In honour of their 75th anniversary, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra commissioned a number of composers who had written major works for them in the past to write short musical 'postcards'. Morton Gould said of his:'My postcard is called Minute Plus Waltz Rag; it's a slight take-off on 'The Minute Waltz' but with the 'plus' that it's longer than a minute and combines a waltz with a rag pattern in 5/8 time. I wasn't consciously thinking of 1916 when I wrote it but it does actually reflect a flavour of that time.' This is the Schirmer edition of the Score and Parts.

Wallingford Riegger: Concerto For Piano And WoodWind Quintet (Score/Parts)

Wallingford Riegger (1885-1961) was an American cellist and composer, who is noted as being one of the principle proponents of Serialism and the twelve-tone technique in America. His Concerto (Op. 53) was commissioned in 1953 by the Koussevitzky Music Foundation, and first performed at the Library of Congress. It is scored for Piano and Wind Quintet - Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Horn, and Bassoon - and is comprised of three movements: Allegro - Andante - Allegro Molto . Receiving critical acclaim as soon as it was released, the Concerto cleverly blends atonal and diatonic elements, creating an animated, condensed modern work, that has unfairly fallen out of the repertoire.

Ernest Bloch: Israel Symphony For Orchestra (Score)

This symphony, from Bloch's 'Jewish Period' evokes two Jewish traditional celebrations, 'Yom Kippur' (Day of Atonement) and 'Succoth' (Celebration of Harvest). It does this not by using traditional Jewish melodies or musical features; but explores Judaism spiritually. Bloch himself provided notes for the New York Philarmonic 1943 performance of the symphony: 'Though a single unit, the symphony falls into three sections. A slow introduction, Adagio molto ('Prayer in the Desert') is immediately followed by the Allegro agitato ('Yom Kippur'), with a main theme of bold, barbaric character...A short transition leads into the second part, Moderato ('Succoth') which, after a fierce climax, brings in the voice...This second part of the work is more contemplative, serene, a kind of prayer.' Arnold Schoenberg: String Quartet No. 4 (Score)

Schoenberg composed his Fourth String Quartet, Op. 37, on a commission from Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge. The four movements of the quartet are based on a single, twelve-note row, although this is fairly free. The first movement is in an abstract sonata form. Transitions are generally built around a hesitant, chromatically sighing theme that first appears in the first violin. Marked Comodo (leisurely), the second movement is an intermezzo in A-B-A form. The recitative-like main theme of the third movement first appears in unison, after which individual instruments begin to break away with their own lines. Variation technique is prominent in the rondo finale, marked Allegro - transformations of the main theme are so great that it is occasionally difficult to recognize its return. This is the Schirmer edition of the Score to this work.

Gunther Schuller: Concerto For Trumpet And Chamber Orchestra (Trumpet/Piano)

This Trumpet Concerto was commissioned by the Ford Foundation for Gerard Schwarz. It is a unique work; a delightful palette of succulent and colourful scoring for both soloist and orchestra. The piece has attractive melodies and harmonies, uses several types of mutes for colour and is written in Schuller?s personal pan-stylistic musical language. The first movement opens with a mysterious, exotic-sounding Introduction marked calmo, leading to a masculine yet jaunty Allegro comodo, the trumpet being assigned characteristic semiquaver passage work. The movement also includes some beautiful lyrical and rhythmically simple passages. The second movement is a Scherzo-Trio-Scherzo at a vivace tempo. A short, drawn out, slow third movement concludes with a challenging full-page cadenza. Here, the trumpet is required to play very rapid double-tonguing patterns on semiquaver passages over a repeated quaver ostinato, reminiscent of the first movement. The final movement is virtually a pyrotechnical fireworks display of musically interesting, idiomatic, thrilling passage work. This movement demonstrates once again Schuller's extraordinary understanding and exploitation of the capabilities of the instruments. This edition contains a Piano reduction (by Robert Waddell) of the Concerto for rehearsal purposes only.
