Michael Bradley: Teenage Kicks - My Life As An Undertone

Rick Buckler: That's Entertainment - My Life In The Jam

Rick Buckler: That's Entertainment - My Life In The Jam

During their golden years of 1977 to 1982, The Jam 's frontman Paul Weller was their outspoken leader, but it was drummer Rick Buckler who was the beating heart of the band, and it is his fascinating story that is told in his autobiography, That's Entertainment: My Life In The Jam,  replete with insights into his life and music. From his childhood in the 1950s to his musical growth to becoming the backbone of one of the most successful punk rock British bands, the story goes on to detail his post-Jam musical career, incorporating a number of other musicians in his continuous projects. Featuring some incredible photographs from Buckler 's personal archives, in-depth details about his personal and musical life, as well as before-unknown information about his projects since The Jam, That's Entertainment: My Life In The Jam  presents a great biography that is an antidote to many of the other popular music books out there. As The Jam rose to fame in 1977, their blend of rock, punk, mod and new-wave made them a musical force to be reckoned with. Weller's in-your-face attitude and songwriting combined with Bruce Foxton's powerful bass lines and Buckler's brilliant drumming to create a sound that has been often replicated but rarely matched. This book is the story of the man at the back of the band, absent from the bitter quarrels but always looking forward from the middle, both physically on stage and metaphorically.  There have been a vast number of other books written about The Jam, but none come close to the intimacy and personality of this portrayal of a pioneering band and their interesting story. Through Rick Buckler 's eyes, That's Entertainment: My Life In The Jam  chronicles the highlights of their heyday and the low points of the dissolution of friendships. It's a brilliant read if you're a fan of The Jam, or even at all interested in popular music, this Rick Buckler  autobiography has it all.

Look Wot I Dun: Don Powell - My Life In Slade

Look Wot I Dun: Don Powell - My Life In Slade

Look Wot I Dun: Don Powell - My Life In Slade is the story of Slade’s powerhouse drummer Don Powell whose life was shattered by a horrific car crash at the height of the glam rock group’s fame. Slade’s fame made Don Powell a star, but after a serious crash in 1973, even the most casual fan knew more about him than he could remember himself. Lucky to survive, the accident lead to alcoholism, financial woes and a life of reckless promiscuity. Powell did, however, return to being the rhythmic powerhouse behind Slade's catchy anthems until their split in 1991, before he moved on to other fascinating projects. Don Powell ’s friend, the Danish author Lise Lyng Falkenberg, has pieced together his fragmented life through interviews with the man himself, extracts from the famous diaries and insights from friends and colleagues like Gene Simmons, Francis Rossi, Andy Scott and Suzi Quatro to compile this in-depth and detailed insight into the man and the legend. Now sober, happily married and living in Denmark, Don Powell has survived his rise to the pinnacle of rock fame and fall to the depths of grief and amnesia. His intensely personal story is a unique document of his struggle to rediscover himself and rebuild his life after his stellar celebrity status suddenly turned into tragic loss and despair. Fans of Slade and hard rock in general will be continually intrigued and fascinated by the story of a musician's tragic accident, and his journey to rebuild his life. Plagued by amnesia, Don Powell  has praised author Lise Falkenberg for piecing his diaries together into a coherent narrative whose twists and turns are fitting for a life dominated by rises and falls.

Fingerpicking Blues Guitar In The Key Of G

Fingerpicking Blues Guitar In The Key Of G

Fingerpicking Blues Guitar is a never ending study full of surprises and discoveries. Each key of the Guitar offers new sounds and textures. A blues played in the key of C sounds world's apart from a blues played in the keys of A, G, D or E. This series focuses on a single key for each lesson. The key of G offers specific advantages. It is ideal for the alternating bass technique i.e. Mississippi John Hurt's style of playing.   In this lesson, we start by learning an arrangement of Marshall Owens' 1930s recording of Try Me One More Time . This was originally played in an Open G tuning but is here arranged in standard tuning using a John Hurt approach. Not all blues from the 1920s and 1930s were fingerpicked. Jim Jackson was a popular Memphis songster who basically strummed his Guitar. But his repertoire was full of wonderful songs. Stefan Grossman has taken his Wild About My Loving and has tried to keep the original feel by combining a strum approach intermingled with fingerpicking the melody. Little Hat Jones was an amazing fingerstyle bluesman.   His Bye Bye Baby Blues was played in the key of G. Here his version is fully transcribed note for note. Blind Boy Fuller recorded many blues in the key of G. In this lesson we'll tackle three of his arrangements: Baby Let Me Lay It On You, Baby Quit Your Low Down Ways and I Crave My Pigmeat . We study his playing note for note but also explore variations. By the end of this lesson you will know six great tunes and have an insight in to fingerpicking blues in the key of G.   A detailed tab/music booklet is included as a PDF file on the DVD. Each tune is taught phrase by phrase and played slowly on a split-screen. As well, the original old recordings are included in the Bonus Audio section. Titles include: Try Me One More Time, Wild About My Loving, Bye Bye Baby Blues, Baby Let Me Lay It On You, Baby Quit Your Low Down Ways and I Crave My Pigmeat . 100 minutes • Level 2/3 • Detailed tab/music PDF file on the DVD.
