Paul Lester: In Search Of... Pharrell Williams

Paul Lester: In Search Of... Pharrell Williams

In Search Of... Pharrell Williams is the fascinating account of one of the most revered singers and songwriters in the music business today. Working tirelessly to write and produce some of the biggest hits in the last 20 years before coming to the forefront as a singer and songwriter in the early 21st century, this is the story of a modern day musical genius. 2013-14 was dubbed by Oprah Winfrey as 'The Year of Pharrell', due to his incomparable stamp on popular music at the time. With Robin Thicke's 'Blurred Lines', Daft Punk's 'Get Lucky' and his own solo single 'Happy' dominating the charts and the radio waves, you couldn't avoid hearing  Pharrell Williams'  soulful voice and catchy music wherever you went. In this unique portrayal of a master of modern music, Paul Lester  tells the story of the boy with humble beginnings who became a multitalented megastar. As part of the producer-duo The Neptunes, Pharrell Williams  helped a number of pop stars have a string of hits throughout the 2000s, including Britney Spears, Kelis and Nelly. Simultaneously, Pharrell  enjoyed success with his rap-rock band N*E*R*D, producing hit after hit while still maintaining other projects. While continuing to produce and write for other artists, Pharrell stepped more and more into the limelight, co-writing and singing his own tunes, many of which appear on the list of bestselling songs of the century so far. For fans of Pharrell , this astonishing biography tells the story of the singer, songwriter, producer, designer, philanthropist and entrepreneur through engaging interviews with the man himself, as well as his closest musical collaborators. If you are new to Pharrell 's music, Paul Lester 's book is an interesting account of modern music's true Renaissance man, a hugely creative talent who has had a fascinatingly fruitful career.

Richard Rodney Bennett: The Complete Musician

Richard Rodney Bennett: The Complete Musician

Sir Richard Rodney Bennett, in the enormous diversity of his activities, is arguably the most complete musician of all time. Not only does he have a remarkable 300 commissioned concert works to his credit, which have established him among the leading British twentieth-century composers, yet at the same time, with supreme success, he has also contrived to lead several completely different musical lives. For some, he is the ultimate exponent of 'crossover', as epitomised in his remarkable Concerto for Stan Getz and concert works for Cleo Laine. Others remember him as a concert pianist with a special enthusiasm for pioneering contemporary music, his partnerships with Susan Bradshaw, Jane Manning and Barry Tuckwell being particularly notable. Meanwhile, he also has over 70 film and television scores to his credit, the many classic titles ranging from Murder on the Orient Express and Far From the Madding Crowd to Equus and Four Weddings and a Funeral. For cabaret and jazz club devotees, he is, again, something completely different: one of the finest and most knowledgeable of all exponents of the Great American Songbook, a much-in-demand singer and accompanist over the past thirty-five years, and, as such, the stage partner of some of the most glamorous performers in the business. This, then, is a book about a uniquely gifted musician. It is also a study of a most engaging personality and a fascinatingly complex human being.Anthony Meredith, whose two previous collaborations with co-researcher Paul Harris were the highly praised biographies of Malcolm Arnold and Malcolm Williamson, has been a widely published writer over the past twenty-five years. He is a member of MCC, a Friend of Covent Garden and Northern Ballet. His co-researcher, Paul Harris, is a leading music educationalist, well-known for his seminars, workshops and masterclasses, with over 500 books to his name.

Looking Through You: Rare & Unseen Photographs From The Beatles Book Archive

Looking Through You: Rare & Unseen Photographs From The Beatles Book Archive

Looking Through You features over 300 Rare And Unseen Photographs taken from the archives of The Beatles Book, a monthly magazine devoted to the Fab Four. A unique publication, the stunning images captured by photographer Leslie Bryce are collected in this  limited edition numbered slipcase edition , featuring an exclusive facsimile of the 1964 calendar. When publisher Sean O'Mahony launched 'The Beatles Book', he negotiated unprecedented access to the band at their performances, backstage, in the recording studio and at home. Boasting news of the band, articles and exclusive photography, the contents of The Beatles Book were devoured by fans, increasing its circulation from an initial 80,000 copies to a readership in the millions at its peak. Thousands of photographs were taken, but only a fraction of these were ever used, and even then they were often retouched or altered. In Looking Through You,  over 300 of the most beautiful photographs from the magazine's six-year life have been taken from the original negatives, resulting in a portrait of a band that's at once historically significant and still exciting even half a century later. From small gigs in British theatres to TV appearances and foreign tours, their meteoric rise to fame is captured here through a wonderful lens, making this book a visual treat as well as a story of the wildly successful Beatles Book. Featuring a foreword from Jo Adams (daughter of Sean O'Mahony), an insightful introduction by Andy Neill and some fascinating information to accompany the photographs, Looking Through You  is an important visual record of a musical phenomenon. This individually numbered limited edition of 3,000 copies also includes a facsimile of The Beatles Fan Club calendar of 1964.
