonatina For Piano

Sonatina For Piano (1949) is a work for solo Piano, scored in three movements: Allegro Con Spirito – Andante Con Espressione – Allegro Vivace . It was the first published work of the American composer and pianist Robert Muczynski (1929 - 2010), who also performed it at his Master’s degree recital in 1952. Muczynski composed all his Piano works at the keyboard, with the intention of performing them – he disliked academic analysis of his music and wanted people to just “let it be”. As a result, his music is imbued with a character and personality of its own. Often dismissed as “traditional” by critics, his works remain highly playable and popular today.

Samuel Barber: Excursions For The Piano Op.20

Each of these four short pieces is based on a folk tune or idiom and captures some slice of Americana. The first piece depicts the hustle and bustle of the city with catchy, tricky rhythms, jazzy playfulness, and motoric drive. The second piece, "In Slow Blues Tempo," has a bluesy manner to be sure, but is also sassy and spiky. The third Excursion, a set of variations on The Streets of Laredo, is mainly a lullaby. The final piece (Allegro molto) is a barn dance, somewhat in the spirit of Copland's from Rodeo, but jazzier and more amusingly mischievous.

Philip Ramey: Fanfare Sonata For Solo Trumpet In C

The Fanfare Sonata, one of the rather too few works for solo trumpet, takes its name from the fanfare-like gestures which are the basis of much of its melodic and rhythmic material. In the opening Moderato there is an incantational first theme and an angularly lyric, rather wistful second theme. These themes reappear in the slow movement (Andante tenebroso) which is a development of both old and new material. The finale (Allegro burlesco) is sprightly, propulsive and high spirited until a final radical shift in mood takes place and the piece ends with a harsh, declamatory coda.

This work reflects a young and passionate artist, who is greatly influenced by traditional Norwegian folk music.This sonata is in four movements, with a beautiful transitional third movement, which separates the lamenting second movement Andante Molto from the rousing finale Molto Allegro. Beethoven: Notturno For Viola And Piano Op.42

The Op.42 Notturno for Viola and Piano is an arrangement of the 1796-97 Serenade in D, Op.8, arranged by F. X. Kleinheinz (with Beethoven's approval) for Viola and Piano. The piece is comprised of seven short movements. The first is a simple march, while the second is an Adagio. The ensuing minuet is attractive and proves to be an interlude between two Adagios, of which the second alternates effectively with a contrasting Allegro molto Scherzo section. There follows an attractive Polonaise and a theme-and-variations marked Andante. A reprise of the opening march concludes the work. Overall, it is a delightful minor composition in Beethoven's vast output.

For the occasion of the coronation of King George II and Queen Caroline, which took place in Westminster Abbey on October 11, 1727, Handel wrote four splendid anthems and personally supervised their performance which was, according to all reports, one of great magnificence. The four anthems were enthusiastically received, and one or more of them has been performed at every British coronation since 1727. Anthem No. 2 ('The King Shall Rejoice'), although less well-known than Anthem No. 1, is an equally splendid example of Handel's ceremonial style - what Burney has affectionately termed his 'big bow-bow manner'. Giuseppe Verdi: Simon Boccanegra (Libretto)

Verdi's 'Simon Boccanegra' was based on the play of the same name by Antonio Gutierrez - the author also of 'Il Trovatore'. It was adapted into a libretto by Francesco Piave and Giuseppe Montanelli, but this resulted in an almost incomprehensible plot. Verdi set about a substantial revision of the text with Arrigo Boito, and it is this version which stands today. This edition contains the original Italian text plus an English version by Mary Ellis Peltz.
