Angels and Shepherds

Based on two carols, one Polish, one French and conceived for use with children. There is a lesson plan included which suggests things to isolate, comment on, and practice. But the piece would be appropriate and enjoyable for any level 2 three octave group. (A few outside bells out of a five octave set are used as well.)

Magnificat and Nunc dimittis

Written for the Houston Children's Chorus, this spirited Mag and Nunc are thematically related despite their varying moods (Resolute, Comforting, Energetic). The difficulty level comes from the contemporary but tonal harmonic language, florid lines, and precise rhythms. The organ punctuates and supports throughout. Largely in unison, with some two-part passages and a final chord in three parts.

Hark, Ten Thousand Harps and Voices

Part of our Presbyterian Association of Musicians Series, this hymn-anthem is based on a new tune of the composer's own devising. The 1806 text is given a lyrical treatment rather than the usual rollicking one, and the result is expressive and effective. The first stanza is in unison, the second split between TB and SA alternating. The third stanza is set for SATB voices. The fourth and final stanza has lower voices in unison and sopranos descanting. Let Us Go Rejoicing : Fanfare, Introit, and Procession for the Dedication of a Church

Peter Latona's setting of the Entrance Antiphon for the Dedication of a Church is a perfect balance of solemnity and festivity. It opens with a brass and organ fanfare (echoed later by organ alone) and a chant-like choral section. Then the antiphon unfolds—easily sung by the assembly, while the verses offer some "meat" for SATB choir. Brass Quintet is used well throughout, supporting the antiphons and decorating the verses. Appropriate also for church anniversaries, the Feast of the Dedication of St. John Lateran, Christ the King C, or other festive liturgies. Experienced church musician Daniel Burton brings creativity and practicality to bear in this delightful set of three tunes. The organ parts are of medium difficulty, the brass parts less so, leading to an easy put-together and very satisfying result.

Variations and Fugue On A Christmas Carol

This score is based on the old British Carol "I saw three ships." There are seven variations preceding the fugue. After the theme has been stated, the first two variations extend the theme: the third variation introduces the pedals. The next three variations are in the style of Baroque genres: the fourth variation is a noël written as an homage to Daquin: the fifth variation is a figured chorale, in which the chorale Von Himmel hoch, da komm ich her makes its first appearance: and the sixth is a Handelian rigaudon. The seventh variation is a “carillion” in which Von Himmel hoch reappears. After a dramatic, dissonant chord, the score concludes with a chorale fugue during whichVon Himmel hoch appears in the pedal. Composed for and dedicated to David Higgs, in celebration of his twenty-five years of teaching at the Eastman School of Music. Duration: 6:45.

Two Pieces for Organ : Prelude in D and Exultation

Prelude in D, written for organist David Ball, is set in a languid 3/4 with a lyrical motif in the melody which passes through several harmonic developments but is consistently soothing and satisfying. Registration suggestions might be for a large instrument, but the elegance of the writing insures success on a smaller instrument as well. Duration: 3:30 Exultation was commissioned by Choir and Organ magazine for the dedication of the Miller-Scott Organ at Saint Thomas Church Fifth Avenue. It is a short, fiery postlude or recital piece. Of the two pieces, the difficulty level we've selected definitely comes from this final one.
