Philip Glass: Low Symphony

The ?Low? Symphony, composed in the spring of 1992, is based on the record ?Low? by David Bowie and Brian Eno first released in 1977. The record consisted of a number of songs and instrumentals and used techniques which were similar to procedures used by composers working in new and experimental music. As such, this record was widely appreciated by musicians working both in the field of ?pop? music and in experimental music and was a landmark work of that period.Having taken themes from three of the instrumentals on the record and, combining them with material of his own, Glass has used them as the basis of three movements of this Symphony.This is the Full Score of Glass? orchestral work.

Gradually other sections and registers enter and despite retaining a majestic character the rhythmic element becomes more active. This work makes truly creative use of sound, without great virtuosity or complexity, but maintains a good balance between static and dynamic elements.

Seis Manuel : from Islas y Montanas

Seis Manuel is the 3rd movement of the 4-movement suite Islas y Montañas and represents the traditional song and dance form of the Jibaro people, peasant farmers from the mountains of Puerto Rica. Solos are given to low brass and clarinets, important instruments in Puerto Rican military bands.

Vidda : Solo for Trumpet and Brass Band

I composed the song "Vidda" after I got my ultimate boy's dream fulfilled; To fly one of the Air Force's F-16 fighter jets! We flew out from Norwegian city Bodø on to the Finnmark plateau, where we flew so-called "low level" (at low altitude). It was such a great experience for me that I immediately wrote the song "Vidda" based on my experience of the trip. Here, I try to describe the meeting between the technical perfection of a machine that surpasses most of the various forces in it’s escape through the magnificent scenery passing at great speed, and the pilot who is alone with both the adventure and responsibility. The drums which start the song is meant to describes theenergy in the power of the plane, while the lonely and kind of melancholy melody from the trumpet in the beginning describes the feelings of the pilot. As the song develop, we pass both the mountains and big beautiful plateaus with g-forces quivering body. Hopefully you will share some of my experiences through this song. Have a nice flight! The Haunter of the Dark is based on a tale by the author Howard Phillips Lovecraft (1890-1937) about a deserted church, where according to an old legend a monster had been lying low for years.A scientist who studies ancient religions visits this church. Besides some ancient writings he discovers a box, which contains a luminous stone. Every time the stone sheds its light, the scientist experiences all sorts of weird visions.The church in the tale actually exists, and can be found in Providence (USA). Franco Cesarini has visited it and sketches the mysterious and occult atmosphere in "The Haunter of the Dark".

Over One Hundred Years

An incredible addition to the upper level band repertoire! A pointillist mixed-meter opener grabs your attention followed by urgent ensemble rhythmic motifs, percussive excitement, surprising horn tremolos, and thrilling brass and woodwind interplay. An extended dreamlike second movement features rich unison chalumeau clarinets and brass chorales that fade in and out, much like sunlight on a crystal prism or reflection pool. The final movement is filled with rapid low brass passage work, contrasted by exotic clarinet, flute and oboe solos over full ensemble staccato punches. A whirling syncopated foray ends the work with flair. The work commemorates the 125th anniversaryof St. Olaf College.

This piece is dedicated to all the citizens who live, have lived, and will live in the US town of Algona, who commissioned the work to celebrate it’s 150th anniversary. With dark-tinted tones (low drums, heavy brass), this overture begins with a primitive sacred feel, it seems as if centuries-old Indian singing is heard once more. Gradually the sound becomes clearer and brighter as the same theme travels throughout the band in various guises and variants. Imposing tutti passages then give the band the chance to lavishly shine. This bright and catchy overture radiates spontaneous energy and as it features every section of the band all the players as well as the listenersare continually surprised and captivated.

Castellum

This work consists of two movements. The first part is rather quiet and pastoral in character, written in a gently rocking 12/8 time and expressing the tranquillity of the area around the medieval town of Oudenburg in Belgium. After a beautiful orchestral climax the second section, inspired by the Roman past of Oudenburg, begins. A somewhat oppressive and impending introduction leads to the musical reflection of an army parade: Oudenburg was a so-called “castellum,” and the remains of the fortress are still visible in the current town plan. A more dynamic passage follows featuring the low brass. After that, the solemn rhythm of the parade is recaptured, culminating in atriumphant ending.
