Lauren Bernofsky: Cloud Nine

This spirited work, in 3/4, maintains a quick tempo throughout. The opening, rhythmic motif builds steadily before the full band states the main theme. A lightly scored middle section leads into a restatement of the beginning material. A wonderful piece to challenge your group, as Lauren makes use of some independent lines while staying well within the grade level.

To my Country

To My Country comes from the trio section of the Dutch composer Bernard Zweer (1854-1924) third symphony. The third symphony was composed at a time when many composers were inspired by great patriotic feelings, and Zweers compositions were said to have been an influence on Dvorak, Smetana, Sibelius and Grieg. The arrangement of this chorale was written for the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the Netherlands on May 5th 1995 and is dedicated ‘To My Country’.

In one form or another, Hurricane Katrina affected all our lives. In the fall of 2005, the Mississippi Bandmasters Association commissioned Richard Saucedo to write this work for wind band. In the words of the composer, this is“a tribute to those who lost their lives, to those who saved lives, and to those who continue to persevere in the aftermath...” A wealth of musical effects-from the timpani “heartbeat” to the fury of thestorm to the sense of determined optimism-all contribute to make this an unforgettable concert experience. To my Country

The Hymn To My Country is the trio part of the second movement, entitled 'In the Country', from the third Symphony To My Country (1886 - 1890) by the Dutch composer Bernard Zweers (1854 - 1924). This symphony was written at a time when a lot of composers were largely inspired by patriotic feelings. The compositions of Zweers have apparently been influenced by his contemporaries such as Antonin Dvoràk, Jean Sibelius (Finlandia), Bedrich Smetana (who also wrote a work entitled 'My Country' (Ma Vlast) - a cycle of symphonic poems including the famous Moldau) and Edvard Grieg. Although his father, a music dealer and amateur musician, at first described his son's musical activities as'a waste of paper and time', Zweers did not abandon his vocation. When the 27-year-old Bernard Zweers conducted his first symphony in 1881, his father was so impressed that he allowed his son to devote himself completely to music. Thre arrangement of this chorale was written on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the Netherlands on May 5th, 1995, and is dedicated 'To My Country'.

To a Friend

When you have been playing in a band for a long time, you will know that music belongs to the most beautiful moments in life, but also to the roughest times. Making music together can give you strength when things are difficult.To a Friend is a wonderfully comforting work for anyone going through a dark time. Jacob de Haan composed the work for his father in law, Gerard Bosch, a musician to the core. The piece received its first performance justweeks before his passing. On a sun-kissed evening, his friends, the musicians of his two music societies Oefening Baart Kunst (Practice Makes Perfect) Otterlo, and the Reünie Orkest Artillerie Trompetterkorps (Reunion BandArtillery Trumpet Corps) played the work for Gerard - an unknowing yet beautiful goodbye.

Twelve To Remember, Twelve...

Twelve To Remember, Twelve To Come for Trombone and Ensemble was composed by Peter Bruun in 2001. Commisioned by Jesper Juul Sørensen Written for Jesper Juul Sørensen and Athelas Sinfonietta Copenhagen, provided with funds from the Danish State Art Foundation. Programme note: The trombone concerto has been given the slightly cryptic title Twelve to remember twelve to come. The title refers to twelve irregular beats that are struck at the start of the piece by the percussionist on three clanging bottles. The figure 12 later becomes the most important building-block in the rhythm of the piece, and the twelve beats from the beginning return right at the end. The concerto was written for the trombone virtuoso Jesper Juul Sørensen, originally for trombone and large chamber ensemble. It was given its first performance in 2001 by Jesper Juul Sørensen and Athelas Sinfonietta Copenhagen. Later the piece was reworked for trombone and orchestra - a version given its first performance by Jesper Juul Sørensen and the Aarhus Symphony Orchestra in 2003. Peter Bruun.

As a great fan of the Swedish pop rock duo Roxette, the top German arranger Wolfgang Wössner created a catchy pop medley for wind band as an ode to its lead vocalist Marie Fredriksson who passed away in December 2019. Hits like‘Joyride’, ‘Listen To Your Heart’, ‘It Must Have Been Love’ and ‘The Look’ can practically guarantee a good deal of enjoyment and demonstrate that this band is more than deserving of both its international recognition and itsplace in the Swedish Music Hall of Fame. A Tribute to Harry James

Prior to the second world war Harry James was a ‘name’. In 1939 this trumpet player/composer founded his own orchestra with which he undertook a series of successful tours. Naohiro Iwai wrote this solo for trumpet with wind band accompaniment as an ode to Harry James, making use of the golden oldies Sleepy Lagoon and Ciribiribin.

This piece was composed for the youth wind band at the Marienschule in Saarbrücken, Germany. The title praises the importance of an education emphasizing freedom, responsibility and getting to know and accepting one’s limitations in order to become a well-educated and good-hearted citizen. During the piece, the composer refers to aspects of a typical school-age experience, such as friendship, disappointments, challenges, values and goals. The point is that education gives us all ‘Wings to fly’. Bach To The Future, Kopi

Per Nørgård BACH TO THE FUTUREFor many years I have been specially fascinated by three of the preludes of Bach?s Well-tempered Piano, and I wish with this concerto-version for percussion-duo and orchestra to "highlight" some of the structural aspects of these pieces: It is my belief that there is a tradition in the music history, that makes it possible to let certain germs in an earlier period unfold into new, but not heterogenious, dimensions of a perhaps several hundred years later phase of the tradition.This concerto is a result of several years collaboration with Uffe Savery and Morten Friis ("Safri-Duo"), as well in original compositions - (Resonances, Repercussion, Resumé in EchoZone I-III) as in arrangements of the 3 Bach preludes, preparing for the enormous stylistic challenges of this work.A few introductory comments to each movement:I Movement: The archetypal sequence of broken chords within C-major has established itself as almost a cultural code, allowing the composer of 1996 to tell his tale-in-tones only by stressing and colouring the tones in the original piece without changing the pitches or (relative) durations as a ?palimpsest? containing as well the old as the new musical tale simultaneously. Later in the movement, this singleline is multiplied by the, till then discrete, but permanently pervading, proportion - throughout the piece - very close to the ?Golden Section?(= 3:5:8.t.i:8 before repetition, 5 before starting anew from the deepest tone, 3 as the rest etc. unchanged). The 3 tonal levels as well as the 3 relative speeds are treated according to these proportions for certain passages, but even in those the main focal point is directed at the freely invented melody (by me) incarnating itself solely by the unpermutad sequels of the original prelude.II Movement: One feature of the F sharp-prelude pervades all the six minutes-long second movement: A 4 times identical rhythmic pattern = 6:4:3:2:3:4:6 - as an hourglass-shaped timeshape - inspired me by the closeness of this pattern to a shape within the infinity-drumming of my invention, called Wide-Fan and Narrow-Fan , referring to pattern consisting of 8:4:2:1:2:4:8, the familiarity with the above - quoted one being obvious. New and old elaborations of this pattern-pair permeates the movement, especially since the Safri-Duo by their performance of my Repercussion had augmented my appetite for including this idiom in a wider context:III Movement: Without the existence of the d-minor-prelude I doubt that I would have dared to write a work like this, since it is the inexhaustible, rare quality and pecularity of this piece, which has stimulated my feeling of wonder and ?modernity? (or: eternity!) of this piece, of which I know of no equal in its special respect: the perpetual ambiguity of melodic foothold in the rhythmic ostinato of a broken descending triad, continuously lending one of its 3 possible positions in time to simple, melodic gestalt vaguely capturing, more or less (ir)resistible, the listener?s attention.By this threefold Hommage a J.S.B. I wish to close up in the rank of composers who already presented offerings to their great predecessor, himself being the unsurpassable offerer.Per Nørgård 4/2 97
