Mitt hjerte alltid vanker - Fantasi : Fantasy on My Heart remains in Wonder

This arrangement was commissioned by B3 (The Bergen Woodwind Ensemble). B3 is a large woodwind ensemble located in Bergen with a mix of professional and amateur players. My Heart Remains in Wonder is a well-known Christmas hymn in Scandinavia. I wanted my version to be different to the traditional hymn tune style in which it is normally performed. One day I was outside walking and this idea came to me: an ostinato-like, mechanical skeleton of arpeggio semiquavers on which I could 'hang' the melody. However, I also wanted to do the melody line a bit different. The inspiration for this comes from folk music and the way fiddlers hardly ever lift their bow off the strings when they play. Because of this, it is important that the melody is played in a very sostenuto style in this arrangement. The harmonies lie somewhere between jazz and folk music with a little nod towards Grieg (himself heavily influenced by folk music) in the slow middle section.

Waltz for Debby

“Waltz for Debby” was written by American jazz pianist and composer Bill Evans (1929-1980). It was heard for the first time on his 1956 debut record “New Jazz Conceptions”. This recording made the tune his most famous one, included on several later recordings both for solo piano and his usual trio format. It also became a favorite on almost all his concerts. The tune is a kind of a musical portrait of Evans’ niece, Debby Evans. In Scandinavia, Swedish singer Monica Zetterlund made it popular for a wider audience through her 1964-recording accompanied by Evans and his trio. On this recording, the song was renamed “Monicas vals”.

The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child celebrated 30 years in 2019 and the Norwegian Directorate for Children, Youth and Family affairs commissioned Children's March for the celebration on November 20th in Oslo. School bands is a good example of the rights children have to play, learning and leisure regardless of background. The FNS Children's Convention was adopted by the UN General Assembly on 20 November 1989. The Convention is in the world community the most recognized of all UN conventions. Norway ratified the Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1991 and in 2003 the parliament made the Convention into Norwegian law. The march is easy to play, catchy and willfit well as a concert or street march in both large and small bands. In accordance with the Convention on the Rights of the Child, available voices for stringed instruments have also been made so that other young people can play along. Let more children join in and hum on the tune in the trio part of the march.

Melodier fra Trost i taklampa

«Trost i taklampa» is a Norwegian musical based on a novel by Alf Prøysen. The great music composed by Finn Ludt is masterfully orchestrated for Concert Band by Øivind Westby, former basstrombonist with The Norwegian Radio Orchestra. The Norwegian lyrics on «Snekkersvemarsjen» is optional and may be omitted.

Purple Lips

«Purple Lips» is a nice summer ballad, inspired by the sun, summer, swimming and beach life. The title reflects the color the children get on their lips after bathing a little too long without taking breaks on land to warm up. The parts are written in a way so that also the youngest and least-experienced musicians can play this piece well.

A lazy sunny Saturday afternoon on the terrace with the sound of bumble-bees in the plants are the composers inspiration for this piece. Look for good style in every parts, play it cool and laid-back.

Apparatus musico-organisticus (1690) : twelve toccatas, four independent pieces

Georg Muffat might be considered one of the most important German composers of the late seventeenth century. This reputation rests on the string concerti he published but these do not belie the importance of his only publication of organ music, the 1690 Apparatus musico-organisticus. It contains not only his twelve toccatas, but also four pieces that are playable on either the organ or harpsichord. These are among the most substantial works to have been composed before JS Bach, and are rich in technical virtuosity, rhetorical design and harmonic and melodic invention.

Noëls, O Filii, Chansons de Saint Jacques : Stabat Mater et Carillons c 1714 and 1724

he only publication of the priest-organist of Saint-Barthélemy in Paris, Pierre Dandrieu’s noëls were written for use at Christmas, with occasional pieces for use at Easter and other feasts. The book contains 42 pieces or remarkable variety based on such popular songs as À la venue de noël and the substantial Chanson de Saint-Jacques. his Cantando critical edition by musicologist Jon Baxendale examines Dandrieu’s life and provides an overview of musical life in Paris’s ecclesiastical institutions and provides notes on performance practice and registration in both English and French.

From Both Sides Now : Instrumental Solo with Band

“From Both Sides Now”, written in 1967, is one of the most famous songs by Canadian singer/songwriter Joni Mitchell. A novel by Saul Bellow, “Henderson the Rain King”, was her inspiration to write the song. She has recorded the song twice: first in 1969 on the album “Clouds” and again in 2000 on the album “Both Sides Now”. The latest recording feature a more orchestrated, jazz-inspired version of the song. This arrangement is written in “quasi-tango” style. There are three solo-options included: Bb-Inatruments, Eb-Instruments and C-Instruments (Bass Clef).

Dance Monkey

Dance Monkey is a catchy song by the Australian musician Toni Watson a.k.a. Tones and I. Tones and I explains that the song's lyrics are about the relationship she had with her audience when she was busking on the streets of Australia: "I wrote this song when I was busking, and it's about the pressure that I felt to always be entertaining people.” The video for the song has also been a tremendous success. As of March 2020, the video has been streamed more than 825 mill times on YouTube.

This arrangement of "Born to be wild" is based on the song by the band Steppenwolf recorded late in the 1960's. Young musicians can be featured as soloists, using their voice and the instrument. The arrangement also works very well without soloists.

La Ville Blanche et Bleue

This piece is a kind of flashback on my experiences of my time as an amateur musician in my hometown of Gjøvik (often called “The White City”). It was at a time when the expressionas had to be created by myself and the music performed by the band (“The Liverflower”) was a kind of a voyage of discovery for a young boy. A lot of the music I played at that time has shaped me as composer and musician. I remember the beautiful melodies and the rhythmic passages with a nostalgic smile. Maybe this music can make an impression on new generations of band musicians.

In Charge - Concert March

In Charge was commissioned by the Home Guard Band of Eksjö to honour Thomas Samuelsson, whose efforts with the orchestra have been of great significance. He was a driving person within Swedish military music and furthermore project manager for Eksjö International Tattoo. Thomas worked at Eksjö Energy and the title of this work hints both to his occupation and his administrative leadership in the band. The first part of this concert march concentrates a lot on syncopation, while the second part is more robust with a traditional and lyrical trio part. In Charge was premiered by the Home Guard Band of Eksjö on the 22th of December 2018, conducted by Maria Sandberg.

Mammoth Mountain Suite

Mammoths were a family of elephants that, with one exception, died out at the end of the last ice age. Their closest living relative is the Asian elephant. In many places in the world one can find mammoth remains. In Norway (especially in Gudbrandsdalen), 20 discoveries of teeth and skeletal remains have been made after mammoths that lived here between 40,000 and 50,000 years ago. On cave paintings and carvings you can see many pictures of mammoths with other animals. Pictures of killed mammoths have also been found with humans. Mammoth Moutain Suite describes a bunch of hunters looking for mammoths. Imagine the majestic animals, what it felt like to see the herd in themountains and what it sounded like when the 6 ton heavy and 3.5 meter tall mammoths were on the run.
