Boyce Heart Of Oak Satb And Tonic Solfa

Heart Of Oak is the official march of the Royal Navy. It was written in 1859, an Annus Mirabilis for British armed forces, by the composer William Boyce , with words by the actor, poet and playwright David Garrick (1717-1779). It has been arranged for SATB choir by the composer and pedagogue Eaton Faning (1850-1927). Dr. William Boyce (1711-1779) was a British composer and editor. He was a choirboy at St Paul's Cathedral, and served as organist at several churches before being appointed Master of the King's Musick in 1755 and Organist of the Chapel Royal in 1758. His editions of English Church music are still widely used today.

Henry Purcell (1659-1695) held numerous appointments at the Royal Court and Westminster Abbey, and is considered by many to be the greatest ever English-born composer. His prolific work covered all fields: orchestral, ecclesiastical, operatic, theatrical, incidental, and chamber music were all enriched by his output. The Opera Ottone was written in 1723 for the Royal Academy of Music. The aria La Speranza e Guinta was chosen from it by Arthur Somervell as one of ten arias he arranged for Piano and Voice. It was re-titled Spring , with new English lyrics that bear no resemblance to the translation. It is printed here in two different keys: in D for Low Voice and E for High Voice.

Thomson Rule Britannia

When 18th century British composer Thomas Arne included his song Rule, Britannia! in a masque based on the life of Alfred the Great that was presented at Cliveden, the country home of Frederick, Prince of Wales, he could not have imagined that more than two hundred seventy years later his ditty would be known throughout the British Isles and beyond. Rule, Britannia! is widely used in the Royal Navy and British Army and is featured each year at the Last Night of the Proms in the Royal Albert Hall as a national sing-along.At the time of writing, the Dutch actually ‘ruled the waves,’ so this song was more an exhortation than a status report. The lyrics were also a statement of civil liberty. Since Cromwell’s time, Britain had had a standing army which could be turned against the native population. A standing navy, however, existed solely to protect the nation from invaders, protecting a free populace.Rule, Britannia! has been quoted extensively by other composers, among them Beethoven, Wagner, Strauss, and Arthur Sullivan. Thomas Arne also penned a version of God Save The King which came to be the British national anthem.This version is arranged by contemporary composer and friend Eaton Fanning, who made changes to the famous semiquaver flourishes.

Ieuan Rees-Davies (1894-1967) was a Welsh musician, lecturer and pedagogue, who studied at the Royal Academy of Music before becoming a school teacher and examiner. He is credited with doing much to improving the state of musical education in schools, instituting several programmes of training for music teachers, and publishing several articles. Transposition at the Keyboard was published in 1933, and was the first of several books he wrote on musical theory and music teaching. He also wrote several part songs; he is often best remembered for the song Close Thine Eyes , written for a Welsh Male Voice Choir.

Maurice Jacobson (1896-1976) was a British composer, pianist and adjudicator. He studied composition with Charles Villiers Stanford and Gustav Holst at the Royal College of Music, before joining J. Curwen and Sons - a music publishing form that he remained with for almost fifty years, eventually becoming director and chairman.

Morris Dance is a piece for Piano duet. First published in 1944, it was one of the many popular duets that the composer wrote, partly for his own use and performance, and partly for public benefit and enjoyment. Alec Rowley (1892-1958) was an English composer, organist and teacher. As well as his frequent Piano recitals and broadcasts, he gained renown through his large-scale works performed at the Promenade Concerts, but most of his compositions are miniatures and small-scale works appropriate for amateur forces. Having studied at the Royal Academy of Music, he later taught at Trinity College, London for nearly forty years.

The Woman of Samaria (Op. 44) was a sacred cantata written for the Birmingham Triennial Music Festival in 1867. It was written in the style of Medelssohn’s Elijah , which had premiered at the same festival twenty years earlier. The chorus Abide With Me is a setting of the poem by Henry Francis Lyte for SATB choir and Piano accompaniment. Sir William Sterndale Bennett (1816-1875) was an English composer, pianist and conductor. He entered the Royal Academy of Music, studying Violin, Piano, and composition. He spent time in Germany with Mendelsohn and Schumann, before becoming Professor of Music at the University of Cambridge and later Principal of the RAM.

The Shepherd's Cradle Song is a German lullaby, based on the 1817 work Des Hirten Wiegenlied by Karl Leuner . It was published in 1912 with music arranged by Charles Macpherson and English translation by Arthur Foxton Ferguson . It is presented here in Tonic Solfa notation. Charles Macpherson (1870-1927) was a British organist and composer. He was a chorister at St Pauls Cathedral, and later became organist there. In between, he studied at the Royal Academy of Music, where he later served as Professor of Composition. Arthur Foxton Furgeson was a British translator and singer. He founded the Folk Song Quartet, for whom the Shepherd's Cradle Song was written.

Oh! Fie, Shepherd, Fie is a traditional comic song, which tells the bawdy story of a young girl who meets a shepherd in a meadow one day, and tries in vain to resist his advances. The most popular melody was recorded by William Defesch (Willem de Fesch; 1687-1761), a Dutch composer and conductor who spent most of his career in London. It has been arranged here for Voice and Piano by Elisabeth Poston (1905-1987), a British composer and musician who studied at the Royal Academy of Music and later worked for both the BBC and the Arts Council. She is best remembered for her setting of the Christmas carol Jesus Christ the Apple Tree.

His own composition always displayed technical mastery, and for a while he was a great figure in the world of British musical theatre.

This short benediction, set to familiar words from Corinthians, Thessalonians and the first book of Peter, is an enduring favourite. Informally known as the Navy blessing or the Scottish blessing, the words are sensitively enhanced by Shaw’s tune and harmonies, and can create an inspiring, meditative finale. Composer, conductor and producer Martin Shaw was of the Holst and Vaughan Williams generation of composers that was key in reviving public interest in the work of Purcell and was also a co-founder of the Royal School of Church Music. He once toured Europe as conductor to dancer Isadora Duncan and was briefly engaged to the daughter of theatrical star Ellen Terry. His works number more than three hundred published pieces. Arranged for SATB and organ, duration 2½ minutes.
