He was successful as asinging teacher and opera composer, though he was eclipsed in the latter field by his rival, Bellini. Nicola Porpora (1686-1768) was a Neopolitan composer and singing teacher. A rival of Handel, he formed an opera company which performed his own compositions all over Europe. He was widely acclaimed during his lifetime both as a composer and also as a pedagogue, counting Haydn among his students. Regrettably, most of his compositions have largely fallen into obscurity since his death. Credidi Propter is a setting of Psalm 116, originally for SSAA Upper Voice Choir, Strings and Organ Continuo, with optional Viola part. It has been edited by D. E. Hyde, and arranged with Piano accompaniment.

Beethoven: Irish Song for Cello with Piano accompaniment

It is a surprising fact of Beethoven’s life that of all the categories of pieces he composed, there are more settings of Irish songs than of any other type of music. Scottish poet Robert Burns convinced a Scottish music publisher to commission Beethoven to set his own words to Irish airs. The death of Burns in 1796 ended the project, but Beethoven went on to harmonise and arrange the songs in 1814 through 1816, mainly, and they were published, though never achieved as great a popularity as a rival set by Thomas Moore.This simplified version for easy Cello and Piano was arranged by composer Hugo Cole, an accomplished cellist who was for many years a music critic for the Guardian newspaper.

'Norma' was Vincenzo Bellini's eighth opera and the one that secured his fame and fortune as a composer. The conflict in the opera is between the native Druids of Britain and the Roman soldiers who are occupying the country. In the libretto by Felice Romani, a secret love unites Druidic Norma with Sever, a Roman by whom she has borne two children. Sever had loved Adalgisa, a Roman priestess before he knew Norma, but has not seen her for some time. When he meets her one day, his love for her returns and they resolve to fly together. Norma curses Sever for his treachery, and is about to kill her children but finally confides them to the care of her rival. She denounces Sever and he is seized by the Druids. The funeral pyre is lighted, and ascending it, Norma dies with her lover.This is the Schirmer Edition of the Libretto, with the text in the original Italian with an English translation by William Weaver.
