The last two tracks are previously unissued! Blues fans may already feel they know Andrew Big Voice Odom from the records he cut with Black & Blue and Delmark, or through his European tour with The Chicago Blues Festival in 1974. However, to really get to know him, you'd have had to have heard him at the various ghetto clubs in Chicago, the Checkerboard, Pepper's, the South Louise Lounge or, as is the case here, at Ma Bea's, where he spent most of his evenings.

Rags And Marches is a collaboration between two of the top European traditional jazz bands from the 1950s: Papa Bue’s Viking Jazzband from Denmark and Graham Stewart And His New Orleans Band from England. Moreover, the CD is a very unusual compilation, since all the tunes are either rags (ragtime) or marches – two musical genres, essential to traditional jazz, which not only pre-date the advent of jazz music, but also have their roots in the 19th century European musical tradition. The twenty tunes here were all recorded in Copenhagen between 1958 and 1962 – 14 numbers with Papa Bue , two with Graham Stewart’s band and four where the two bands join forces. This CD is a goldmine for traditional jazz lovers to go back to where it all began!

This double CD contains a series of different radio NBC broadcasts from the famous Blue Note club in Chicago, Illinois from the summer of 1953. The CD set also incudes a bonus recording from April 1944, a MBS broadcast from the Hurricane Restaurant in New York City. The broadcasts are featured complete with radio speaks and encouragements to buy bonds read by The Duke himself, plus bonus material and liner notes.

On May 1, 2010, Jazzhus Montmartre reopened in its original premises at Store Regnegade 19A, where so many jazz icons and trendsetting musicians performed from 1959 until the club closed in 1976. With the revival of the original close atmosphere and great acoustics, Montmartre has successfully resurrected its reputation as one of Europe?s best jazz clubs, and one where musicians love to play. Nikolaj Bentzon belongs to one of the strongest generations in Danish jazz, having helped lead it in new directions throughout the 1990s. Ever since his first trio with Thomas Ovesen and Jonas Johansen, Nikolaj Bentzon has covered a lot of musical territory but always left a deep impression. CD 1 contains a radio broadcast from Darthmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire, May 4, 1946, plus bonus tracks from The Hurricane Club in New York, September 3, 1943. CD 2 features two radio programs from Radio City in New York, May 18 and May 25, 1946. The last tracks are again from The Hurricane Club but from September 1, 1943. “ Volume 19 offers the listener a Duke Ellington Orchestra that was zealously maintaining its confidence and energy...The remarkable output is swinging, bluesy, danceable and emotive .” writes William McFadden, who is also the author of the extensive liner notes.

Frank Rosolino managed to squeeze in trips abroad for specific tours. In the Summer of 1978 he did what was to be his last solo tour in Europe. He came to Copenhagen late in August to play at Slukefter in the Tivoli Gardens which is where the present CD was recorded. He was backed by Thomas Clausen Trio and with no restrictions on length of performances the quartet was allowed to expand the chosen pieces. Blue Daniel was Frank?s best known composition. It has the unusual chorus length of 14 bars. Waltz For Diane is played in waltz time. There is plenty of fast slide work here. How About You? Is nicely relaxed and serves as a prelude to a marathon blues performance using Thelonious Monk?s Straight No Chaser as the theme. There Is No Greater Love uses short, punching phrases during the solo to add impetus.

A European tour with Miriam Makeba in 1970 had brought Parlan to Copenhagen, where four off-days gave him time to look around the city. He liked what he saw and two years later he settled down in Copenhagen. Horace Parlan enjoys playing solo Piano ? but hasn?t had the chance to do it all that often. Parlan?s aim in making this CD was to give highly personal interpretations of compositions which he has cherished over the years but which have not been over-recorded. He says: "I am not a Tatum ? I have to make the material fit my particular style and I spent quite a bit of time working on the arrangement. I wanted to do a reflective CD ? no racehorse tempos, no pyrotechnics ? and also make the harmonic structures as interesting as possible."

Life?s Carousel is a new album featuring the talents of critically acclaimed saxophonist Christina Dahl . Known for her unique sound and melodic playing, Dahl creates an intense musical experience with a repertoire of original compositions. The quartet consists of Jesper Lundgaard, who plays with great virtuosity and is an internationally acclaimed bass player; Espen Laub von Lilienskjold, a young talented drummer who is able to follow the music unconditionally with great musical energy; and Niclas Knudsen, a great Guitar player with a big personality who is able to express himself freely and lyrically. Together the quartet recorded eight tunes all composed by Christina Dahl . Because of a fire in the studio the musicians had to relocate to a house in the countryside for the recording session. This created an intimate atmosphere where the musicians where able to communicate directly with each other. All the musicians have the roles as soloists creating a space for personal originality and free communication. The quartet plays with freedom and dynamics, which comes to life in a spacious and playful ensemble. In all the compositions lie tales that have a symbolic relation to life and its richness in all its forms and colors. ?Through my compositions I try to reflect on life,? says Dahl and continues: ?Creating musical snapshots of life?s extremes, contrasts and vulnerability. Composing music to me is telling tales - moments of music and pictures. This comes to me as a unified whole. It just is. That is why I always begin the compositions by telling the story when I?m performing.? Christina Dahl is one of the most respected Danish tenor saxophonists. She has played with Bob Brookmeyer, Marilyn Mazur, Carsten Dahl, Lars Danielsson, Alex Riel among others and studied jazz and composition at the Conservatory of Rhythmic Music in Denmark. In 2010 she released ?Now Is Now? on Storyville Records.

The main acts are the Benny Carter and Charlie Barnet Orchestras, the Nat "King" Cole trio, vocalist Betty Roché and comedian/entertainer Jimmy Durante. Like all AFRS shows, these two programs present the top "entertainment" - jazz, popular music and comedy - acts of the early-mid 1940's.The two shows present top swing acts, where it is possible to detect the beginnings of bebop inspiration, especially in Charlie Barnet's Orch.

It's always exciting when I meet with Lennart and Frands, whether it's on a job or in the studio. To be honest, I have no idea what we are going to play when we meet. Everything we play is based on intuition and musical trust but we know which feeling" and sound we are after. The title number "Message from Bud" appeared in a dream where I sat and drank whisky with Bud Powell. Behind us a band was playing the tune and I woke up and remembered it. In many ways this recording is a dedication to all the pianists who have meant so much to me. Names such as Bud Powell, Erroll Garner, Wynton Kelly, Sonny Clark, Monk, Ahmad Jamal and Bill Evans are unquestionable. I hope you will enjoy the music!" Carsten Dahl
