Momentum

The Latin word Momentum has come to mean many different things in our language: a short period of time, a force, or a speed of movement. In our current times of around-the-clock high speed and energy, the composer wanted to write a refl ective and meditative piece that focuses on the moment at hand. An ideal point of rest for your concert programme!

Jim Mahaffey: Rollercoaster

This traditional gallop reflects the excitement and thrill of a high-speed rollercoaster ride. The overall ABA ternary form includes a contrasting middle section at the same speed. Using only traditional band keys, this work is an excellent tool for working on key changes, dynamics, and articulations, while developing technical facility for bands of medium ability. A full battery of percussion ensures a thorough workout and is sure to keep each member of your ensemble engaged. (3:10)

Apocalyps II

Apocalyps II is an abstract piece of music with a conventional structure (ABA-coda). The work is very energetic, the only rest being a quite short chorale-like middle section which is quickly followed by the finale again rushing ahead at full speed. The composer expresses anger and fire alternating with joy and energy by means of the enormous colourful movements.

Seatbelts Fastened!

Right from the outset until the very end, the speed, energy and “drive” of the tuneful music is palpable. It’s abundantly clear why the title “Seatbelts Fastened!” was chosen: just like an airplane, this music takes off and neither tempo nor intensity are lost throughout the flight. Descending and ascending scales characterise the most important thematic material and the music explores a variety of different registers through Van der Roost utilising a great deal of different tonalities and metres. Colorado : Overture on a Traditional Arapaho Folk Song

The main theme of this overture is based on an old Indian song from the Arapaho tribe. The name Colorado comes from the Spanish word meaning ‘coloured’. This term was originally used to refer to the river, as its waters turned red when running at full speed through the canyons, eroding the red stone. The State of Colorado is famed for no fewer than four National Parks, each providing breath-taking views. Railroad Ramble

This composition was commissioned by the Concert Band of the NS (the Dutch railroad company) and is intended as an opening piece, bringing the band and the audience on track for an exciting concert! The ascending chords over theostinato bass of the introduction represent the energetic pulling away of the train. The main theme in 10/8 time makes one drift away in the rhythm of full speed. The clownish middle section reflects the seemingly disorderlyactivity in a station hall during rush hour. This is followed by a reprise of the main theme and the introduction, which brings this fascinating musical rail journey to an end.

Fields of Deliberation

Fields of Deliberation was written by composer Kevin Houben for the ‘Limburgs Fanfare Orkest’. The occasion was the concert cycle that appropriately commemorated the end of the Second World War (in 2020, 75 years ago). Fromthe very first beginning till the end, speed, energy and ‘drive’ characterize this powerful composition. A magnificent lyrical melody is the common thread throughout the piece, without the rapid movement losing pace or intensity.Majestic, grand moments and energetic passages alternate culminating in an impressive highlight. This dynamic concert piece with a cinematic character is a challenge for all the different groups of instruments of theorchestra and is an added value for any concert program.

Milestone Overture

This work was written at the pivotal point of both two centuries and two millennia. With its hopeful melodies and triumphant parts in the brass section, the opening pictures the dawning of a new era of great expectations, characterized by the high speed of communicating all over the world, which is one of the most important aspects of life in the 21st century. This is achieved by musical themes being rapidly transferred from one musician to another. In this vortex of information and fast business transactions, the sense of individuality threatens to become extinct. At this point, Brosse silences the orchestra (a symbol of society) and draws attention to those peoplewho are less fortunate than most of us. This focus on other people culminates with an orchestral climax in which all powers come together with a feeling of euphoria.

Vidda : Solo for Trumpet and Brass Band

I composed the song "Vidda" after I got my ultimate boy's dream fulfilled; To fly one of the Air Force's F-16 fighter jets! We flew out from Norwegian city Bodø on to the Finnmark plateau, where we flew so-called "low level" (at low altitude). It was such a great experience for me that I immediately wrote the song "Vidda" based on my experience of the trip. Here, I try to describe the meeting between the technical perfection of a machine that surpasses most of the various forces in it’s escape through the magnificent scenery passing at great speed, and the pilot who is alone with both the adventure and responsibility. The drums which start the song is meant to describes theenergy in the power of the plane, while the lonely and kind of melancholy melody from the trumpet in the beginning describes the feelings of the pilot. As the song develop, we pass both the mountains and big beautiful plateaus with g-forces quivering body. Hopefully you will share some of my experiences through this song. Have a nice flight! Ray of Light

Ray of light was composed for the 75th anniversary of the Royal Wind Band (De Heidegalm Berkenbos). The mining environment of Berkenbos (Heusden-Zolder, B) is a proof of what used to be one of the most flourishing industries inLimburg viz. the Mining Industry._x000D__x000D_Going down the shaft in the elevator for the first time was a sensational experience for every miner: the noise of the closing doors, the shock experienced when the lift cage started moving tofall down whizzingly into the deep at a speed of 30 km an hour. The opening theme of Ray of Light doesn’t only reflect the bravery of the descending miners but also their anxiety, their doubt and insecurity. In the solo passage,the anxiety during the long walk in the dark through the mine corridors with only headlamps and mine lamps is clearly audible._x000D__x000D_Working in the mines wasn’t without any danger. The very flammable and at times explosive mine gasesalways posed a hidden threat. Apart from that there was always the continuous danger of collapse. The beautiful choral movements are therefore an ode to the miners that left their lives in the mine._x000D__x000D_The eastern scale refers tothe multicultural character of the mining environment of Berkenbos with its many commercial shops and different types of housing inherent in mining architecture._x000D_The mining profession is still a very dangerous job, but at the endof the dark corridor the miners still see a beam of light as a sign of hope._x000D_

Asbjørn Schaathun: Actions Interpolations And Analyses (Score)

ACTIONS, INTERPOLATIONS AND ANALYSES, symphonies for bass-clarinet and large ensemble (1987-90), is what is commonly termed a work in progress. So far Schaathun has completed three of five parts. The is the composer's first large-scale attempt to investigate possible connections between ostensibly unrelated material. Explained in simple terms, it involves taking two of Schaathun's "own" type of texture (composed by means of different techniques) and letting them "rotate" around a familiar musical object (in this case a short excerpt from Stravinskij's Symphonies of Wind instruments in which he employs the famous "frozen" chords). In the course of the piece the elements takes over various characteristics from one another and the form progresses from fairly clear-cut textures to a situation where the various textures are superimposed, creating a dramatic flow. On a more advanced level, the piece is about trying to mediate between different musical textures as metaphors for the different levels of the sound itself. One of the main questions in this context is; What is size in music? Is it possible to take a small chord(i.e. narrow register, few instruments, simple tone colours) and then blow it up (wide register, many instruments, advanced mixtures) in such a way that the listener still perceives it as the same chord? You have simply moved closer to the sound. At any rate, when Schaathun composed the piece, he himself travellig into the sound, as if were viewing a texture from a distance. He then recomposed the same situation and drew closer, and then recompose it a third time and simply get close enough to discover the world of sounds that thus emerged. A world of sounds capable of travelling at a tremendous speed... However, like all concertos, the piece is of course about the individual and his relationship to his surroundings (society). Schaathun has often pondered on the reason for this preoccupation wih solo concertos. The answer derives from his firm conviction that nothing would ever happen if it weren't for the initiative, the Action, of the individual.
