Frank Bridge: Suite For Strings (Arranged For Piano Duet)

Bridge wrote his Suite for Strings in 1909-10 and it was published by Goodwin and Tabb in 1920. Composer and publisher had high hopes that the suite would be a popular success, and a Piano-duet version was apparently prepared. The manuscript of this has not survived, nor have any printed copies been traced. The Frank Bridge Trust therefore commissioned Hwee San Tan to make an arrangement, which recieved its first public performance at the City University, London, on October 29th 1991, played by the arranger and Charlene Wells.

Herbert Howells: Garland For De La Mare (Medium)

The songs of A Garland for de la Mare are vintage Howells, in their refinement, harmonic subtleties and dreamlike quality. And although the cover says that there are ten songs in this set, the songbook comprises thirteen songs, including two versions of Before Dawn.Herbert Howells is a giant of 20th century Anglican church music, the remainder of whose oeuvre is in the process of gaining new appreciation. He was a sensitive composer for Voice and among the very best of his songs are these settings of verses by Walter de la Mare, a personal friend. Howells had frequently discussed the publication of A Garden for de la Mare with Christopher Palmer (author of the major study of the composer’s life), but Palmer died prior to publication and Michael Pilkington saw the project through to completion.

A magnificent suite, written in 1987 by Eric Wetherell, for String Orchestra. The first movement is based on the sea shanty Santiano, hinting at the danger as well as the romance of life at sea. The second is a gentle waltz; perhaps the eighteenth century sailor, putting into port, found an opportunity to show his gentler side. The Polish folk-song River Wisla is the theme of the third movement, and the finale is a fast 6/8 firmly rooted in the English musical tradition.
