Frank Rosolino: In Copenhagen

Frank Rosolino managed to squeeze in trips abroad for specific tours. In the Summer of 1978 he did what was to be his last solo tour in Europe. He came to Copenhagen late in August to play at Slukefter in the Tivoli Gardens which is where the present CD was recorded. He was backed by Thomas Clausen Trio and with no restrictions on length of performances the quartet was allowed to expand the chosen pieces. Blue Daniel was Frank?s best known composition. It has the unusual chorus length of 14 bars. Waltz For Diane is played in waltz time. There is plenty of fast slide work here. How About You? Is nicely relaxed and serves as a prelude to a marathon blues performance using Thelonious Monk?s Straight No Chaser as the theme. There Is No Greater Love uses short, punching phrases during the solo to add impetus.

Rags And Marches is a collaboration between two of the top European traditional jazz bands from the 1950s: Papa Bue’s Viking Jazzband from Denmark and Graham Stewart And His New Orleans Band from England. Moreover, the CD is a very unusual compilation, since all the tunes are either rags (ragtime) or marches – two musical genres, essential to traditional jazz, which not only pre-date the advent of jazz music, but also have their roots in the 19th century European musical tradition. The twenty tunes here were all recorded in Copenhagen between 1958 and 1962 – 14 numbers with Papa Bue , two with Graham Stewart’s band and four where the two bands join forces. This CD is a goldmine for traditional jazz lovers to go back to where it all began!

The music on this double-CD (19 tunes, 1hour 45 min.) has never been previously released; it was recorded live in Zurich, Switzerland in 1949. Although normally a solo performer, Willie "The Lion" Smith performs here in a trio setting. The repertoire includes original compositions, Fats Waller and Clarence Williams tunes, Gershwin, blues and traditional jazz classics, spirituals, and even Chopin?s "Polonaise". Smith employs a unique blend of ragtime, impressionism and counterpoint, while combining subtle, melodic lines with intense swing. Here is "live" proof that Willie "The Lion" Smith was one of the most original, humorous and unpredictable jazz pianists of the 20th Century, as well as possibly the best "stride" pianist ever. Smith and the trio are in an instant groove from the very first tune of this 105 minute-long concert, and they never stop swinging. This CD was recorded in 2002 and combines hard-hitting Chicago blues with a more subtle, jazzy west-coast style blues. On this CD, homage is paid to leading bluesmen like T-Bone Walker, Buddy Guy, B.B. King, Muddy Waters and Howlin? Wolf, plus jazz guitar giants Kenny Burrell and Grant Green ? all of whom have influenced Barry Levenson. All the tunes are Levenson originals, and the style varies from tunes like ?Hard Times Won? with a Howlin? Wolf groove and Bob Dylan-like lyrics, to tender love songs like ?She?s So Fine?, ?Inhumanity Blues? which reflects upon the Sept. 11th attack on the U.S., and the jazz/R&B-inspired number ?Slip Me Some Green, Jack?, a tribute to jazz guitarist Grant Green and organist Jack McDuff. Besides playing guitar throughout and writing all the material, Levenson produced this CD as well.Barry Levenson is in the vanguard of 21st Century bluesmen, fully in possession of the four ?T?s?: tone, technique, taste and toughness ? plus an overwhelming respect for the blues. Harmonica-player and singer Johnny Dyer is a hard-edged Chicago-style bluesman who grew up in Mississippi.
