This CD is a ?greatest hits? collection of recordings by Ole ?Fessor? Lindgreen?s Big City Band, made between 1973 and 1984. This heavily blues- and rhythm & blues-oriented collection (15 tunes/72 min.) includes four original tunes by band members and a couple of soul numbers - ?Hi Heel Sneakers? and ?Why Am I Treated So Bad?? ? along with the rest of the tasty repertoire. The musicians are among Denmark?s finest jazz and blues musicians, including the virtuoso trumpet work of Finn Otto Hansen, the burning, soulful tenor sax of Steen Vig, the funky driving beat of drummer Thorkild Møller and the exuberant trombone-playing of Fessor, himself. There are also two famous guests on the CD: ?Mighty Flea? Connors on trombone, and three vocal tunes by the famous blues performer Champion Jack Dupree. Although some of this music was recorded thirty years ago, the great musicianship and enthusiasm - plus the fine, blusey repertoire ? make this timeless music that swings like crazy. Then he was in the army for two years and then back to Stan Kenton untill 1952. The Piano Player is a fantastic CD that focuses on and demonstrates the unique Piano talents of Duke Ellington. This previously unreleased material includes works which were unusual for Ellington, such as The River Ballad Suite which was composed for a Ballet by Alvin Ailey. These performances were recorded during eight different sessions in New York, Paris and Tokyo between 1961 and 1971 and includes thirteen Piano solo plus three more accompanied by Wild Bill Davis ?Organ, Joe Benjamin ?Bass and Rufus Jones-Drums who together with Ellington form a formidable band. These are all Duke Ellington originals, most of which hadn?t been recorded before these sessions. Recordings of the Duke playing solo are very rare so this collection is a real treat for Ellington fans, once again proving he was a true stylist, innovator and exciting originator on the piano.

Duke Jordan settled down in Copenhagen in the autumn of 1973 and remained here to his death. He was mainly known for his work with Charlie Parker. The idea for this solo CD came about when he played at the Elsinore Jazz Festival in1992. The session was taped but the sound was not very good, so he recorded the whole session over again in a studio in Copenhagen and the result you can hear on this CD. Duke was a very good composer and he plays 6 of his own compositions on the CD.

Carsten Dahl: Effata - Solo Piano

Carsten Dahl is a multi-faceted pianist - and quite likely the best and most creative pianist in Europe. In 2000 he recorded The Butterfly Dream, his first solo CD for Storyville. There were 14 tracks on the CD, named "1", "2", "3", etc., except for the 13th tune that was named "The Butterfly Dream". A decade later he is repeating the concept with this new CD - this time 15 numbers that he calls "EFFATA 1", "EFFATA 2", etc., except for track 15, which is titled "GLORIE" and is dedicated to his wife, the saxophonist Christina Dahl. The Aramaic word EFFATA means "be opened" and is one that informs the artist.Listening to the CD, one thinks of Keith Jarrett and Cecil Taylor and their style of free improvisation, or Mary Lou Williams, who had the same ideas with her album Zodiac Suite.
